Pfizer announced Saturday that tweaking its COVID-19 vaccine to better target the omicron variant is safe and works — just days before regulators debate whether to offer Americans updated booster shots this fall. The vaccines currently used in the U.S. still offer strong protection against severe COVID-19 disease and death -- especially if people have gotten a booster dose. But those vaccines target the original coronavirus strain and their effectiveness against any infection dropped markedly when the super-contagious omicron mutant emerged. Now with omicron’s even more transmissible relatives spreading widely, the Food and Drug Administration is considering ordering a recipe change for the vaccines made by both Pfizer and rival Moderna in hopes that modified boosters could better protect against another COVID-19 surge expected this fall and winter. Pfizer and its partner BioNTech studied two different ways of updating their shots -- targeting just omicron, or a … [Read more...] about Pfizer says tweaked COVID-19 shots boost omicron protection

Un-Layering the Delicious South Indian Malabar Parotta
South Indian cuisine has been given a rigid image by North India, among other parts of the country. This stereotypical image carries dishes such as Idli Sambar, Dosa, and Uttapam. One dish that slips right out from this stereotypical image but is equally popular, so much so that it can be considered as one of the signature dishes in South India, is the Malabar Parotta. Known for its flaky and soft texture and its folded and layered appearance, parotta is a south Indian flatbread that is quite popular for its versatility. You name it and this flatbread can become quite an apt element on plates containing all kinds of dishes. From Rasam to Sambhar, from beef fry to chicken curry, from aloo curry to chutney, parotta can be severed will everything. The origins of the flaky flatbread are still not clear but it is believed that its roots can be traced back to the Arabian nations. The sea trade being the medium for the original recipe to come to India and transform according to the … [Read more...] about Un-Layering the Delicious South Indian Malabar Parotta
Michelin-starred restaurant Frances returns to San Francisco, but with a conflicting twist
Frances is officially back, according to Hoodline . The Michelin-starred restaurant from acclaimed chef Melissa Perello re-opened on Thursday, June 23, but there was a major change to the format — there is no longer an a la carte menu. Admirers of the California cuisine restaurant, located at 3870 17th Street, will remember classic bites such as the applewood smoked bacon beignets: little bite-sized balls with a fried crust but soft, chewy bite-sized balls that were best when dipped in the maple chive creme fraiche. Another favorite was the uber-popular Lumberjack Cake dessert — a coconut-sweetened, dense hunk of dark-brown flour and butter with chopped peaches, Medjool dates and often apricot slices folded in. As of now, though, neither can be found on the new prix fixe menu. In September 2021, Perello started a pop-up series out of the Frances kitchen, dubbed the FXMP dinner series (Frances x Melissa Perello), which also had a prix fixe menu format. It marked the first … [Read more...] about Michelin-starred restaurant Frances returns to San Francisco, but with a conflicting twist
Kickstart your healthy weight loss journey with Optifast
More than 40 per cent of adults in England have gained weight since the first lockdown in March 2020, according to a 2021 Public Health England survey. The research found that people gained more than half a stone on average, but one in five put on a stone or more. For those aged between 35 to 65, the average weight gain was more than 10lbs. Separate NHS research found that people seeking help to lose weight during the pandemic were 5lb heavier on average than those starting a health service weight loss programme in the previous three years. Five pounds might not sound like much, but it is considered “clinically significant”. Gaining even 2.2lb can increase a person’s risk of Type 2 diabetes by about 8 per cent, the NHS warns. With life now bearing some resemblance to pre-Covid normality, we can think about getting ourselves on the road to a healthy lifestyle and weight. But anyone who has previously attempted to traverse the quagmire that is the dozens of diet plans out there … [Read more...] about Kickstart your healthy weight loss journey with Optifast
‘Ready for debate on Mysuru development’
With both Congress and BJP both claiming credit for taking up developmental projects for Mysuru, Congress spokesperson M. Lakshmana said he will be in front of BJP MP Pratap Simha’s office on June 29 for a public discussion on the contentious matter. Speaking to reporters in Mysuru on Saturday, Mr. Lakshmana said he will come with all the necessary documents to prove Congress party’s contribution to Mysuru. “I will bring a table and two chairs at noon on June 29. I will stay put in front of your office (at Jaladarshini) till you come”, he said. Referring to Mr. Simha’s invitation to former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for a debate, Mr. Lakshmana said he was ready to come instead of the former Chief Minister. It may be recalled here that Mr. Simha had ignored a similar offer to debate by Mr. Lakshmana a few months ago. Meanwhile, referring to the ten-lane expressway between Mysuru and Bengaluru, which is presently under construction, Mr. Lakshmana said the credit for the expansion … [Read more...] about ‘Ready for debate on Mysuru development’
‘Elvis’ Fact or Fiction: Colonel Tom Parker Biographer on What’s Real and Not in Baz Luhrmann Biopic
Click here to read the full article. Does the phrase “That’s All Right, Mama” apply to the new “ Elvis ” movie… as in, “that’s all correct, ma’am”? No one is probably expecting that ; any practiced watcher of biopics knows virtually any example will take deep liberties with the facts for dramatic purposes. And maybe it’s a given that a director who puts hip-hop and hard rock on his period-film soundtracks, as Baz Luhrmann does, might favor effect over total verisimilitude. Still, “Elvis” is right on enough counts — literally or spiritually — that it’s worth trying to separate fact from fiction in the movie’s narrative of Elvis Presley (played by Austin Butler) and his nearly career-long manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). There may be no one better to go to who can provide the truth on both Presley and “the Colonel,” in tandem, than the latter’s biographer, Alanna Nash. Nash, a veteran music journalist, published “The Colonel: The Extraordinary Story of Colonel … [Read more...] about ‘Elvis’ Fact or Fiction: Colonel Tom Parker Biographer on What’s Real and Not in Baz Luhrmann Biopic
Jeremy Corbyn hopes the NHS might be Boris Johnson’s weakness – but it’s not enough to stop a Tory win
Labour has not had much good news to celebrate in this election campaign, but there is one ray of hope for the party. The NHS is now cited by more people than Brexit when they are asked to choose from a list of issues likely to determine how they will vote. According to Ipsos Mori, health (60 per cent) has overtaken Brexit (56 per cent). The NHS is the issue cited most often by people who backed Labour at the 2017 election (68 per cent). But it is also important for those who voted Conservative then: 58 per cent mention health, putting it in second place behind Brexit (69 per cent). However, other polls suggest that when people have to choose the single most important issue, Brexit trumps health. If the Conservatives were hoping their manifesto pledge to provide “50,000 more nurses” would help to neutralise the NHS issue, they will likely be disappointed. Although initially reported by much of the media as a pledge to recruit 50,000 extra nurses, it emerged that the … [Read more...] about Jeremy Corbyn hopes the NHS might be Boris Johnson’s weakness – but it’s not enough to stop a Tory win
