It comes as 111 flood alerts and 72 flood warnings have been issued in England , 14 of which have been declared for Somerset. The Environment Agency says the decision to declare a major incident at this time is a “precautionary move and will mean partners become more coordinated and ready to support and take action should the situation worsen.” The recent heavy rain has triggered widespread flooding of the Somerset Levels and Moors, designed to store flood water when the rivers flowing through them burst their banks. Enhanced pumping began on Tuesday evening at Northmoor to reduce the amount of water being stored until river levels allow pumping to resume at Currymoor, which remains full. “It’s a good investment”: Young couple buys and renovates old laundromat
One couple's journey to renovate a tired laundromat has captured viral attention as they finally opened their new and improved community hub. Erin Carpenter, 30, and her husband Jonathan, 33, have been renovating properties for years, and while on the hunt for their next project stumbled on a laundromat in their hometown of Charleston, South Carolina. "A laundromat was never really on my radar personally, but Jon is a very smart entrepreneur and businessman, he's always been interested in the concept of a laundromat," Carpenter told Newsweek . Married in June 2020, the couple had their own experience of using laundromats during their 4-month honeymoon living on the road in an RV: "We worked remotely, so we sometimes needed to work from laundromats. We took so many photos of them," said Carpenter. "They were places we spent a lot of time and there aren't a lot that are cozy and comfortable." Russian charged with “badmouthing” military after private call wire-tapped
A Moscow police officer could face a lengthy prison term after the wiretapping of his phone revealed that he had criticized the Kremlin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Sergei Vedel, who was originally from Bucha, Ukraine, the scene of alleged Russian atrocities last year, had made disparaging comments about the war in conversations with his relatives, according to an indictment that was reported on the Telegram channel of opposition politician Ilya Yashin. He had worked as a driver for one of the chiefs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. A month before the start of the war, his phone was wiretapped, which Yashin said could have been as part of an investigation into his boss or because of his Ukrainian origins. It was discovered that during his phone conversations with friends last March, Vedel denied that Ukraine was run by Nazis, a stance that was one of the Kremlin's justifications for its war. He also said that one of the reasons for the war was a bid by Moscow to … [Read more...] about Russian charged with “badmouthing” military after private call wire-tapped
‘Powerful Propaganda Tool’: Bill Maher Panelists React To TikTok Ban Proposals
TikTok is a “powerful propaganda tool” that should be banned, a panelist on “Real Time With Bill Maher” said Friday night, calling the Chinese-owned app “a defense threat.” “Imagine a brain jack inserted into the neural network of two-thirds of our youth under the age of 25, who spend more time on TikTok than every other media source combined,” said Scott Galloway, a professor of marketing at New York University. “And then imagine how easy it would be to put your thumb on the scale of anti-American content and recognize that they would be stupid not to elegantly, insidiously, covertly, raise a generation of American civil, nonprofit, military, government leaders, day by day, minute by minute, who just feel a little shittier about America.” (RELATED: ‘He Won’t Protect America’: Gov. Noem Predicts Biden Won’t Sign Ban On TikTok) “If we had that tool with China, we would do the exact same thing,” Galloway continued. “This is a defense threat, it should absolutely be banned.” … [Read more...] about ‘Powerful Propaganda Tool’: Bill Maher Panelists React To TikTok Ban Proposals
Solar Companies Go BANKRUPT Once Subsidies Are Cut
Two British solar energy firms, Climate Energy and the Mark Group , collapsed into administration (another word for insolvency in the U.K.) within two days of each other. Climate Energy was the U.K.’s largest independent energy efficiency company, with revenues of £47 million last year, but now they’re in dire straits. The company has blamed its collapse on cuts in government solar subsidies by the Tory government. The Mark Group, the other solar company to bust, also blamed U.K. conservatives for its demise, but the company’s New Zealand branch and two separate branches in the United States also went under in recent months. The Tory government says that it is supporting “good-value green energy” and that it wants to “cut emissions as cost-effectively as possible.” Tories argue that technology costs have fallen, and therefore, consumers need to be protected from higher energy bills. In 2014, energy bills in the United Kingdom were roughly 54 percent higher … [Read more...] about Solar Companies Go BANKRUPT Once Subsidies Are Cut
