ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Africa recorded a ten-year growth in its healthy life expectancy from 2000 to 2019, the World Health Organization Africa office said Thursday, exceeding the global average and progress seen in any other region over the same period. The healthy life expectancy in the region “rose by almost ten years to stand at 56 years in 2019 compared with 46 years in the year 2000,” Dr. Lindiwe Makubalo, assistant regional Director for WHO Africa, said at an online briefing, citing the new WHO’s State of Health in Africa report. The gain exceeds that of the average global healthy life expectancy that increased by five years over the same period, Dr. Makubalo said, attributing it to better essential health services, improvement in health service coverage, in productive and maternal health and in health services to tackle infectious diseases. Despite the progress made, "we certainly have a lot to do and we seem to be ready to move together,” the WHO Africa official said, … [Read more...] about WHO Africa sees 10-year growth in healthy life expectancy

“I transformed my life after years of crippling anxiety”
I was raised in a small town in Pennsylvania, called Dover. My mom gave birth to me when she was 19 years old, and raised me on her own. This meant that managing the pressures of working, alongside having a child was difficult for her. Due to my mom's long work hours, I spent some time with my grandparents, and a lot of time alone, as I was growing up. Because I felt that I had to do a lot to raise myself, I began developing perfectionist tendencies. I'd come home, have a snack, do my homework, and call my mom, asking her if I could go outside to play—at the time, my routine became rigid as it allowed me to gain a sense of control. My mom worked long hours and I did not want to add any more stress to her day-to-day life, as she would arrive home exhausted. My grandparents also had their own children, so I didn't want to be a burden—something else that somebody had to worry about. So I learned from an early age to be silent. This soon developed into people pleasing, as I felt that … [Read more...] about “I transformed my life after years of crippling anxiety”

Inflation Expectations Fall But Most Americans Say They Are Worse Off Than A Year Ago
Despite a sharp decline in inflation expectations, U.S. households remain pessimistic about their financial situation, data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York showed Monday. The median expectations for one- and three-year-ahead inflation both declined significantly. The median one-year expectation for inflation fell to 6.2 percent, down from 6.8 percent in June. The three year median expectation dropped to 3.2 percent from 3.6 percent. The New York Fed said that the decreases were broad-based across income groups, but largest among respondents with annual household incomes under $50k and respondents with no more than a high school education. Median five-year ahead inflation expectations also declined to 2.3 percent from 2.8 percent in June. After being stable at 3.0 percent during the first three months of the year, the series has been trending down since. Pro-life groups blame Kansas amendment loss on ‘abortion industry’ campaign
Kansas voters last week became the first in the nation to weigh in on abortion access following the U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade. On August 2, Kansas voters resoundingly defeated a proposed amendment to the state constitution 59% to 41% that would have removed the right to an abortion and would have allowed state lawmakers to pass further restrictions in the future. The vote came as both a shock and a disappointment to pro-life leaders, who blamed misinformation spread by pro-abortion groups for the defeat of the referendum. "Sadly, thousands and thousands of babies will die in Kansas," president of the National Right to Life Committee Carol Tobias said in a statement released after the primary results. The referendum, referred to as the Value Them Both Amendment, was backed by several pro-life advocacy groups including the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), the nation's oldest pro-life organization. A representative from the NRLC told Newsweek … [Read more...] about Pro-life groups blame Kansas amendment loss on ‘abortion industry’ campaign
