The agreed reforms, providing income support for the poor and allowing people to retire earlier, are the centrepiece of the government’s controversial 2019 “people’s budget”. But critics say the policies are unsustainable for Italy’s already-strained public finances. The agreement means that, despite having to make some concessions after a drawn-out battle with Brussels over the budget, the two ruling parties get to keep their flagship election promises to voters. “These are two measures...this government is proud of,” Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte told reporters at a press conference yesterday. “This is a government that keeps its promises.” A woman reads the election manifesto on the M5S website. Scientists are battling stereotypical depictions of themselves with #StillAScientist
News / UK and world by Press Association May 10, 2018, 6:38 pm FacebookTwitterLinkedInWhatsAppEmail Sign up to our Daily newsletter A hashtag campaign is showing the world that scientists are as diverse as the fields they study. #StillAScientist was created this week by wildlife biologist and PhD researcher Imogene Cancellare after an exchange with someone on Instagram who expressed the view that science and glamour should be kept separate. He told her that being “glamorous” watered down her science communication efforts. “I responded by saying that these two things aren’t mutually exclusive, that it’s important to challenge these kinds of stereotypes, and, whether dressed down or made up, I’m still a scientist,” Cancellare told the Press Association. “While his comments made me laugh, professional opportunities continue to be impacted by this kind of narrow-minded rhetoric. I get these comments all the time, … [Read more...] about Scientists are battling stereotypical depictions of themselves with #StillAScientist
Newt Gingrich, Mary Mayhew: Hope for those trapped in welfare dependency — Thanks to Trump
close Video Trump administration taking up welfare reform HUD Secretary Ben Carson announces rent hike for those receiving federal housing help. Doug McKelway has the story. Republicans and members of the Trump administration must keep up the pressure and focus on achieving welfare reform. When President Clinton signed the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996, many believed that the law would indeed “end welfare as we know it.” It’s what we intended when Congress created the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program and implemented work requirements to restore welfare to its original intent as a springboard to self-sufficiency. So many thoughts come to your mind, some are chronological, bound by time and events, but many are those, which are eternal, which constituted that person – his sensitivities, concerns, simplicity, love, and compassion, to which you were a witness. Justice Rajindar Sachar’s life can be easily encompassed by his achievements as a judge and later his immense contribution in public life. The loss we have suffered, the void it has created is immense. A man who was thinking and speaking about the concerns of the people and the nation persistently and also penning down his ideas on every crucial issue is no more. Many told me in personal conversations that they have lost a mentor, a guide, a fatherly figure, a visionary, a man who was like a protective umbrella over them … [Read more...] about In Remembering Justice Rajindar Sachar: Loss Of A Sane Voice In Troubled Times
