TikTok CEO Says Employees in China Will Have Access to Only ‘Narrow, Non-Sensitive’ U.S. User Data
Click here to read the full article. The CEO of TikTok tried to reassure U.S. lawmakers — who have renewed concerns over its sharing of U.S. user data with employees in China — that the video app company is taking steps to restrict that access to only a “narrow” slice of data. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew sent a letter dated June 30 to nine GOP senators in response to their inquiry this week “demanding answers on TikTok’s backdoor data access for Beijing,” a reference to China’s communist regime. Fears that TikTok represents a national security threat go back several years. In August 2020, President Trump ordered TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell majority control of TikTok to American entities under the threat of TikTok being shut down in the U.S.; that was blocked by U.S. federal courts. F1 news LIVE: Lewis Hamilton urged to step aside and retire from Formula 1
Formula 1’s rising popularity driven by Netflix series Formula 1 legends Sir Jackie Stewart and David Coulthard have urged Lewis Hamilton to ‘step aside’ and ‘retire’ from the sport to avoid the ‘pain’ of not being able to compete as he used to behind the wheel. Hamilton has struggled to adapt to Mercedes new W13 car in 2022 only finishing on the podium twice in nine races and has repeatedly been out-driven by teammate George Russell. He sits almost 100 points behind rival Max Verstappen in the standings and the Silver Arrows are still coming to terms with their car being the third-fastest on the grid. Stewart explained that he feels Hamilton is finding it difficult to handle the skill of his new teammate and doesn’t believe the seven-time wolrd champion can make it back to the top level of the sport saying: “He’s now struggling a little bit because he’s had a new teammate who’s been quicker than him in qualifying so far, which is gonna be difficult for him to handle. … [Read more...] about F1 news LIVE: Lewis Hamilton urged to step aside and retire from Formula 1

Big Tech’s big problem is also its ‘best-kept secret’: Caste discrimination
America’s most prominent caste equity activist, Thenmozhi Soundararajan, was slated to give a talk at Google in April, for Dalit History Month. She was ready, she said, to explain to one of the world’s largest tech companies that caste oppression is a problem — and that it probably exists under its roof, too. She was armed with years worth of stats gathered through her civil rights organization, Equality Labs, which show that two-thirds of Dalits, those who have been historically oppressed under India’s caste system, have faced discrimination in their U.S. workplace. But as news spread of her impending appearance, not everyone at Google was happy. A handful of Hindu employees said that they felt “targeted” on the basis of religion, a company statement and several anonymous interviews confirmed. They appealed to Google leadership asking that the speech be canceled, and so it was. Soundararajan was informed her talk would not go forward, The Washington Post first reported. … [Read more...] about Big Tech’s big problem is also its ‘best-kept secret’: Caste discrimination
Tilting at Windmills: Biden Pushes Wind Power, Ditches Oil Leaders
President Joe Biden on Thursday shunned U.S. gas and oil leaders when they met with Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, instead issuing an announcement of a partnership between the federal government and states to push for offshore wind infrastructure. Biden has been slamming the oil and gas industry, blaming them for underproducing and profiteering even as the president, since Day One in office, has done everything possible to hamper domestic production of fossil fuels. “I didn’t know they’d get their feelings hurt that quickly,” Biden said Tuesday, calling Chevron CEO Mike Wirth and other CEOs “mildly sensitive” for their response to his criticism. Biden said Sunday he would not meet with the oil industry executives, asserting he has administration officials to take the lead, as Breitbart News reported . Jennifer Granholm, U.S. energy secretary, speaks during a news conference in the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room at the White House in Washington, D.C., US, on … [Read more...] about Tilting at Windmills: Biden Pushes Wind Power, Ditches Oil Leaders
Need star-rating for trucks too, says Daimler India’s Arya
Commercial vehicles such as trucks too should be part of the government’s scheme for crash-linked safety performance star rating system, Daimler India Commercial Vehicles CEO and MD Satyakam Arya said on Monday. “Why not include commercial vehicles in Bharat NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme)? Are truck drivers not entitled to safer roads?” asked Mr. Arya at Safety Pioneer’s Conference organised by Intel India. He said there was a need to have a safety road map for commercial vehicles with the goal of zero fatalities in the first step and zero accidents as the next step. Last week, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had issued a draft notification on Bharat NCAP under which passenger vehicles with up to eight seats would be given zero to five stars following their performance in a crash test, to allow buyers to make a decision based on safety. The programme will come into affect from April 2023. It is not a mandatory scheme, and vehicles will be chosen based on their … [Read more...] about Need star-rating for trucks too, says Daimler India’s Arya
Iran and Venezuela could help Biden’s gas crisis if he lifts U.S. sanctions
Iran and Venezuela, two countries with some of the largest oil and gas reserves on Earth, could serve as unlikely allies to the United States as consumers face soaring energy prices. But President Joe Biden would have to first lift sanctions put in place by his predecessor if these two nations were to play a productive role in the crisis, potentially between 2 million and 2.5 million more barrels per day (bpd) of oil to the global market. And while engaging with the two designated adversaries would likely stir a degree of criticism from hawkish factions at home looking to portray the president as soft on U.S. foes, the rising cost of gas now fluctuating around the unprecedented $5 mark threatened to exact an even higher toll on Biden as his Democratic Party prepared for a contentious midterm election season. "The fact is that if Biden doesn't take a dramatic step to get more oil flowing, he will pay a political price," Esfandyar Batmanghelidj, CEO of the Bourse & Bazaar … [Read more...] about Iran and Venezuela could help Biden’s gas crisis if he lifts U.S. sanctions

Spain and Portugal flights ‘will to be worst affected’ by mass Gatwick cancellations
Flights to popular holiday destinations Spain and Portugal are set to be the worst affected by mass cancellations at Gatwick Airport , travel experts say. Gatwick's bosses have requested that airlines slash their flight schedules in the hope that it will ease pressure on airport services as ongoing staff shortages and a surge in traveller demand continues to create chaos for passengers and staff. Gatwick is now capping daily flights at 825 in July and 850 in August, which will result in the cancellation of around 4,000 flights to some of the most-loved summer holiday destinations, reported the Sun . Gatwick said it has made the decision after a "significant and rapid upturn in air traffic levels" over recent weeks, combined with a "severe lack of staff resources" affecting companies that operate at the airport. The scene at Gatwick Airports North Terminal on June 17 as airport bosses announced they will be imposing mass flight cancellations If the decision wasn't … [Read more...] about Spain and Portugal flights ‘will to be worst affected’ by mass Gatwick cancellations
