More Black NFL retirees win dementia cases in rescored tests

August 12, 2022 by www.sfchronicle.com

PHILADELPHIA — Two years after a pair of former players sued the NFL over the treatment of Black retirees in the league’s $1 billion concussion settlement, hundreds of men whose medical tests were rescored to eliminate race bias now qualify for awards. The newly approved payouts, announced in a report Friday, are a victory for NFL families in the decade-long legal saga over concussions. The 2020 lawsuit unearthed the fact the dementia tests were being “race-normed” — adjusted due to assumptions that Black people have a lower cognitive baseline score. Changes to the settlement made last year are meant to make the tests race-blind. The new results will add millions to the NFL’s payouts for concussion-linked brain injuries. A league spokesman did not return a phone call Friday seeking comment on the rescoring. Of the 646 Black men whose tests were rescored, nearly half now qualify for dementia awards. Sixty-one are classified as having early to moderate dementia, with average … [Read more...] about More Black NFL retirees win dementia cases in rescored tests

Harry, Meghan security should be reinstated “before it’s too late”—author

August 12, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A prominent royal biographer has said that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle 's police protection should be restored to the couple's pre-royal retirement level when they are in Britain "before it's too late." Omid Scobie, notable for his co-authored biography of Harry and Meghan in 2020 titled Finding Freedom , has written in a new column for Yahoo! News that the decision to reduce Harry's police protection when he stepped away from his role as a full-time working member of the royal family comes across as "the Establishment punishing Harry, yet again, for breaking away from the Firm and sharing his experiences publicly." The comments come after Harry launched a second lawsuit against the U.K. government regarding his security, arguing against the decision to refuse his offer to pay for police protection when he visits his home country. The lawsuit follows the first filed in January against the initial decision made by the Home Office's Royal & VIP Executive … [Read more...] about Harry, Meghan security should be reinstated “before it’s too late”—author

Former “nuke football” handler hits out after Trump nuclear code claims

August 12, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Claims Donald Trump could have compromised America's nuclear launch codes have been rejected by one of the men who used to carry the famed ' nuclear football '. Mar-a-Lago , the former president's luxury Florida private members club, was raided by the FBI on Monday. Speaking to The Washington Post, senior officials said there were concerns Trump had kept hold of classified documents, including some related to nuclear weapons . This sparked outrage on social media, with some users worried Trump could have given away the U.S. launch codes. Tristan Snell, who previously was involved in legal action against the New York businessman over Trump University , raised the concern with his 251,000 Twitter followers. He asked : "Serious question now: Does Donald Trump have the nuclear codes at Mar-a-Lago?" However, the suggestion was rejected by Buzz Patterson, an author who served as senior military aide to President Bill Clinton between 1996 and 1998. Exclusive: Trump Raid Documents Could Reveal Intel Sources on U.S. Payroll

August 12, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

In pursuing the unprecedented search of Donald Trump 's residence on Monday, the FBI was seeking to retrieve Top Secret and "compartmented" documents dealing with intelligence "sources and methods," two federal government sources tell Newsweek— documents with the potential to reveal U.S. intelligence sources, including human sources on the American government payroll. This greatly complicates any public discussion of the documents or any substantiation of Trump's potential violation of U.S. law. The sources, who were briefed on the investigation, requested anonymity in order to discuss sensitive information. "Compartmented" is a specific term meaning "classified information concerning or derived from intelligence sources, methods, or analytical processes, which is required to be handled within formal access control systems established by the Director of National Intelligence." It includes a variety of different access categories—for example, human, intercept, satellite … [Read more...] about Exclusive: Trump Raid Documents Could Reveal Intel Sources on U.S. Payroll

Community Broadband Charts a Course for the Future

August 12, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

We have the opportunity of a lifetime. The federal government has allotted $65 billion for broadband buildouts and affordability for all. American homes and states are ready to disperse their share. With more broadband access, more people across the country will find opportunities in health, education and work, entering into local and national economies and helping to bring struggling communities back to life. By now, people know broadband will help enable the lifestyle and future hoped for. But for that to happen for everyone, everywhere and all at once, we can't wait for large providers to do it alone. The longer rural areas wait to catch up, the further back they set themselves as the rest of the world launches into the future. For broadband to benefit everyone in a way that brings more opportunity and wealth to more of society and closes the digital divide, we need community broadband to take the lead. I worked out like Kim Kardashian for a day – here’s what I thought

August 12, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

When it comes to beauty standards, Kim Kardashian arguably encapsulates the current example of the so-called 'perfect body'. Along with social media, the reality star's rise to fame could be considered to have made a significant impact on the changing landscape of women's body image, with the dramatic curves and tiny waist she's synonymous with becoming the modern-day ideal for many. Voluptuous curves while maintaining a petite waist and stomach is not something many women can achieve naturally. So, how does the reality star achieve this look? Apparently, she works out six days a week, with sessions starting at 6am lasting up to an hour and a half everyday, with lots of focus on strength training and a small amount of cardio thrown in there. She's also said to enjoy low-impact Reformer Pilates, which helps improve strength and flexibility. Based on what I could gather from social media and interviews, I tried my best to replicate something similar to Kim Kardashian's workout … [Read more...] about I worked out like Kim Kardashian for a day – here’s what I thought
