The midday sun is blazing down on the car park next to the picturesque harbour at Wells-Next-The-Sea… and on a line of dismayed pensioners standing in front of the pay station. Most of them have arrived with coins ready to pay, but a sign says it’s £6 for two hours by cash, but £1 an hour and £4 all day if they pay online. “I think it’s just wrong,” says a flustered Diane Burton, who is holding a fistful of pound coins. “I’m 75, I don’t know how to do that. “Most older people have mobile phones , but only for making calls, not for paying for things or anything else. They’re making us pay more to park here just because we belong to a different generation.” Diane and Stanley Burton ( Image: Albanpix.com,) Her husband, 79-year-old Stanley, agrees: “We didn’t have computers when I was at school, just slates and beads. I’m completely computer illiterate. “It seems like they’re making it harder for older people, when they really should be trying to make our lives … [Read more...] about Pensioners forced to pay more for parking as they can’t use technology to book online

Why are right-wingers so afraid of modern art?
Art is a weird industry. It’s one of the few disciplines where people become absolutely incensed at the implication that they might not know everything about it, even when they have no real interest in it. People will claim that a particular piece of art is pointless, or pretentious, or stupid, with all the confidence of somebody walking up to an orthopaedic surgeon and telling them that it’s idiotic that there are so many different names for bones. “Hand bones, leg bones, what’s the difference?” they cry. “Bones are just sticks that keep our meat from sloshing around. Why do you eggheads always have to make everything so complicated?” Nothing riles people up more than modern art, and nobody gets more riled up about modern art than conservatives. It feels like every few weeks some right-wing influencer will have a hot take about some piece of abstract expressionism or a readymade sculpture, declaring that they’ve figured it out, they’ve cracked the code. Modern art is a … [Read more...] about Why are right-wingers so afraid of modern art?

North Caroline Is a Warning
T he ad that signaled the coming catastrophe for democracy in North Carolina appeared just four days before the November 2012 election. As the ad opened, a woman’s voice wondered aloud whether voters “can trust Sam Ervin IV to be a fair judge.” Ervin, captured in black and white, looks shifty, moving his eyes back and forth before turning his head suddenly as if he is on the run. Ervin and his family, the ad announced, had donated to the campaign of the former Democratic governor, and later convicted felon, Mike Easley. The camera lingers on Ervin’s face as the ad explains that he went on to get a $100,000 state job; the portrait could be mistaken for a mug shot, were it not for his suit and tie. One might have assumed that Ervin was running for high federal office, given the seriousness and slickness of the ad—and the fact that the group responsible for it was largely funded by a national Republican PAC. But no, Ervin was running for one seat of seven on the state supreme court. … [Read more...] about North Caroline Is a Warning

Dear Mum, I love you, but I hope you never read this
You can’t say anything these days!”, my mother says, with a knowing look, at the end of an anecdote. I smile and nod along politely while, inside, my brain chokes in a fog of cognitive dissonance. I come up with nothing of substance with which to reply to her and she continues unabated, “It’s sad when you think back to Monty Python , you know? And do you remember Matt Lucas , he used to do that sketch show? Now he can’t. He won’t even go on TV.” As I nod along, I wonder how deep this particular culture war untruth goes and how on earth one might go about changing her mind. I have plenty of combative things to say about the “ you can’t say anything these days ” narrative, but what do I say to her ? She is kind, so, so, kind. She’s intelligent, likeable, reliable, selfless, and well, I love her. She’s my mum. Do I nod my head and let it slide like always, or do I risk our relationship by trying to talk her around? Maybe all she needs to convince her is a sobering … [Read more...] about Dear Mum, I love you, but I hope you never read this
Keeler: USC, UCLA bailed. Pac-12 promises were lies. CU Buffs have to ask themselves this: Who do we want to be as a football program?
You’re on your own now, CU. Conferences? Conferences don’t matter. Contracts don’t matter. Tradition doesn’t matter. Geography? More than 1,500 gorgeous miles sit between Memorial Stadium in Lincoln and Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles. Geography is so 2010. The only thing that matters is television. And whether a network armed with billions wants your football team featured on theirs. “I do know this, though — that just sitting around thinking what could have been or looking longingly into the past is not going to help (the Buffs) in their current state,” former CU quarterback and current FOX Sports analyst Joel Klatt said by phone. “They’re going to have to work really hard to map out and carve out a future that will allow them to return to a prominent place within the spot which we all know that they can get to.” The Pac-12 was a Ponzi scheme, with former commissioner Larry Scott its Bernie Madoff . CU chancellor Phil DiStefano got his university duped, for too … [Read more...] about Keeler: USC, UCLA bailed. Pac-12 promises were lies. Op-Ed: How Chief Justice John Roberts laid the groundwork for the Trump court
During his 17-year tenure as chief justice, John G. Roberts Jr. has sought to project an image of the consummate institutionalist — a right-of-center beacon of integrity championing the Supreme Court’s role as an impartial arbiter of the law. It must be a painful irony, then, that the legacy of the Roberts court will surely be that of a diminished judicial branch : the court’s composition politically manipulated, its deliberations compromised by an unprecedented leak, its membership riven by the same unbridgeable partisan divisions as the country at large and its public reputation at a nadir. Laying all this at the feet of the presiding chief justice is not entirely fair. Despite common perception, the chief justice is merely a “first among equals” with scant power to bend the institution to his or her will. The chief does preside over the court’s post-argument conference where tentative votes are taken. When in the majority (but only then), the chief also gets to choose the author … [Read more...] about Op-Ed: How Chief Justice John Roberts laid the groundwork for the Trump court
