Sharad Pawar faces a concerted offensive from the Right, online and offline

May 16, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

From labelling him an atheist who has no respect for Hindu gods to claiming he kick-started casteist politics in Maharashtra, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar is under attack from all corners. The attacks aren’t only from political parties — there have been death threats, comments on his illness and age, and some have even wished him hell. The veteran Maharashtra politician, who was instrumental in setting up the tripartite Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) ruling alliance, and from whom Prime Minister Narendra Modi once used to take advice, is facing a well-coordinated attack, both online and offline, from Right wing sympathisers. Last week, the Maharashtra BJP’s Twitter handle posted an edited video of Mr. Pawar’s public rally in Satara, where he recited a poem by Jawahar Rathod, in which the poet talks about atrocities committed on people from lower castes. The tweet said that “atheist Sharad Pawar always hated Hindu gods”. An army of social media trolls picked up the … [Read more...] about Sharad Pawar faces a concerted offensive from the Right, online and offline

Oregon sued over failure to provide public defenders

May 16, 2022 by www.sfchronicle.com

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Criminal defendants in Oregon who have gone without legal representation for long periods of time amid a critical shortage of public defense attorneys filed a lawsuit Monday that alleges the state violated their constitutional right to legal counsel and a speedy trial. The complaint, which seeks class-action status, was filed as state lawmakers and the Oregon Office of Public Defense Services struggle to address the huge shortage of public defenders statewide. The crisis has led to the dismissal of dozens of cases and left an estimated 500 defendants statewide — including several dozen in custody on serious felonies — without legal representation. Crime victims are also impacted because cases are taking longer to reach resolution, a delay that experts say extends their trauma, weakens evidence and erodes confidence in the justice system, especially among … [Read more...] about Oregon sued over failure to provide public defenders

North Korea brags about baby formula in apparent dig at U.S. shortage

May 16, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A bizarre new article from North Korean state media bragged about leader Kim Jong Un 's personal assistance in creating the nation's baby formula recipe, in what appeared to be a dig at U.S. formula shortages. A translation of a Voice of Korea article published Tuesday local time said that Kim oversaw the production of baby formula by taste-testing batches and offering advice on how the product could become better. The article was translated into English by KCNA Watch, a South Korea-based outlet that monitors and translates media from the North. The article stated that Kim placed a call to a senior official of the Pyongyang Municipal Committee around 4 a.m. on September 15, 2021, to discuss the production of formula. "Kim Jong Un said he had just tasted the diluted dry milk produced in Pyongyang City for trial and pointed out the shortcomings one by one," it said. "He told the senior official that it is necessary for the officials of the relevant sector to study such … [Read more...] about North Korea brags about baby formula in apparent dig at U.S. shortage

Mom switching baby formula escalates baby’s health issues

May 16, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Speaking about the strain put on them by the continuing baby formula shortage, one family said that switching to a new type of formula has caused their daughter health problems. Zaskiia Colon of El Cajon, California, spoke to CBS 8 about the problems she has faced trying to feed her 6-week-old daughter amid the formula shortage. She said that she, like many parents, has been driving around for hours, scouring the greater San Diego area for formula and often finding bare shelves. She also explained that she will not be able to switch her daughter, whose name she withheld for privacy reasons, to baby food until she is at least 4 months old. "I was just getting formula right now [prior to the interview]," Colon told CBS 8. "What am I supposed to do, I'm not producing enough milk." The situation got so severe for Colon that she attempted to give her daughter a different variety of baby formula than she was used to, swapping in Enfamil Gentlease Infant Formula Powder. This … [Read more...] about Mom switching baby formula escalates baby’s health issues

This is the Republican Senator determined to bury Madison Cawthorn

May 16, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

Thom Tillis is not someone who particularly riles up voters on either side of the aisle. When the North Carolina Senator spoke at a Republican rally in Fayetteville 2019, he was met with boos for being insufficiently conservative. Conversely, while his 2014 race against incumbent Democratic Senator Kay Hagan was the most expensive race in history at the time, his Democratic opponent Cal Cunningham raised far less than Amy McGrath or Jamie Harrison in their 2020 suicide missions against Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham. This, despite the fact that by all usual metrics Cunningham had a better chance of beating Tillis (whether Cunningham’s farcical sex scandal cost him the race is a question for debate). Nevertheless, Tillis squeaked out a victory both times, and is now set to become North Carolina’s senior Senator when Richard Burr retires at the end of this year. These days, it appears Tillis is mostly known for using his entire operation to end the career … [Read more...] about This is the Republican Senator determined to bury Madison Cawthorn

Couples shares DIY journey to convert old school bus into new home

May 16, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

One Michigan couple purchased a school bus with plans to renovate and convert it into a family camper, and in the process are taking millions of TikTok users along for the ride. Emma LaFave, 27, has published multiple videos under her TikTok handle @77seater detailing how she and her husband, Brek, 29, purchased the bus off a public auction website and have put in sweat equity to turn it into something worthwhile. The 2003 bus was bought off Public Surplus, which is a surplus supply auction website, for $4,400. It was purchased last August with Emma admitting "it was something I didn't really think through all the way." "I think we got a pretty decent deal, although bus prices can vary tremendously," she said in one of her videos. The process began with ripping out all the seats and flooring that were "completely covered in rust." Removing screws and a grinding of the rust was followed by treating the surface, painting and laying down sub-flooring. Then the couple, who … [Read more...] about Couples shares DIY journey to convert old school bus into new home

A Democratic congressional candidate told his GOP opponent to “f*** off” during a debate held in a synagogue

October 23, 2018 by www.newsweek.com

Democratic congressional candidate Scott Wallace of Pennsylvania cursed at his opponent Brian Fitzpatrick during a debate in a synagogue, telling the Republican representative to "f*** off." "Ironically, there was a later question about the need for civility in politics," Fitzpatrick told WBCB News. "Well, a good start is to not use vulgarities in the sanctuary of a synagogue in the middle of a congressional debate." The expletives came during a debate between the two candidates on Sunday night at the Congregation Tifereth Israel in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. The two candidates are running for the House in the state's first congressional district, a largely Jewish community. According to WBCB, Wallace's outburst "silenced" the audience. Fitzpatrick, who was first elected in 2016, said that he was "stunned" by Wallace's comment. The Democrat dropped the expletive when being questioned about his campaign's attack ad against Fitzpatrick's position on health care. The ad states that … [Read more...] about A Democratic congressional candidate told his GOP opponent to “f*** off” during a debate held in a synagogue

Aurora fires police Chief Vanessa Wilson; chief was subject of “smear campaign,” her attorney says

April 6, 2022 by www.denverpost.com

The Aurora city manager fired the city’s police chief Wednesday, saying he had general concerns about her leadership and that areas of the department needed “refocused attention.” The decision follows weeks of speculation as to the future of Chief Vanessa Wilson, who took over the leadership of the Aurora Police Department in 2020 as it careened through a series of high-profile controversies under its former chief. Wilson pledged to restore community trust in the department and implement reforms, even as the agency was thrust into the national spotlight following the death of Elijah McClain during a violent arrest by Aurora police. But she faced growing criticism and pressure as an increasing number of officers left the department and crime in the city spiked. “It is clear that Chief Wilson has prioritized community involvement,” City Manager Jim Twombly said in a news release announcing her firing. “However, the police chief also needs to effectively manage the … [Read more...] about Aurora fires police Chief Vanessa Wilson; chief was subject of “smear campaign,” her attorney says
