FIFA Racism Study Discovers Two Most Abused Footballers On Social Media

June 19, 2022 by www.news18.com

Zurich: FIFA’s study into racist abuse on social media during Euro 2020 and this year’s Africa Cup of Nations has revealed that nearly half of the players including Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho were targeted across social media platforms during international tournaments. The world’s football governing body has published an independent report on Saturday, highlighting the increasing degree of abuse directed at footballers on social media platforms. In this report England’s problem with social media abuse was emphasised after the defeat to Italy in the Euro 2020 final, in which Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka were viciously attacked online after missing penalties, dailymail.co.uk reports. The newly-released report, which used artificial intelligence to track over 400,000 posts on social media platforms during the semifinals and finals stage of two international competitions (UEFA EURO 2020 and African Cup of Nations 2021), has identified that over 50 … [Read more...] about FIFA Racism Study Discovers Two Most Abused Footballers On Social Media

It Took Me 49 Years to Ask the Right Question About My Father

June 18, 2022 by www.nytimes.com

I always know when Mother’s Day is approaching. I love thinking about what new vegetarian restaurant I might take my mother to or which of the many great photos of her from my childhood I’ll post on Instagram. Father’s Day, on the other hand, has never been on my mental calendar. I usually learn it’s coming when I see an ad for a sturdy piece of luggage or golf gear. I hardly know my father, the jazz vibraphonist Roy Ayers; we’ve met only a few times. He and my mother were never really together. With his consent, she got pregnant deliberately, knowing he wouldn’t be part of our lives. I’ve always known that story, and for most of my life, I’ve been OK with it. I had a wonderful childhood, thanks to my mother and several formidable male role models. So I never really felt my father’s absence. He didn’t break any promises. He didn’t leave. He was just never there in the first place. In my mid-30s, I finally got in touch. Roy was surprisingly open, and when we sat down for lunch, our … [Read more...] about It Took Me 49 Years to Ask the Right Question About My Father

Musical biopics: When box office and critics go ka-chung!

June 23, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

With Elvis , based on the life of The King played by Austin Butler, and his thorny relationship with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks), Baz Luhrman is on familiar ground. The Moulin Rouge! director is known for his extravagantly-produced musical numbers. Elvis is the latest in a long line of musical biopics from 1968’s Funny Girl which Barbra Streisand nailed with her portrayal of Fanny Brice to Andrew Garfield’s delightful personification of Jonathan Larson in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s directorial debut, Tick, Tick... Boom! (2021) . Award darlings Musical biopics, if done right, apart from being first-rate entertainers are award magnets. Andrew Garfield’s Golden Globe win and the Oscar nomination continues the tradition of recognition. George C. Wolfe’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2020), which tells the story of blues singer, Ma Rainey (Viola Davis) and a fraught recording session in 1927 Chicago, received five Oscar nominations and won two for Makeup and … [Read more...] about Musical biopics: When box office and critics go ka-chung!

UEFA Nations League: Erling Haaland Fires Norway to Win Over Serbia

June 3, 2022 by www.news18.com

Striker Erling Haaland’s superb first-half volley gave Norway a surprising 1-0 win away to Serbia as they got their Nations League Group B4 campaign underway on Thursday, but they needed goalkeeping heroics from Orjan Nyland to secure the win. The visitors took the lead in the 26th minute as Martin Odegaard sliced open the defence with a beautiful pass to Marcus Pedersen who crossed for Haaland to deftly volley home from close range with the only shot on target in the first half. Serbia dominated possession and put the Norwegian defence under tremendous pressure in the second half, but Nyland pulled off a string of fine saves to keep his clean sheet intact and secure the three points for his team. Serbia host Slovenia on Sunday, while Norway take on Scandinavian rivals and group leaders Sweden in Stockholm.
