What kids are watching in 2022
My 12-year-old daughter loves to go down the YouTube rabbit hole in pursuit of shows, cartoons or videos that pique her interest. I monitor her content, of course, and pull the brakes or guide her whenever necessary. Like many families in urban India, we do not watch linear television and we do not have a cable connection. Instead, we use OTT streaming services — Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar and Amazon Prime. YouTube is a favourite too and the explosive appeal of these platforms among children has led to more diverse and interesting content. ALSO READ: Vikramaditya Motwane on India’s ‘one size fits all’ model of entertainment This year, Turning Red on Disney+ Hotstar is a step forward in terms of representation. The movie is about a Canadian Chinese girl who turns into a giant red panda every time she is stressed or excited. Children like my daughter see themselves in Priya Mangal, who is one of Mei’s best friends in the movie and is voiced by actor Maitreyi Ramakrishnan. “Kids really still are not doing well”: Colorado teens feel pressure of perfection post-pandemic isolation
Ariane Herrera Cardenas has always placed high expectations on herself, even in middle school, and the stakes have only increased as she prepares to graduate from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Early College in about two weeks. In the fall, the 18-year-old will become the first in her family to go to college and the burden to succeed is weighing on her. As a senior Ariane decided she needed to save money for college so she started working part-time at Home Depot. “The decisions I have to make right now are important for me to set an example for my siblings,” she said. She is not alone in her worries about the future. Colorado teens have faced heightened pressure to succeed academically and in extracurricular activities, such as sports, for more than a decade. Now, they’re coming of age as the United States emerges from the worst pandemic in a century and are feeling that pressure even more than before, according to teenagers and mental health experts. Teens told The Denver … [Read more...] about “Kids really still are not doing well”: Colorado teens feel pressure of perfection post-pandemic isolation
Abortion resistance braces for demands of a post-Roe future
The day’s first caller begged for help to cross state lines and end her pregnancy. “Please,” the woman from Texas said in her voicemail. “Anything would be greatly appreciated.” Three states away, in southern Illinois , Alison Dreith heard the plea and grinded a toothpick between her teeth. She’d started chewing them last year as a stress reliever the day Texas all but banned abortions. Now the stick darted across her mouth, left to right, right to left. She felt shaky. “It’s starting,” said Dreith. “What we’ve been worrying about for years.” When desperate people can’t obtain abortions near home -- when they need plane tickets, bus fare, babysitters -- they reach out to groups like Dreith’s, the Midwest Access Coalition. The demand has become staggering. Now, for the first time, she would have to tell a caller “No.” The U.S. Supreme Court this summer is expected to gut Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that made abortion a constitutional right. But already, state … [Read more...] about Abortion resistance braces for demands of a post-Roe future
SMUGGLER’S PARADISE: How American Teenagers Are Being Lured Into Human Trafficking On Social Media
A mother detailed how her son fell victim to a border human smuggling operation in an exclusive interview with The Daily Caller News Foundation. Dora Ortega’s son was lured on Snapchat and was paid thousands of dollars to smuggle migrants into Arizona. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) for the Douglas, Arizona, office Rae Reed told TheDCNF that the agency is “dealing with unprecedented numbers of human smuggling activity.” Dora Ortega knew her teenage son was hiding something when he arrived home at 2 a.m. He was wearing expensive new clothes that she knew he couldn’t afford with his warehouse job. But it wasn’t until Ortega’s son finally admitted what he’d really been up to that she realized the gravity of the situation. Ortega’s son, who was 19 at the time, had been picking up migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border and smuggling them into Arizona, she told The Daily Caller News Foundation. “They’re gonna be caught and then … [Read more...] about SMUGGLER’S PARADISE: How American Teenagers Are Being Lured Into Human Trafficking On Social Media
Flood of pilgrims swamps Char Dham
On a cool afternoon in May, vehicles are lined up bumper to bumper as far as the eye can see on the Rishikesh-Kedarnath highway in Phata, a small town in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district. The convoy of vehicles is ferrying thousands of devotees who have descended on the hill State for the Char Dham Yatra — an annual pilgrimage to four Hindu shrines: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath — which has resumed on a full scale this year after being a low-key affair for the last two years owing to COVID-19 restrictions. The pilgrimage, considered one of the most sacred by the followers of Hinduism, is a journey to the abodes of four deities: Yamunotri (goddess Yamuna) and Gangotri (goddess Ganga) in Uttarkashi district; Kedarnath (Lord Shiva) in Rudraprayag district; and Badrinath (Lord Vishnu) in Chamoli district. Devotees visit the Gangotri Dham temple that was opened on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, in Gangotri, on May 3, 2022. | Photo Credit: PTI Nestled in the … [Read more...] about Flood of pilgrims swamps Char Dham

Wadhams: What for the students who sacrificed to graduate debt free?
Of all the failed policies of President Joe Biden and his Democratic Socialist enablers, allowing people to walk away from their student loan debts is perhaps the most disturbing. The irresponsible fiscal policies pushed by elected Democrats have given us historically high inflation that punishes hardworking families with dramatically increasing prices on gasoline and groceries. Their coddling of criminals has resulted in explosive crime across the nation. Their open borders policy has created a human tragedy and threatens our national security. But none of these glaring failures are as fundamentally offensive, irresponsible and insulting to taxpayers as the Biden-Democratic Socialist proposal to cancel student debts. This is a terribly personal issue for me and for millions of Americans who worked their way through college without going into debt or who have dutifully paid off or are paying off their student loan debt. Why should hundreds of millions of Americans who did not go … [Read more...] about Wadhams: What for the students who sacrificed to graduate debt free?
