I had known that Didion’s Parkinson’s was advancing; seven or eight months earlier, someone had told me that she was vanishing; someone else had told me that for the past two years, she hadn’t been able to speak. I didn’t want her to die. My sense of myself is in many ways wrapped up in the 40 essays in Slouching Towards Bethlehem and The White Album . I don’t know how many times I’ve read Democracy . “Call me the author,” she writes in that novel. “Let the reader be introduced to Joan Didion.” There are people who admire Joan Didion, and people who … [Read more...] about Joan Didion’s Magic Trick

Carlson: Democrats Have Decided Rather Than Convince You, They Will Change the Electorate
Tuesday on FNC’s “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” host Tucker Carlson defended prior statements regarding so-called great replacement theory pertaining to the U.S. electorate and how Democrats had openly claimed shifts in demographics would be to their political advantage. Carlson’s remarks come in the wake of the Buffalo, NY shooting in which the suspect allegedly used the theory for justification for actions. Many on the left had attacked the FNC host, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who Carlson called a coward for declining to appear on his FNC show. Transcript as follows: Last May, a 17-year-old high school senior called Payton Gendron received an assignment in his economics class. The assignment asked, “What do you want to do when you retire?” He answered, “Commit murder-suicide.” Gendron’s teacher immediately reported his threat to authorities who sent him to the emergency room for a psychiatric evaluation. Gendron was there for just 20 hours, as he … [Read more...] about Carlson: Democrats Have Decided Rather Than Convince You, They Will Change the Electorate
Only the Right Can Defeat White Nationalism
The massacre in El Paso, Texas, has, for the moment, reminded Americans of the danger posed by far-right terrorists. Former national-security officials have demanded that the U.S. government “make addressing this form of terrorism as high a priority as countering international terrorism has become since 9/11.” Retired Marine General John Allen and the former senior U.S. diplomat Brett McGurk have argued that far-right extremism poses “an equal threat” as jihadist groups such as ISIS. This is incorrect. White nationalism is a far greater threat to American democracy than jihadism, and always has been. But there are actually two challenges posed by white nationalism: One is the threat posed to American communities by attacks like the one in El Paso, which law enforcement can and should prevent. The other is the threat the ideology the attackers support poses to American democracy, which can be defeated only through politics, and only by the American people themselves. “There’s an … [Read more...] about Only the Right Can Defeat White Nationalism
Censorship Won’t Stop Racist Extremism, It’ll Hurt the Left
After Payton Gendron allegedly murdered ten people at a grocery store in Buffalo, Gov. Kathy Hochul called for a new push to censor extremist views on social media . That’s a badly misguided response. The white supremacist ideology that shaped Gendron’s crime is despicable, and it is indeed dangerous . But the government pressuring social media companies to crack down on noxious ideologies is exactly the wrong solution. Free speech is both valuable in itself and essential for social progress . Sacrificing it for the sake of fighting right-wing extremism would be dangerous for society as a whole—and it wouldn’t even be an effective strategy for combating the ugly ideas about “replacement” spouted by the shooter. Hochul’s Call for Censorship After describing the shooting as a result of “philosophies filled with hate” that is “spreading like a virus” online, Hochul said she was “calling on the CEOs of all the social media platforms to examine their policies.” … [Read more...] about Censorship Won’t Stop Racist Extremism, It’ll Hurt the Left
A woman was attacked by a mountain lion in Northern California. Her dog may have saved her
On Monday afternoon, a woman and her Belgian Malinois named Eva began walking along a trail off Highway 299 near the Northern California town of Big Bar, a little over an hour’s drive west of Redding. While walking with her dog ahead of her, she saw movement and was “instantly struck and swiped at by a mountain lion,” said Capt. Patrick Foy of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Law Enforcement Division. “She screamed and the dog immediately engaged the mountain lion,” Foy said. “They were in the middle of a pretty vicious fight.” The woman and a passerby fought the lion off, but Eva was badly injured. “My dog is my hero,” Erin Wilson, 24, told the Sacramento Bee . “And I owe her my life.” Advertisement Eva may have had her own heroes — Wilson and the passerby, identified by the Bee as Sharon Houston, suffered non-life-threatening scratches and bite wounds fighting off the big cat as it held Eva in its jaws. “The dog is not going to win that,” Foy … [Read more...] about A woman was attacked by a mountain lion in Northern California. Trump urges Oz to ‘declare victory’ before vote tally complete in Pennsylvania
Former president Donald Trump on Wednesday began sowing doubt about the results of the neck-and-neck Republican Senate primary in Pennsylvania between his endorsed candidate, celebrity TV doctor Mehmet Oz, and hedge fund manager David McCormick, urging Oz to "declare victory" before all the votes are counted. Pennsylvania, a state Trump won in 2016, but lost in 2020, was at the center of his baseless claims that fraud cost him the election, and he suggested Wednesday something nefarious could happen in Oz's race. Trump falsely claimed victory in Pennsylvania in 2020 and sought to stop mail-in ballots from being counted. On Wednesday, the former president sought to declare on his social media site, Truth Social, that Oz had won, even though the race has not been called. He derided the mail-in ballots, posting: "Here we go again! In Pennsylvania they are unable to count the Mail-in Ballots. It is a BIG MESS. Our Country should go to paper ballots, with same day voting. Just done in … [Read more...] about Trump urges Oz to ‘declare victory’ before vote tally complete in Pennsylvania
