Rio Tinto, Nespresso join forces to make coffee pods greener

By Barbara Lewis and Martinne GellerLONDON (Reuters) - Nespresso, part of food giant Nestle <NESN.S>, aims to use sustainable aluminium in all of its coffee capsules by 2020 under a deal with mining major Rio Tinto <RIO.L> <RIO.AX> announced on Monday.gi Both companies have faced criticism for adding to pressure on the planet, with campaigners saying Nespresso coffee machines are wasteful and many of the used capsules end up in landfill. YuMi is the luxury department store’s first robot, which will serve customers with coffee in its future lounge area – and will not get worn out like normal baristas. “For us it’s all about amazing and amusing our customers, and I think we want to present things that people have never seen before,” said Jacov Nachtailer, founder of Smartech. He teased that Smartech could involve more robots and even holographic displays in the future. Hong Kong-based company Cafelat has launched its Cafelat Robot, a manual coffee maker that gives its users a high-quality espresso with just ground coffee and hot water. The robot, first created in 2015, is designed to work with freshly ground coffee or supermarket ground coffee, eliminating the need for plastic coffee capsules. Similar to the mechanics of a professional coffee machine, the Cafelat Robot works with just hot water and ground coffee, which is turned into a biodegradable “coffee puck” after use.
