McGuireWoods is merging with a 120-lawyer firm in North Carolina, a move that will increase the larger firm’s roster to almost 900 lawyers.Currently McGuireWoods has just one North Carolina office, in Charlotte. The merger gives it additional offices in Raleigh and Wilmington and increases the number of lawyers in Charlotte from 40 to 160, Legal Times reports.Peter Covington, chairman and managing member of Helms Mulliss, will be given the new position of vice chairman of McGuireWoods, the Charlotte Business Journal reports.“Charlotte’s emergence as the nation’s second largest financial center and the growing importance of technology and the life sciences in North Carolina are driving demand for the sophisticated tax, banking, business and regulatory services that our combined firm will be able to provide,” Covington said in a press release. Newly Merged Husch Blackwell Opening New Chicago and Denver Offices
A newly formed St. Louis-based law firm is on an expansion tear. As the dust is still settling from the merger that created Husch Blackwell Sanders, the firm has announced plans to open two new offices, in Chicago and Denver, before the end of the month.“David Fenley, who is a co-chairman of the combined firm along with Joseph Conran, said the Denver office will have from eight to 10 attorneys within two to three months,” reports the Denver Business Journal. The firm plans to service existing clients there, but did not specify the practice areas on which it expects the Denver office to focus. The British-based law firm Clifford Chance is venturing into Australia through a merger with two law firms there.Clifford Chance will gain 14 partners in Australia through mergers with Cochrane Lishman Carson Luscombe in Perth and Chang Pistilli & Simmons in Sydney, according to the Australian, Legal Week and the Lawyer.Peter Charlton, Asia regional managing partner for Clifford Chance, told the Australian that the law firm had been “flirting with Australia” for about a decade. The Massachusetts Division of Insurance (DOI) recently held a two-day hearing on rate changes proposed by Massachusetts health insurance plans to be effective for the second quarter of 2016 (Q2). Presentations by carriers, in the state that provided the prototype for the Affordable Care Act (ACA), raised issues that resonate in other states related to the drivers of premium increases in the small group and individual markets, which are merged into a single market in Massachusetts. On January 11, the first day of the hearing, twelve insurers reported an average increase of 9.1% year-over-year, with the carriers’ filings ranging from a change of negative 3.3% across plans to a high of 35.1%. On the second day, only three public presentations were made, by Health Care for All, a major health care consumer advocacy group; the Massachusetts Association of Health Plans (representing 17 plans doing business in Massachusetts); and a licensed health insurance broker.
