Mandatory quarantine to be cut to five days from May

March 29, 2023 by koreajoongangdaily.joins.com

Health officials sit at an empty government-run Covid-19 screening clinic in Jung District, central Seoul, on Wednesday. [YONHAP] Anyone who tests positive for Covid-19 will have to quarantine for five days, not seven, from early May. The mandate could be entirely lifted in July, meaning that people won't have to isolate even if they come down with the virus. Under the current system, patients must report their infection to local health authorities and quarantine for a week. If they refuse to isolate, they face up to a year in prison or 10 million won ($7,700) in fines. The mask mandate for high-risk facilities could also be lifted in July. Since March 20, the Korean government has allowed people to unmask on public transportation, but masks are still required at hospitals, pharmacies, nursing homes, welfare centers for the disabled and mental health centers. Visitors to pharmacies in large supermarkets or subway stations, however, do not have to wear masks. If the … [Read more...] about Mandatory quarantine to be cut to five days from May

‘Modern Day Lynching’: Boston Globe Op-Ed Compares DEI Opponents To Murderers

March 28, 2023 by dailycaller.com

The Boston Globe published an op-ed Tuesday which claimed that opposition of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives is the modern equivalent of lynching. Filmmaker Ya’Ke Smith authored the op-ed , which compared the efforts to ban DEI in conservative states to the racially motivated murder of black Americans. Smith claims that, just lynching was once the primary means of punshing a black person for standing up against the societal status quo, attacks on DEI are now seen as the preferred method of quelling black resistance. States that attempt to limit or ban DEI are, “the equivalent of the tightened rope, and just as suffocating,” Smith wrote. (RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: Norfolk Southern Spent Years Pushing Woke DEI Initiatives Prior To East Palestine Train Derailment) Smith goes on to argue that the goals of DEI are being caricatured by its opponents, drawing on his own experience working in a DEI department. He claims that the purpose of DEI is to educate people about … [Read more...] about ‘Modern Day Lynching’: Boston Globe Op-Ed Compares DEI Opponents To Murderers

The Boss Paid for Dinner, and Then Complained the Next Day. What Do We Do?

March 29, 2023 by www.nytimes.com

My husband’s boss, an executive at a multinational firm, came to our city on vacation and invited us to dinner. We made reservations at our favorite restaurant. When the bill came, the boss’s husband picked up the check and said: “We’ve got this.” We thanked them and said we hadn’t intended for them to pay. The next day, my husband received an email from his boss saying he just saw the credit card charge, which was larger than expected. He planned to ask the restaurant if there was an error. We were embarrassed; we ordered more to drink than them. So, we pulled up the menu online, totaled our share with tax and tip, and sent them a check. (It was $37 more than their share.) We apologized for not insisting on splitting the bill. Did we do the right thing? WIFE Well, you didn’t do the wrong thing, but you may have overreacted. In your view, the boss believed he was overcharged by about $40. That seems like small potatoes to make a fuss about, considering he hadn’t bothered to check … [Read more...] about The Boss Paid for Dinner, and Then Complained the Next Day. What Do We Do?

Who is Chelsy Davy—Prince Harry’s ex he feared would be “harassed to death”

March 29, 2023 by www.newsweek.com

Before he met and married Meghan Markle , Prince Harry embarked on a number of high-profile relationships with women within the orbit of the royal family and British high society. Of his relationships, the most prominent was with Zimbabwe-born Chelsy Davy, whose family ran a big game farm in South Africa. Within months of their relationship becoming public, Davy was a figure of intense public interest—something Harry has since spoken of his, and her, discomfort over. In court filings, made as part of his ongoing lawsuit against the publishers of the British tabloid Daily Mail over historic phone-hacking and privacy invasion allegations, the prince said that Davy was the victim of unlawful information-gathering techniques such as wiretapping and bugging. The media intrusion, the prince said, made Davy feel as if she was being "hunted." In the end, he said, she questioned whether she wanted a "lifetime of being stalked?" Here, Newsweek looks at who Chelsy Davy is and … [Read more...] about Who is Chelsy Davy—Prince Harry’s ex he feared would be “harassed to death”

How the Right Turned Radical and the Left Became Depressed

March 29, 2023 by www.nytimes.com

One of the notable dynamics of American life today is that conservatives report being personally happier than liberals but also seem more politically discontented. The political left has become more institutionalist, more invested in experts and establishments, even as progressive culture seems more shadowed by unhappiness and even mental illness. Meanwhile conservatives claim greater contentment in their private lives — and then go out and vote for paranoid outsiders and burn-it-down populists. These dynamics aren’t entirely new: As Musa al-Gharbi writes in an essay for American Affairs, the happiness gap between liberals and conservatives is a persistent social-science finding, visible across several eras and many countries. Meanwhile, the view that “my life is pretty good, but the country is going to hell,” which seems to motivate a certain kind of middle-class Donald Trump supporter, would have been unsurprising to hear in a bar or at a barbecue in 1975 or 1990, no less than … [Read more...] about How the Right Turned Radical and the Left Became Depressed

King and Queen Consort arrive in Berlin for first state visit

March 29, 2023 by news.sky.com

The King and Queen Consort are in Germany - the first state visit since the start of the new monarch's reign. The couple arrived at Berlin's Brandenburg Airport at about 1pm UK time, and visited the Brandenburg Gate, the first time the landmark has been used to welcome any visiting head of state. Day one of their three-day tour in one of the EU's leading nations will also include a state dinner with President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The King took time to greet individuals who were waiting at the gate and spoke to a group of girls who had recently visited London, and a schoolchild who he asked: "No school today?" The King will head to the Presidential Palace, where he will learn what Germany is doing to support Ukraine, and address the German parliament, speaking in both English and German. It is rumoured that some of the King's German cousins have been invited to attend the event. One of these relatives include Prince Donatus of Hesse, who dined with the late Queen … [Read more...] about King and Queen Consort arrive in Berlin for first state visit

The newly-crowned English national champion was a Team GB member at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 before eyeing up a completely different challenge for a third shot at the Games. The Londoner discovered a passion and talent for cycling during lockdown and, after much consideration, decided to pursue it as an alternative career. He had high hopes of making the grade but, after finding differences between recreational and professional life in the saddle not to his liking, switched back to his first love after 18 months away. Results would suggest the 28-year-old has made a smart decision. He marked his return to competitive action by teaming up with Aaron McKibbin to win a … [Read more...] about Ashley Facey eyes Paralympic table tennis glory after ditching saddle for paddle

Helping People Pay Their Sky-High Water Bills Is a SNAP

March 29, 2023 by www.newsweek.com

Everything is more expensive these days—even tap water. U.S. water utility prices have been rising faster than general inflation , driven in large part by a need to replace and update aging infrastructure. New regulations to remove "forever chemicals" from drinking water will surely drive costs even higher. Although these investments are needed, low-income households can struggle to afford this essential service. That concern propelled Congress to introduce the first federal Low Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP) in 2020. Administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), LIHWAP was an emergency measure to aid a nation reeling from COVID-19. The program is set to expire at the end of this year, and some in Congress are calling to make LIHWAP a permanent, ongoing program. Before making LIHWAP a permanent part of America's alphabet soup of anti-poverty programs, we ought to consider a simpler approach to water assistance: allowing … [Read more...] about Helping People Pay Their Sky-High Water Bills Is a SNAP

Trump lawyer claims hush money probe is “dead” as investigation continues

March 29, 2023 by www.newsweek.com

A lawyer for Donald Trump has claimed the hush money investigation into him is "dead," one week from the day the former president claimed he would be arrested as part of the probe. Trump attorney Lindsey Halligan told Newsmax that the "weak" case against the former president is ending with no indictment for the Republican. Halligan's claim appeared to be more of a suggestion rather than an indication from authorities, adding that if Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg 's inquiry is not "dead" then "it should be." Trump made an uncorroborated claim that he would be arrested in New York on Tuesday, March 21 , as part of the investigation into whether the $130,000 he arranged to be paid to adult film star Stormy Daniels to keep an alleged affair the pair had a secret before the 2016 election amounted to a campaign violation. Trump has denied any wrongdoing, and denies having an affair with Daniels in 2006. It is widely believed that a grand jury in New York who have … [Read more...] about Trump lawyer claims hush money probe is “dead” as investigation continues

Blinken hints China peace plan for Ukraine is “cynical trap”

March 29, 2023 by www.newsweek.com

The top diplomats of Ukraine and the United States on Tuesday jointly cautioned against giving any weight to alternate peace plans that seek a cease-fire without the full withdrawal of invading Russian forces, in a subtle rebuff of a recent proposal by China. "Ill-advised concessions to the aggressor would only encourage Russia to intensify its attacks on democracy, giving it time to rebuild its military capabilities and resume the armed offensive against Ukraine," Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine's foreign minister, said at a virtual forum hosted by the U.S. State Department. Publicly, Kyiv and Moscow have been cautiously receptive to China's 12-point position paper, which reaffirms the "territorial integrity of all countries" without directly mentioning Ukraine, references "legitimate security interests" in deference to Russia, and calls for a quick end to hostilities on the ground. Outside of Kyiv's government, where elected officials tend to speak more freely, senior Ukrainian … [Read more...] about Blinken hints China peace plan for Ukraine is “cynical trap”
