The death toll in rain-related incidents in Maharashtra rose to 164 on Monday after the recovery of 11 more bodies, while some places in north India received heavy showers which inundated low-lying areas. Gujarat also witnessed incessant rainfall that led to water-logging and damage at various places due to which 56 roads in the state were closed for vehicular movement. The IMD has issued an orange alert predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in Madhya Pradesh. Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 33.1 degrees Celsius on Monday. The national capital is expected to receive moderate rain during the day on Tuesday, while the maximum and minimum temperature may settle around 30 and 27 degrees Celsius, respectively. Maharashtra on Thursday recorded 3,640 fresh coronavirus cases and three fatalities linked to the infection, the state health department said. With these additions, the state's overall Covid-19 tally rose to 79,76,114, while the death toll increased to 1,47,925, said the department in a bulletin. On Wednesday, the state had recorded 3,957 cases and seven deaths. Mumbai recorded 1,265 cases and one fatality. One death each was registered in Ahmednagar city and Kolhapur district, the bulletin said. The state's case fatality rate stood at 1.85 per cent. Also, 4,432 patients recovered from the infection in the last 24 hours, taking their cumulative count to 78,03,249 and leaving the state with 24,940 active cases, the department said. The coronavirus recovery rate in the state stood at 97.83 per cent, it said. As many as 42,397 coronavirus tests were conducted in the last 24 hours, taking their total tally in the state to 8,20,01,686, the bulletin said. INDIAN RAILWAYS UPDATE: Indian Railways has decided to cancel 181 trains today on June 30 due to due to maintenance and operational reasons. It has also decided to change sourced station in 25 trains and short terminate 24 on Thursday. Among those cancelled includes the South East Central Railway’s 18 trains that pass through Chhattisgarh. Railways have put up a list of fully and partially cancelled trains on its website for the passengers’ convenience. Amid ongoing political turmoil in Maharashtra caused by a rebellion in the Shiv Sena, Mumbai police on Thursday beefed up security at the party headquarters Shiv Sena Bhavan and Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's private residence `Matoshree' here. City police commissioner Sanjay Pandey met CM Thackeray at Matoshree to discuss the law and order situation, said an official. With senior Sena leader Eknath Shinde and at least 37 party MLAs rebelling against the party leadership, there is a possibility of violent reaction among Sena supporters in the city, the police official said. As Mumbai is a Shiv Sena bastion and also the nerve center of political developments in the state, police are taking precautions to avoid any untoward incidents on the streets, he said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a virtual meeting on Tuesday, warned the chief ministers of eight states and union territories against letting their guards down in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. He called for reducing the positivity and fatality rates by focusing on curbing the virus transmission. Even as he underlined that India’s COVID-19 situation is more stable than other countries in terms of recovery and fatality rates, the prime minister called for more RT-PCR tests. Maharashtra BJP leader Girish Mahajan on Thursday claimed that his party has the support of 170 MLAs, way above the 145 majority mark in the 288-member House that is necessary to form a government in the state. At least 18 trains have been cancelled and four others short-terminated due to the ongoing work on the third line between the Rajnandgaon-Kalmana (Nagpur) rail section of the South East Central Railway Division. According to the information received from the Railways, auto signalling and non-interlocking work is being carried out. This work will be done between June 29 and July 1. Therefore, South East Central Railway has decided to cancel 18 trains passing through Chhattisgarh. These trains will remain cancelled from June 28 to July 2. Apart from this, four trains will be terminated before their destination. Equity indices took a knock for the second straight session on Monday as lacklustre macroeconomic data and a rising trend in COVID-19 cases dented risk appetite. A sharp jump in the rupee was not enough to shore up sentiment, traders said. After gyrating 1,035.71 points during the day, the 30-share BSE Sensex ended 397 points or 0.78 per cent lower at 50,395.08. The broader NSE Nifty slumped 101.45 points or 0.67 per cent to close at 14,929.50. Banking and finance stocks bore the brunt of the losses, while the IT pack buckled the trend. Bajaj Finserv was the top loser among the Sensex constituents, shedding 2.68 per cent, followed by Bajaj Auto, Bajaj Finance, L&T, Asian Paints, Dr Reddy's, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and Reliance Industries.
