Rights group: Israel approves over 4,000 new settler homes
Israel advanced plans for the construction of more than 4,000 settler homes in the occupied West Bank on Thursday, a rights group said, a day after the military demolished homes in an area where hundreds of Palestinians face the threat of expulsion. It was a jolting illustration of Israel's policies in the territory it has occupied for nearly 55 years. Critics, including three major human rights groups, say those policies amount to apartheid, a charge Israel rejects as an attack on its very legitimacy. Hagit Ofran, an expert on the settlements at the anti-settlement watchdog group Peace Now, said a military planning body approved 4,427 housing units at a meeting on Thursday that she attended. Israeli officials did not respond to requests for comment. It's the biggest advancement of settlement projects since the Biden administration took office. The White House opposes settlement construction and views it as an obstacle to any eventual peace agreement with the … [Read more...] about Rights group: Israel approves over 4,000 new settler homes
Young children can easily see disturbing content on YouTube despite age restrictions
The YouTube video starts with a popular British children's cartoon character, Peppa Pig , introducing herself and her family, but there are signs of trouble almost immediately. During the ninth second, Peppa's mother opens her mouth and shouts, "Smoke weed!" The video - a doctored version of a real Peppa episode - deteriorates from there. Over five minutes, there are explosions and racial and homophobic slurs, culminating with Peppa and her parents in dark sunglasses smoking marijuana as rapper Snoop Dogg dances nearby. Since it was uploaded in 2015, the altered video, which has no age restrictions, has been viewed more than 1.5 million times. After years of vowing to police inappropriate content, YouTube continues to deliver violent imagery, drug references, sexually-suggestive sequences and foul, racially-charged language in clips that reach children at a troubling pace, say researchers, parents and consumer groups. YouTube's recommendation algorithm, they say, … [Read more...] about Young children can easily see disturbing content on YouTube despite age restrictions
Revenge porn victims could be granted anonymity in review of online abuse laws
Revenge porn victims could be granted anonymity as part of a review of the laws around online abuse. MPs and campaigners have been calling for victims to be protected from further harassment after the sharing of private or sexual images or videos of a person without their consent was made a criminal offence in 2015. Survivor Lena Chen previously told The Independent how she had to leave the US and change her name when she was harassed for years after her ex-boyfriend’s posted of intimate photos online. The Law Commission is to consider the case for granting revenge porn victims automatic anonymity, which is currently standard for sexual offences, as part of a wide-ranging review. The independent body will also look at whether current laws are sufficient to tackle the emerging offence of “cyberflashing ”, where victims are sent unsolicited sexual photos and “deepfake” pornography that sees victims’ faces added to explicit videos. Russian sneak attack on Sumy area fails, Putin forces lose Ukrainian ground
An attempt by Russian forces to conduct a sneak attack and cross into Ukraine's Sumy region on Monday failed, according to the head of the Sumy Regional State Administration. Dmytro Zhyvytskyi said Monday in a Telegram post that the attempt took place at about 7 a.m. local time. "The enemy opened fire on the border area of Shostka district with mortars, grenade launchers, machine guns and submachine guns," the translated post read. "Enemy sabotage and reconnaissance groups tried to enter the region under cover of fire. Border guards gave battle to the Russians, the same retreat beyond the state border." The reported failure to cross into Sumy is the latest indication of Russian losses and Ukrainian successes in the ongoing war, although they have not been addressed by Russian officials. Several reports issued last week by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a U.S. think tank that provides frequent updates on the war, said Russian President Vladimir Putin 's troops … [Read more...] about Russian sneak attack on Sumy area fails, Putin forces lose Ukrainian ground
A Democratic congressional candidate told his GOP opponent to “f*** off” during a debate held in a synagogue
Democratic congressional candidate Scott Wallace of Pennsylvania cursed at his opponent Brian Fitzpatrick during a debate in a synagogue, telling the Republican representative to "f*** off." "Ironically, there was a later question about the need for civility in politics," Fitzpatrick told WBCB News. "Well, a good start is to not use vulgarities in the sanctuary of a synagogue in the middle of a congressional debate." The expletives came during a debate between the two candidates on Sunday night at the Congregation Tifereth Israel in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. The two candidates are running for the House in the state's first congressional district, a largely Jewish community. According to WBCB, Wallace's outburst "silenced" the audience. Fitzpatrick, who was first elected in 2016, said that he was "stunned" by Wallace's comment. The Democrat dropped the expletive when being questioned about his campaign's attack ad against Fitzpatrick's position on health care. The ad states that … [Read more...] about A Democratic congressional candidate told his GOP opponent to “f*** off” during a debate held in a synagogue

The importance of Lumbini
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lumbini, Nepal, though only for a few hours, is full of symbolism and substance. No Indian Prime Minister has visited Lumbini in the last few decades. Mr. Modi’s visit is a combination of personal desire and political and strategic goals. For him, it is the fulfilment of a wish articulated in 2014 when he first became Prime Minister. Since he could not travel to Lumbini during his previous visits to Nepal, as Ambassador, I planted, on his behalf, a sapling of the sacred Bodhi tree in the gardens of the Maya Devi temple where Gautama Buddha was born. Amid the strife and turmoil and the anger and hatred that we see in society, the Prime Minister’s visit also provides a moment for quiet reflection and a reiteration of the message of peace, compassion and non-violence preached by the Buddha and spread by the roaring lions in the four directions, as depicted in the Lion Capital of Ashoka, our national emblem — a message that calls for shunning … [Read more...] about The importance of Lumbini
Debbarma returns as Minister in Manik Saha’s Cabinet
Narendra Chandra Debbarma, president of the Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT), the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) collation partner, caught everyone’s attention at his oath-taking as a Cabinet Minister here on Monday. The octogenarian leader, who recently fought off his baiters and retained his position in the party, held a magnifying glass in one hand to read the paper with the oath of allegiance in the other. Mr. Debbarma, who hasn’t been keeping well over the past year and has spent a few months in hospital, remains at the epicentre of tribal politics despite his frail health. In Chief Minister Manik Saha new Cabinet, he not only ensured his place, but also prevailed on the BJP leadership to drop his sworn opponent, Mevar Kumar Jamatia, who held the important Forest and Tribal Welfare portfolios in the previous Biplab Kumar Deb council. Mr. Deb resigned, making way for Dr. Saha’s chief ministership. Mr. Jamatia had pulled off a coup by replacing Mr. Debbarma as IPFT … [Read more...] about Debbarma returns as Minister in Manik Saha’s Cabinet
