Indirect negotiations between Iran and the U.S. over Tehran's tattered nuclear deal with world powers ended on Wednesday in Qatar after failing to make significant progress amid a growing crisis over the Islamic Republic's atomic program, diplomats said. The Doha talks broke up after two days without any sign of a breakthrough, months after talks in Vienna among all of the deal's parties went on “pause." In the time since, Iran shut off surveillance cameras of international inspectors and now has enough high-enriched uranium to potentially fashion into at least one nuclear bomb if it chose. And with Iran and the U.S. blaming each other for the talks' failure, it remains unclear when — or if — there will be another round of negotiations. Also Read Iran says to hold indirect talks with U.S. on nuclear sanctions European Union mediator Enrique Mora on Twitter described as “intense” the two days of talks in Doha. Matt Fitzpatrick helped force brother to make rebel Saudi tour U-turn before US Open win
Recently crowned US Open champion Matthew Fitzpatrick helped younger brother Alex turn down a deal to link up with the controversial Saudi-backed Golf series that began earlier this month. The circuit - known as the LIV Golf Invitational Series - has sent shockwaves around the world of golf, attracting some of the sport’s biggest stars with mega-money deals, and huge financial prizes. As well as golf’s most renowned names - including Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson - circuit organisers, led by ex-world No. 1 Greg Norman also looked to poach some of the planet's hottest amateur players, which included Fitzpatrick. As an amateur, the chance to turn professional and compete for a £20 million prize pot each event is no doubt a tough offer to turn down. Alex though took the decision not to sign up - with the help of big brother Matt. Per Sportsmail he said: “Matt helped me make the decision along with my parents and his incredible victory emphasised to me that I made the … [Read more...] about Matt Fitzpatrick helped force brother to make rebel Saudi tour U-turn before US Open win
Anthony Joshua believes winning Oleksandr Usyk rematch will make him “boxing legend”
Anthony Joshua feels that winning his rematch with Oleksandr Usyk this summer will cement his position as a legend in boxing. The two-time world heavyweight champion has already climbed the mountain top in his sport twice, and has beaten the likes of Wladimir Klitschko, Joseph Parker and Dillian Whyte during his career. He is also an Olympic gold medalist, but fans have questioned his legacy after losses to Usyk and Andy Ruiz Jr in recent years. Now, he has a chance to defeat one of the sport's pound-for-pound greats in Usyk, who was a legendary undisputed cruiserweight champion before moving up. The pair went the distance back in September, but Joshua was comfortably beaten in front of over 60,000 fans at Tottenham Hotspur stadium. He immediately exercised his rematch clause, and will get another chance to fight for the belts on August 20 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The Brit will make a massive money purse for the fight, and believes it will cement his legacy. “I feel when … [Read more...] about Anthony Joshua believes winning Oleksandr Usyk rematch will make him “boxing legend”
Tommy Fury makes vow to “permanently shut up” Jake Paul after signing for fight
Jake Paul has been told that he will be "permanently shut up" after he takes a major step up to face Tommy Fury . The YouTuber-turned-boxer has become one of the most polarising and divisive fighters in combat sports since turning professional in 2020. He's 5-0 since his debut, having knocked out all four of his opponents, but has been often criticised for facing non-boxers, with none of his opponents having had a boxing match before facing him. So he will face a massive jump in competition when he faces the 8-0 Fury, who is the younger brother of world heavyweight champion Tyson. The pair have had a long-running rivalry dating back to the start of last year, and after their December date was cancelled, they have rescheduled for August 6 in New York. “The Paul brothers’ boxing charade is about to come to an end once and for all,” Fury said in a press release ahead of the fight, also mocking Jake's older brother Logan. “I am a boxer. My opponent plays boxing. " Jake Paul has … [Read more...] about Tommy Fury makes vow to “permanently shut up” Jake Paul after signing for fight
Australia and France make ‘new start’ after submarine row
Australia and France opened a “new chapter” in their relations Friday as the new Australian Prime Minister seeks to heal wounds from a secret submarine contract that infuriated France. President Emmanuel Macron warmly shook hands with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese outside the French presidential palace, showing a thumbs-up before putting his arm around the Australian leader's back as they headed inside for talks. “Trust, respect and honesty matters,” Mr. Albanese told reporters. “This is how I will approach my relations” with France. Paris responded with fury when the previous Australian government announced in September that it was cancelling a 90 billion Australian dollar ($62 billion) contract for French-made diesel-electric submarines. Instead, Australia had struck a deal with the United States and Britain to provide submarines powered with US nuclear technology, which French leaders said was sealed behind their backs. France temporarily withdrew its … [Read more...] about Australia and France make ‘new start’ after submarine row
Matt Fitzpatrick sets target after US Open win and makes Sheffield United comparison
Maiden major-winner Matt Fitzpatrick wants to follow in the footsteps of Nick Faldo after storming to success in the U.S. Open on Sunday. In a win many fans may feel was a long time coming, the Yorkshire man finished one shot clear of Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. That leaves Fitzpatrick five majors short of Faldo, the most successful British player of the modern era after clinching each of the Masters and The Open on three occasions. "Six is the number," Fitzpatrick told reporters following the biggest day of his career to date. "That's the number that we all agreed on. I've got a bit of a way to go, but it's a good start. You want to go win more now, there's no doubt about that. It's easy to still go off track. I've just got to keep doing what I'm doing, and hopefully more will come. I'm delighted with one so far." Considering he only turned professional in 2014, the 27-year-old has time on his side as he … [Read more...] about Matt Fitzpatrick sets target after US Open win and makes Sheffield United comparison
BMRCL loss dips from ₹912 crore to ₹477 crore
With the metro services running during most of the last financial year, the loss incurred by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has dropped from ₹912 crore in 2020-21 to ₹477 crore in 2021-22. Multiple restrictions because of the pandemic had led the BMRCL to suspend services for most of 2020-21 and the entire financial year, the fare box revenue was only ₹73.56 crore. However, with the restoration of services in the next year, the revenue jumped to ₹193 crore. BMRCL Managing Director Anjum Parwez said, “In 2020-21, after the outbreak of the pandemic, there was no service for most of the year. But last year, we managed to run services resulting in increased revenue. Another factor that curtailed the losses was the change in the valuation of depreciation cost. Metros like the one in Delhi consider the life span of viaduct up to 60 years whereas we were considering it only for 30 years. That has changed now.” As per the balance sheet of the BMRCL, depreciation and … [Read more...] about BMRCL loss dips from ₹912 crore to ₹477 crore
From AM to PM, the fickle force of government is with you
When you groggily roll out of bed and make breakfast, the government edges up to your kitchen table, too. Unlike you, it's perky. It's an unseen force in your morning. The government makes sure you can see the nutrients in your cereal. It fusses over your toast, insisting that the flour it comes from has no more than 75 insect fragments and one rodent hair per 50 grams. The government also tends to your coffee, mandating that no more than 10% of your beans be moldy. Its satellites inform the weather forecast on your phone for the day ahead. The government weighs in on the water consumption in your bathroom and controls the fluoride in your toothpaste. That’s all before you leave home. The government is going to be hanging with you on and off, mostly on, until you turn off the lamp last thing at night — no new incandescent bulbs, please, under a new rule. The world of federal regulation seems both boundless and microscopic. It touches what you touch. It lends a helping … [Read more...] about From AM to PM, the fickle force of government is with you
Pride in London – live: March gets underway as thousands celebrate in the capital
Pride in London has returned to the capital for the first time since 2019, celebrating 50 years since the very first march took place in 1972. More than one million people are expected to descend on the capital for the parade, which begins from 12pm on Saturday (2 July). According to the organisers, 30,000 people have registered to join the march from more than 600 LGBT+ community groups. The parade is an “opportunity for expression of celebration, joy and triumph but also the voice to rightly express the continued fight for those injustices and inequalities that exist among us,” Pride in London said. Those marching today will be calling on the UK government to ban conversion therapy for all LGBT+ people, reform the Gender Recognition Act, and provide equal protection for LGBT+ communities against hate crime. Why do writers and filmmakers keep using lazy science?
Halfway through the second episode of The Midwich Cuckoos I found myself wishing I didn’t have a science degree. For those unfamiliar with Sky ’s show, the source novel by John Wyndham, or one of the pair of movie adaptations, after the village of Midwich mysteriously falls asleep for a day, all the women of childbearing age suddenly find themselves to be pregnant. The resulting children have some disturbing features and abilities. They are the cuckoos of the title. The Sky adaptation seeks a female perspective to the story, which is very much in its favour. It’s mostly the men whom we see trying to deal with the problems presented by the cuckoos in the book, which is perhaps its biggest flaw given they’re not the ones who have to deal with being used as human reed warblers (a favoured cuckoo host in Britain). But modernising it clearly presented the makers with some challenges. Abortion is legal today . It wasn’t in 1957 when the book was published. And then … [Read more...] about Why do writers and filmmakers keep using lazy science?
