The city of Savannah, Georgia, has its eyes out for a vandal who put "googly eyes" on a statue of Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene in a prank that has Facebook users rolling with laughter. The city government posted a call for answers to Facebook on Thursday, including photos showing the Greene statue with the expressive eyes. "Who did this?! Someone placed googly eyes on our historic #NathanaelGreene statue in #JohnsonSquare," the post said. "It may look funny but harming our historic monuments and public property is no laughing matter, in fact, it's a crime." The city urged anyone with information to contact the Savannah Police Department. The department has made no arrests and identified no suspects, spokeswoman Keturah Greene — no relation — told CBS News. But the city is already seeing plenty of gags about the googly eyes. Since the Facebook post on Thursday, dozens of users have been posting other googly eyes photos in comments on the city's page. … [Read more...] about Statue of Revolutionary War general vandalized with “googly eyes”

Holocaust survivor who became US Army major general has died
A man who survived the holocaust as a child, fought in Vietnam and went on to serve as a major general in the U.S. Army has died. Sidney Shachnow's wife said by phone Wednesday that he passed away Sept. 27 at a hospital in Pinehurst, North Carolina. He was 83. Shachnow endured the horrors of Nazi-controlled Europe. He then spent more than 30 years as a Green Beret in the U.S. Army Special Forces. His life came full circle when he commanded American forces in West Berlin during the Cold War. He said he lived in a house that was once owned by Hitler's finance minister. Shachnow was 6 or 7 years old when the Nazis forced Lithuanian Jews into a concentration camp. Oklahoma House green lights cap on speeding ticket costs
OKLAHOMA CITY — Legislation to curb the cost of speeding tickets rolled through the Oklahoma House of Representatives without dissent on Monday despite some concern about what it could cost state and local courts and law enforcement agencies.Senate Bill 1203 would cut the fine for speeding 1 to 10 mph above the limit in half, to $5, and limit additional fees and court costs to no more than $95.The fines and fees for such a ticket are now $224.50.A staff fiscal analysis estimated SB 1203 would cost the various offices and agencies getting a cut of that at least $2.6 million a year.Mindful of that, the House amended SB 1203 so that it wouldn't take effect until Nov. 1, 2022.Some observers, though, argue revenue might actually go up because state troopers would be more inclined to write tickets if the cost of them is lowered. Ticket revenue has declined in recent years because fewer have been written, and some think it's because troopers are hesitant to levy such a severe cost for a … [Read more...] about Oklahoma House green lights cap on speeding ticket costs
