Bathroom Scrubber to Killer Suitcase: 5 Bizarre Indian TV Scenes That Kept Us Entertained in Pandemic

September 27, 2020 by www.news18.com

Logic leaves the room when Indian daily soaps try to dive into the unrealistic (read: science-fiction) world of entertainment. This doesn’t necessarily mean that all the content put out by Indian creators for TV is bad, it’s just sometimes the filmmakers and writers try too hard or just don’t care what the viewers think. Over the years, Indian film industries have given us gems that defy all the laws of physics. Flying cars, villains levitating in the air until the hero punches them to the ground, slicing one bullet to kill two bad guys, jeeps flying in the air and colliding with helicopters– the list goes on. But why should movies have all the fun? During the coronavirus lockdown, Indian television kept us hooked with its over-the-top cringy sequences that helped us get through the unproductive, boring days. Here are five times Indian daily soaps bamboozled us with scenes that could give Christopher Nolan run for his money. Bathroom Scrubber – a life saviour A snippet from … [Read more...] about Bathroom Scrubber to Killer Suitcase: 5 Bizarre Indian TV Scenes That Kept Us Entertained in Pandemic

Joan Didion’s Magic Trick

Sign up for it here. “T hink of this as a travel piece,” she might have written. “Imagine it in Sunset magazine: ‘Five Great California Stops Along the Joan Didion Trail.’ ” Or think of this as what it really is: a road trip of magical thinking. I had known that Didion’s Parkinson’s was advancing; seven or eight months earlier, someone had told me that she was vanishing; someone else had told me that for the past two years, she hadn’t been able to speak. I didn’t want her to die. My sense of myself is in many ways wrapped up in the 40 essays in Slouching Towards Bethlehem and The White Album . I don’t know how many times I’ve read Democracy . “Call me the author,” she writes in that novel. “Let the reader be introduced to Joan Didion.” There are people who admire Joan Didion, and people who … [Read more...] about Joan Didion’s Magic Trick

Discovering krypton… much before Superman

May 29, 2016 by www.thehindu.com

When I tried searching “krypton” on the Internet, the top ten results almost alternated between two topics. While one set corresponded to krypton the chemical element, the other set referred to the fictitious planet Krypton – from which the comic book superhero Superman hails from. Back in the 19th century, a Scot by the name William Ramsay and his Englishstudent Morris Travers were searching for gases in the helium family. The two Brits believed that a lighter chemical existed to fit the gap left in the Periodic Table between argon and helium. In that sense, their discovery was in fact an accident. Their process involved boiling a sample of liquified air to get rid of the water, nitrogen, oxygen, helium and argon and finding a lighter element that they expected would fill the gap. The researchers, however, overdid the evaporation, leaving only a heavy gas sample behind. The residue was placed in a Plucker tube connected to an induction coil to produce a spectrum with bright … [Read more...] about Discovering krypton… much before Superman

Project Veritas Sting Catches Twitter Employee Mocking Elon Musk as ‘Special Needs,’ Admitting Wokeness Hurts Profitability

May 18, 2022 by www.breitbart.com

James O’Keefe’s investigative journalism group Project Veritas recently published undercover footage of a Twitter employee admitting that the platform’s woke “ideology” is why the company is not profitable. The employee also mocked Elon Musk as “special needs” for having Asperger’s syndrome. In a recent undercover video from Project Veritas , Twitter Lead Client Partner, Alex Martinez, can be seen discussing how the social media giant’s “ideology” led to it being less “profitable.” Martinez further denigrated Tesla CEO Elon Musk calling him “loony” and mocking the fact that Musk has Asperger’s syndrome. In the video, Martinez heavily criticizes Musk’s stated beliefs on free speech and his hopes to make Twitter more open and accepting of other beliefs. “The rest of us who have been here believe in something that’s good for the planet and not just to give people free speech,” Martinez stated. Discussing censorship on Twitter, Martinez stated: “People don’t know how to make a … [Read more...] about Project Veritas Sting Catches Twitter Employee Mocking Elon Musk as ‘Special Needs,’ Admitting Wokeness Hurts Profitability

2022 is the year of all-inclusive travel, and here’s why

May 18, 2022 by www.sfgate.com

The hotel name Zoetry (in Zoetry Montego Bay Jamaica) has an umlaut mark over the letter “e.” For some travelers, all-inclusive hotels conjure up images of flavorless food served under a heat lamp in lush and vibrant destinations where guests never actually leave the resort grounds. Lower-tier liquor flows freely (the good stuff will cost you more), as the few overindulgers put a damper on the trip. That image is changing, as hotel companies expand their offerings, while redefining what all-inclusive means. HOTELS ARE GROWING THEIR ALL-INCLUSIVE BRANDS Many hotel companies are rapidly adding all-inclusive resorts to their portfolio. Hyatt’s acquisition of Apple Leisure Group in November 2021 made it one of the largest owners of luxury all-inclusive resorts in the world. That acquisition included the luxury-focused AMR Collection, which has beachfront properties in Mexico and Central America. That means there are now more than 100 new resorts for visitors (and where World of … [Read more...] about 2022 is the year of all-inclusive travel, and here’s why

“Trump changed my brother, I want him back”

May 18, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

As children growing up in Miami in the 1970s and 1980s, my brother and I often had skirmishes, typically brought about by frustrations from living with economic struggles and instability. Over the years, we grew closer as we both matured and had families of our own, and shared holidays and family gatherings. Admittedly we both have strong personalities and there were times we didn't see eye to eye, but our differences never got in the way of our respect and love for one another. Now in our fifties and both with stable lives and incomes, I was stunned at how much had changed between us, and in such a short amount of time. Just three years younger than me, my brother and I were raised in a close-knit Cuban immigrant family, and have always remained close as adults, sharing holidays and gathering regularly for family meals at his home, which had become the family gathering spot. Yet beginning in 2016, he seemed to be transformed from a sweet man with a passing interest in politics to … [Read more...] about “Trump changed my brother, I want him back”

Only the Right Can Defeat White Nationalism

August 21, 2019 by www.theatlantic.com

The massacre in El Paso, Texas, has, for the moment, reminded Americans of the danger posed by far-right terrorists. Former national-security officials have demanded that the U.S. government “make addressing this form of terrorism as high a priority as countering international terrorism has become since 9/11.” Retired Marine General John Allen and the former senior U.S. diplomat Brett McGurk have argued that far-right extremism poses “an equal threat” as jihadist groups such as ISIS. This is incorrect. White nationalism is a far greater threat to American democracy than jihadism, and always has been. But there are actually two challenges posed by white nationalism: One is the threat posed to American communities by attacks like the one in El Paso, which law enforcement can and should prevent. The other is the threat the ideology the attackers support poses to American democracy, which can be defeated only through politics, and only by the American people themselves. “There’s an … [Read more...] about Only the Right Can Defeat White Nationalism
