Dr. John Cheng, man killed in California church shooting, called a hero
LAGUNA WOODS, Calif. — A gunman motivated by hatred against Taiwan chained shut the doors of a California church and hid firebombs before shooting at a gathering of mostly elderly Taiwanese parishioners, killing a man who tackled him, authorities said. David Chou, 68, of Las Vegas — a U.S. citizen whom authorities say grew up in Taiwan — drove to Orange County on Saturday and the next day attended a lunch held by Irvine Taiwanese Presbyterian Church, which worships at Geneva Presbyterian Church in the community of Laguna Woods. Though he knew no one there, he spent about an hour mingling with about 40 attendees and then executed his plot, authorities said at a news conference. He chained the doors and put super glue in the keyholes. He had two 9 mm handguns — legally purchased years ago in Las Vegas — and three bags, containing among other things four Molotov-cocktail-type incendiary devices and extra ammunition. He opened fire and in the ensuing chaos Dr. John Cheng, 52, tackled … [Read more...] about Dr. John Cheng, man killed in California church shooting, called a hero
76-year-old Russian artist is proud to be voice of protest on Ukraine
Yelena Osipova barely slept ahead of Russia's pomp-filled Victory Day celebrations on May 9. The 76-year-old artist was up late, making placards to protest about the conflict in Ukraine. But the moment she stepped out of her home in Saint Petersburg on her way to demonstrate, two unknown men snatched the work from her and ran off. "It was upsetting. I'd worked half the night and really liked those placards," the white-haired painter told AFP. "It's obvious that it was an organised attack." Indefatigable as ever, within an hour, the tiny, stooped woman, who moves with difficulty, already had a new poster and was heading out again to protest. Osipova is well-known in her home town. She has been called the "conscience of Saint Petersburg," Russia's second city, after two decades spent publicly opposing the rule of President Vladimir Putin. Since the Kremlin's forces rolled into Ukraine, she has also become a symbol of Russians standing up against the conflict. Footage of … [Read more...] about 76-year-old Russian artist is proud to be voice of protest on Ukraine
Australian Shepherd becomes best buddies with cat whose owner died
The stereotypes about cats and dogs are well documented, from the popular phrase " fighting like cats and dogs ," to portrayals in cartoons and movies. But this cat and dog pair are bucking the trend. Eight-year-old shorthair cat Nikita and 5-year-old Australian Shepherd dog Bleu have been best buddies for almost five years. Wrestling, playing, and cuddling the day away together. Living with their owners Alene Husson and her husband Gerry in Indian Lake, New York, Husson told us the story of these unusual friends. "After our last Australian Shepherd died, we decided to get a cat because they're so much easier to take care of," she explained. "But we found that even though the cat was wonderful it just didn't fulfill the need for a dog. So we decided to get Bleu." The Animal Humane Society reports that: "Despite the stereotype, many dogs and cats learn to live together peacefully," they advise: "Be patient and take the introduction process slowly, but know that whether or not … [Read more...] about Australian Shepherd becomes best buddies with cat whose owner died
“Women of color lead and it’s a problem”: How Colorado’s last bill of 2022 died
The very last bill to be voted on in Colorado’s 2022 legislative session was designed to make sure the state never lets another child experience what Lorenzo Montoyawent through. Montoya was 14 years old in 2000 when he was taken into questioning by Denver police detectives who suspected him in the killing of a Skinner Middle School teacher named Emily Johnson. He didn’t kill her . Again and again, that’s what he told detectives. But over a period of hours, first with Montoya’s mom present and later alone with the child, the police planted a narrative in the child’s mind. They claimed they’d already retrieved fingerprints, shoe prints and hair samples to back it up. Confused and under enormous pressure, Montoya relented and gave a coerced confession. He was convicted of murder and spent the rest of his childhood and most of his 20s incarcerated, before being exonerated in 2014. It is legal in Colorado and all states but Oregon, Illinois and Utah for police to lie to … [Read more...] about “Women of color lead and it’s a problem”: How Colorado’s last bill of 2022 died
Florida woman confesses to killing man she lived with for 14 years: Police
A Florida woman was arrested and charged on Monday after confessing to brutally killing an elderly man, one she had lived with for 14 years. Clio Maria Trice, 50, of Miami Gardens revealed her actions to a neighbor, according to a police report obtained by NBC Miami on Tuesday. Within the confession, she explained that she had struck the man, 81, and then began strangling him. Once he was dead, she buried him in the backyard of her home. This comes as Democratic and Republicans voters agree that the rise in crime is a "massive" problem in the U.S. After hearing this grisly story, the neighbor reported it to the Miami Gardens Police Department, who arrived to execute a search warrant on Trice's home at around 5 p.m. The department confirmed that investigators found the body of the elderly man buried in a shallow grave in the woman's backyard. The body was situated beneath a plank of wood and the grave appeared to be freshly covered. Following the discovery, Trice was … [Read more...] about Florida woman confesses to killing man she lived with for 14 years: Police

A player of 60s vintage who showed us what 2020s might be like
It is impossible to be objective about death. If it involves an accident that ends a sportsman’s life prematurely, you think about his family; then you ask, did he live up to potential? That question can seldom be answered in the positive, for it is human nature to believe that the next event will be the determining one, the next assignment will establish the legacy. Those who play sport at the highest level are judged by performance and not on potential. Once a career is over, there is no room for could-have-beens. Whatever problems the late Shane Warne had outside the sport, he will always count as one of the all-time greats, his 708 Test wickets testimony to that. Did he live up to potential? It doesn’t matter. What we know is good enough to guarantee him a place among the finest. Andrew Symonds was a cricketer of 1960s vintage who played in the 2000s and showed us what the 2020s might be like. He was a throwback to an age where the sport wasn’t an all-consuming task-master, … [Read more...] about A player of 60s vintage who showed us what 2020s might be like
