Amsterdam has launched a digital campaign telling British tourists who want a "messy night" to "stay away". The online initiative is aimed at men aged 18 to 35, warning they face a fine alongside a criminal record and "fewer prospects" if they "misbehave and cause nuisance" in the Dutch city . The warning videos will be triggered when people in Britain enter specific terms into search engines, including "cheap hotel Amsterdam", "stag party Amsterdam", and "pub crawl Amsterdam". Footage shows men being arrested in the street, having their fingerprints and mugshots taken, and being locked in a police cell. The clip warns: "So coming to Amsterdam for a messy night? Stay away." The city's council has launched the scheme as part of efforts to improve Amsterdam's reputation amid continuing complaints by residents over the noise, drunkenness and misbehaviour. Deputy Mayor Sofyan Mbarki said: "Visitors will remain welcome but not if they misbehave and cause nuisance. … [Read more...] about Amsterdam tells British men who want a ‘messy night’ to ‘stay away’ from the city

Virtual Meets Reality: Inside NBA 2K and Pro Basketball
Sports Video games NBA Gamers The cramped room in Midtown Manhattan was packed wall-to-wall with YouTubers—a relentlessly cheery bunch—the lot of them excitedly live-streaming, likes and comments bobbing across their screens. It was August, and the crowd was previewing the latest product from the NBA 2K video game series—NBA 2K18, which was released Friday to those who pre-ordered—and the event was crowded with elite gamers, social media stars, 2K staffers and, pocked about the room, honest-to-God, in-the-flesh NBA players. Security stood at the front door. Booze flowed from a bar in the back. TVs pinstriped the length of the room, cutting it into even rows. That was the main attraction, with the gamers lining up, jostling through the morass of people to get their turn on the joysticks (all of this, of course, beamed over the internet to 2K devotees). In a room full of presumed NBA fans it was somewhat disorienting to see these NBA players—Brooklyn Nets guard … [Read more...] about Virtual Meets Reality: Inside NBA 2K and Pro Basketball
Obamacare Keeps Winning
The government benefits began their existence as objects of partisan rancor and harsh criticism. Eventually, though, they became so popular that politicians of both parties promised to protect them. It was true of Social Security and Medicare. And now the pattern seems to be repeating itself with Obamacare. Consider what has happened recently in North Carolina: Only a decade after the state’s Republican politicians described the law as dangerous and refused to sign up for its expansion of Medicaid, Republicans and Democrats came together to pass such an expansion . The Republican-controlled House in North Carolina passed the bill 87 to 24, while the Republican-controlled Senate passed it 44 to 2. “Wow, have things changed,” Jonathan Cohn wrote in a HuffPost piece explaining how the turnabout happened . Obamacare — the country’s largest expansion of health insurance since Medicare and Medicaid in 1965 — is still not as widely accepted as those programs. North Carolina … [Read more...] about Obamacare Keeps Winning
Maybe Money Does Buy Happiness After All
In the aftermath of World War II, the Japanese economy went through one of the greatest booms the world has ever known. From 1950 to 1970, the economy’s output per person grew more than sevenfold. Japan, in just a few decades, remade itself from a war-torn country into one of the richest nations on earth. Yet, strangely, Japanese citizens didn’t seem to become any more satisfied with their lives. According to one poll, the percentage of people who gave the most positive possible answer about their life satisfaction actually fell from the late 1950s to the early ’70s. They were richer but apparently no happier. This contrast became the most famous example of a theory known as the Easterlin paradox. In 1974, Richard Easterlin, then an economist at the University of Pennsylvania, published a study in which he argued that economic growth didn’t necessarily lead to more satisfaction. People in poor countries, not surprisingly, did become happier once they could afford basic … [Read more...] about Maybe Money Does Buy Happiness After All
Judge Denies Bannon’s Shaky Legal Argument for Executive Privilege
A federal judge refused to throw Steve Bannon a lifeline on Wednesday, instead deciding that the right wing provocateur will indeed go to trial in the coming weeks for refusing to testify before the Jan. 6 Committee. However, the judge indicated he may eventually hold the Department of Justice accountable for spying on one of Bannon's defense lawyers and secretly obtaining his call and email records. While Bannon’s lawyers insisted that he was protected because of DOJ’s policy that former White House advisers don't have to testify before Congress if a president invokes "executive privilege," U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols on Wednesday was unconvinced that Bannon could point to in noting that "none of these letters unambiguously instructed” Bannon to simply not show up. “It’s more than a stretch… that they specifically addressed this situation,” Nichols said, noting that Bannon was actually a former White House official—and he was claiming privilege on behalf of Donald Trump … [Read more...] about Judge Denies Bannon’s Shaky Legal Argument for Executive Privilege
Nashville Shooting Fuels the Right’s Engine of Anti-Trans Hate
Get more news and opinions in the twice-daily Beast Digest newsletter. Don’t miss the next big story, sign up here . We should, as human beings, feel once again united by tragedy, as the epidemic of gun violence, especially another school shooting, brings us all together in exasperation. We typically would be focused on mourning the tragic loss of life at Covenant School in Nashville, Tenn ., on the murders of little children, on the killings of the three adults gunned down in cold blood Monday morning. We’ve learned from police that the shooter had plans to go on a rampage beyond that private Christian school, to a local mall and more. You might even expect this would be that hallowed time of GOP “thoughts and prayers,” and renewed calls for more laws regarding mental health. But, no: This time is different, because the person pulling the triggers was transgender, like me. We trans Americans find ourselves reeling from unprovoked and unjustifiable attacks, on … [Read more...] about Nashville Shooting Fuels the Right’s Engine of Anti-Trans Hate
Victoria Alonso Says Disney Fired Her Over Refusal to Censor Gay Flags
Identity Queen Victoria Alonso (she’s gay, Hispanic, and woke) is on a glorious crusade to humiliate Disney/Marvel after being fired last week. Alonso was with the company for 17 years, was the number two Marvel person after Kevin Feige, and was one of the most vocal voices within the Mouse House when it came to pushing identity politics and sexual fetishes in Marvel movies. Disney claims she was fired for producing the Amazon movie Argentina 1985 (a better movie than anything to come out of Marvel in years). Well, you can see why that’s a firing offense. Amazon is a direct Disney competitor. But Identity Queens see themselves above the rules, so Alonso not only produced the movie, she helped to promote it. Being female, gay, woke, and Hispanic likely gave her a false sense of security. I check four boxes. They don’t dare touch someone as precious as me! Well, now she’s lashing out at Marvel with the claim she was fired after standing up for gay rights against the evil … [Read more...] about Victoria Alonso Says Disney Fired Her Over Refusal to Censor Gay Flags
