Nigella Lawson got off a plane just hours earlier and is now sitting cross-legged on the sofa at the Taj Mahal Palace’s Neptune Suite. Dressed in what seems to be her uniform of choice in public — black shirt and trousers with white shoes — you wouldn’t know she’s just arrived in Mumbai. She’s already familiar with the hotel staff, calling her butler by name, and when she notices someone with a hot water bag, she rummages through her suitcase for a pain relief patch. This ability to connect with anyone, anytime, will win over the diners who’ll be sitting down to a meal curated by Britain’s ‘culinary royalty’ this weekend. She’s in India thanks to Evolve Luxury Marketing and American Express, who are co-presenting The World Series dinners in Mumbai and Delhi. But, if you think her dishes will involve ego-propping techniques and unheard of ingredients, you don’t know the ‘domestic goddess’. She’s only ever cooked for pleasure. “I don’t think any of my recipes [dishes like chicken with … [Read more...] about Nigella Lawson on India, influence and Instagram

Katie Price’s many brushes with the law as she’s spared jail for ‘threatening’ text
Katie Price avoided a custodial prison sentence today after previously admitted breaching a restraining order against her ex-husband’s fiancee. The star has been handed an 18-month community order at Lewes Crown Court to carry out 170 hours of unpaid work after admitting breaching a restraining order by sending abusive messages to her ex-husband Kieran Hayler about his fiancée Michelle Penticost. Sentencing, judge Stephen Mooney told Price: “In my judgement, this offence was committed out of anger. “The words you used were highly offensive and inflammatory so the breach cannot be considered minor. “In my judgement, balancing the aggravating and mitigating and aggravating factors, the appropriate sentence is a medium level community order.” Katie Price arriving at Lewes Crown Court alongside Carl Woods on Friday morning ( Image: SplashNews.com) The star has had multiple court appearances over recent years ( Image: PA) Katie was said to have … [Read more...] about Katie Price’s many brushes with the law as she’s spared jail for ‘threatening’ text
High office: On the Opposition and presidential polls
The BJP has stolen a march over the Opposition by naming Droupadi Murmu as its candidate for President . With the support of BJP allies and regional parties such as Odisha’s BJD and Andhra Pradesh’s YSRCP, she is poised to win and become the first from a tribal community to occupy the highest office of the Republic. The significance of her elevation is particularly pronounced in the 75th year of India’s independence. A tribal woman succeeding a Dalit in the highest office of the country is a remarkable testimony to the deepening of Indian democracy, notwithstanding the disturbing signs of the mobilisation of subaltern communities for majoritarian politics. Ms. Murmu will be the second woman to hold the highest office, after Pratibha Patil, and at 64, she will be the youngest President in the country’s history. From Mayurbhanj in Odisha, part of the region that houses a vast majority of India’s aboriginal population, Ms. Murmu was a teacher, and joined the BJP in 1997. She was a … [Read more...] about High office: On the Opposition and presidential polls
TV Rights Trial of PSG Chief Al-Khelaifi and Ex-FIFA official Valcke opens
Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and FIFA ‘s former secretary general Jerome Valcke went on trial in Switzerland on Monday accused of corruption in the attribution of World Cup TV rights. Al-Khelaifi, who is also chairman of Qatar-owned broadcaster beIN Media, is charged with inciting Valcke to commit “aggravated criminal mismanagement.” The hearing, which has already been delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic, is scheduled to last until September 25 at the Federal Criminal Court of Bellinzona. If the hearing runs its course, it will be the first judgement handed down in Switzerland, the seat of most international sports organisations, on the 20 or so proceedings opened in the last five years surrounding FIFA. But it opens under another cloud as suspicions of collusion between the Swiss prosecution and FIFA have undermined its credibility. Valcke, who until 2015 was the right-hand man of now ousted FIFA president Sepp Blatter, faces the bulk of … [Read more...] about TV Rights Trial of PSG Chief Al-Khelaifi and Ex-FIFA official Valcke opens
Running on empty: An eating disorder in disguise
"Being around food is intensely stressful for me. I think I hide it from my daughter pretty well, but I get anxious when she rejects food, or won't finish everything on her plate." At the UK's leading private rehab and addiction centre a group of women ranging in age from 34 to 76 are gathered to talk about the effect their eating disorders are having on their children. All are university-educated, with successful careers. Sophy, aged 42, is bringing up her three-year-old daughter alone. "I've had anorexia since the age of 20, and I'm terribly worried that she'll develop an eating disorder," she says. "I try to give her a balanced diet but I'm not the most imaginative when it comes to putting meals together. Also, I worry about her eating alone: most nights I just have some cottage cheese and a glass of red wine after she's gone to bed, but I don't really sit at the table as such. The problem is it's just the two of us ... it would be good if we could eat together, I know. At least … [Read more...] about Running on empty: An eating disorder in disguise
Japan high court rejects paternity harassment allegations
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 TOKYO (AP) — A Japanese High Court on Thursday rejected an appeal by a former brokerage manager alleging on-the-job harassment and unlawful dismissal after he took parental leave while working at Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley. The case of Glen Wood, a Canadian who has lived in Japan for more than three decades, has come to symbolize concerns over “paternity harassment,” or “pata hara.” Wood's is a rare case, for Japan, of a father seeking to take parental leave. Maternity harassment is more common. Wood began his fight in 2017, alleging he was harassed and forced from his job after taking parental leave when his son was born in 2015. The company rejected Wood's request for parental leave. His son was born prematurely and he rushed to see him though the company told him to just keep working, according to the lawsuit. When Wood returned to work in 2016, he was stripped of some … [Read more...] about Japan high court rejects paternity harassment allegations
Paris Saint-Germain Chief Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Jerome Valcke Trials Begins on Monday
FIFA’s disgraced former secretary general Jerome Valcke and Paris Saint-Germain chief Nasser Al-Khelaifi go on trial in Switzerland on Monday in the latest chapter of football’s seemingly endless corruption saga. The two men have been indicted for alleged corruption in the attribution of football broadcasting rights — Al-Khelaifi is also the boss of beIN Media. The hearing, which has already been delayed because of the coronavirus, is scheduled to last until September 25 at the Federal Criminal Court of Bellinzona. But it will open under another cloud as suspicions of collusion between the Swiss prosecution and FIFA have undermined its credibility. Centre stage is Valcke, former right-hand man of ousted FIFA president Sepp Blatter, who appears in two separate cases of television rights corruption — he faces up to five years in prison if found guilty. The 59-year-old Frenchman stands accused of wanting to transfer the Middle East and North Africa rights for screening the … [Read more...] about Paris Saint-Germain Chief Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Jerome Valcke Trials Begins on Monday

The threatening behaviour charge against Carl Woods after an argument with partner Katie Price has been dropped, the CPS confirmed on Monday. Carl - who popped the question to the mum-of-five last year - is said to be "relieved to finally have his name cleared". In August 2021, the former Love Island contestant, 33, was charged with using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour following an incident close to Katie's home. Carl appeared in court earlier this year, with wife-to-be Katie by his side as he arrived at Colchester Magistrates' Court. Football coach awaits Supreme Court ruling on 50-yard-line prayer
Joseph Kennedy, a former high school football coach in Bremerton, Washington, is waiting for the Supreme Court to rule on his case about prayer. He insists he is a centrist that most Americans would agree with on religious freedom issues and the U.S. Constitution. Kennedy, a former U.S. Marine, made a habit of walking to the 50-yard line after each game to bend a knee and offer a prayer of gratitude. As more players gathered with Kennedy for his prayer over time, some of them and families said they felt "compelled to participate" out of fear they would lose playing time. Eventually, the Bremerton School District began battling Kennedy over his practices involving his faith and his work and he lost his job. He filed a lawsuit in 2016. After a series of appeals, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear his case in 2019 but did hear it this year. Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins, Chicago Bears quarterback Nick Foles and other NFL players submitted a brief supporting … [Read more...] about Football coach awaits Supreme Court ruling on 50-yard-line prayer
