Electric vehicles could take 33% of global sales by 2028-AlixPartners
DETROIT (Reuters) - Electric vehicle sales could reach 33% globally by 2028 and 54% by 2035, as demand accelerates in most major markets, consultant AlixPartners said on Wednesday. EVs accounted for less than 8% of global sales last year, and just under 10% in the first quarter of 2022. To support that demand, automakers and suppliers now expect to invest at least $526 billion on EVs and batteries from 2022-2026, the firm said at its annual Global Automotive Outlook briefing. That is more than double the five-year EV investment forecast of $234 billion from 2020-2024. Those higher investments "have now made EV growth inevitable," according to Mark Wakefield, co-leader of the firm's automotive practice. The industry still faces economic and supply chain challenges during the transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to EVs, Wakefield added. The transition will require "drastic changes to operating models -- not just plants and people, but the whole way of … [Read more...] about Electric vehicles could take 33% of global sales by 2028-AlixPartners
Vietnam central bank to increase forex sales frequency to ensure supply to market
HANOI, June 26 (Reuters): The State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) has announced this week that it will increase the frequency of foreign exchange sales to be ready to supply foreign currencies to the market more often amid bearish global market conditions. The dollar/Vietnamese dong exchange rate has risen 2% from the beginning of this year, in contrast to the downward trend witnessed last year, the SBV said in a statement. "The SBV will manage exchange rate in a way that creates room for the rate to move flexibly and absorb external shocks, at the same time it will intervene in the foreign exchange market to limit excessive fluctuations of the exchange rate," it said. The central bank said it managed to buy large amounts of foreign currencies and increase its reserves thanks to favourable financial conditions in recent years. As of March this year, Vietnam's foreign reserves had reached a record of $110 billion, official data showed. "In the context of unfavourable market movements, … [Read more...] about Vietnam central bank to increase forex sales frequency to ensure supply to market

Teen girl charged with kidnapping, trafficking of 13-year-old: Police
Police on Wednesday morning rescued a 13-year-old girl who was kidnapped by another teenager, in what authorities currently believe was a human trafficking situation. The incident occurred in Canton, Georgia, just after 10:20 a.m. when officers of the Canton Police Department approached a 2014 Dodge Caravan that had been reported stolen. A young woman was seen driving the car while using a cellphone, while a younger girl was also observed, Fox 11 News reported Friday. Once pulled over, the teen driver was unable to provide any license or registration for the vehicle. Upon searching the car, officers found 13 THC vape cartridges, three vape pens, a THC-laced candy themed after Nerds Rope, and numerous pieces of lingerie. Toyota, Suzuki take hybrid route in India for local, global markets
Toyota Motor Corp and Suzuki Motor Corp on Friday said they would begin production of hybrid vehicles in India, a category that Toyota has said is currently best suited to such markets. A Toyota plant in southern India would in August begin building a hybrid sport utility vehicle (SUV) developed by Suzuki, the companies said. Two power trains would be available, they said: one with a mild hybrid configuration from Suzuki and the other as a strong hybrid from Toyota. In a mild hybrid, the battery only assists the piston engine, without the all-electric mode available in a strong hybrid. Building the model is part of a broader partnership formed between the two Japanese automakers in 2017. It will be sold in India and exported to markets including Africa. Green investors have criticised Toyota, the world's largest carmaker by sales, for slowness in moving its product line-up to all-electric, battery electric vehicles (BEVs). But the company has argued that hybrids make more … [Read more...] about Toyota, Suzuki take hybrid route in India for local, global markets
Spider venom may be the new Viagra
London: Next time you spot a spider in your bedroom, don't panic, as scientists say one of their species may actually help boost a man's libido. A single bite from the Brazilian wandering spider has been shown to have side-effects including four-hour long erections. Now, researchers at the Medical College of Georgia in the US found that the toxins in the arachnid's venom contains a possible breakthrough for erectile dysfunction, the Daily Mail reported. The eight-legged creature -- also known as the armed spider, banana spider or Phoneutria nigriventer -- is found in South and Central America. Dr Kenia Nunes, a physiologist at the college, said: "The venom of the Phoneutria nigriventer spider is a very rich mixture of several molecules. "These molecules are called toxins, and then we have various toxins in this venom with different activity. "Because of this, when a human is bitten by this spider, we can observe many different symptoms including priapism (or persistent … [Read more...] about Spider venom may be the new Viagra
Florida emerges as key battleground in state-by-state abortion fight
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The U.S. Supreme Court's abortion decision is expected to make Florida an epicenter of the state-by-state fight over the issue in the coming months, raising the stakes for abortion rights advocates in the November election and complicating effortsw by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis to manage both his statewide and national political fortunes. Within hours of the court's decision, access to abortion emerged as a major fault line in America's divisive cultural battles. Thirteen conservative states with "trigger bans" will outlaw abortion within 30 days - and the procedure could soon be prohibited in several others. Lawmakers in heavily Democratic northern and western states are promising to become safe havens for women who want an abortion but are banned from receiving one at home. But in Florida, where residents in a half-dozen relatively liberal urban counties are continually locked in political duels with the conservatives who dominate much of the rest of … [Read more...] about Florida emerges as key battleground in state-by-state abortion fight

The research found that people gained more than half a stone on average, but one in five put on a stone or more. For those aged between 35 to 65, the average weight gain was more than 10lbs. Separate NHS research found that people seeking help to lose weight during the pandemic were 5lb heavier on average than those starting a health service weight loss programme in the previous three years. Five pounds might not sound like much, but it is considered “clinically significant”. Gaining even 2.2lb can increase a person’s risk of Type 2 diabetes by about 8 per cent, the NHS warns.
