The sports chain’s profits were dented in 2016-17 as it struggled to navigate sterling’s devaluation, but the retailer is expected to show signs of recovery when it unveils full year results on Thursday. Sports Direct is forecast to post underlying profit after tax of £103.18 million, climbing 55.1% from £66.5 million the year before, according to consensus estimates. Revenues are expected to come in at £3.37 billion for the year, up 3.9% from £3.24 billion. The Newcastle United owner has won the rights to make shirts with the official Three Lions logo, emblazoned with the words “2018 Winners” underneath it. Mr Ashley was in Italy to witness Gareth Southgate’s anguish as he missed a penalty against Germany in 1996, and wants to give England fans an extra boost if their team bring the World Cup home. The shirts will be available through Sports Direct’s app, and the company has warned Apple and Google that there could be a huge surge on their servers if England do win. The explosive allegations were made as part of a formal complaint to Parliament about Mr Wright’s conduct when he led an inquiry into Sports Direct’s working practices. Mr Ashley, who owns an 11% stake in House of Fraser through Sports Direct, filed a court injunction earlier this year to demand a copy of the document, claiming he had been “frozen out”. House of Fraser’s management has now sent the document to Mr Ashley, the Press Association understands, handing him crucial information that could aide a dramatic swoop on the business.
