Republican Congressman Madison Cawthorn faces a tough test in the North Carolina Primary on Tuesday, after a series of controversies and antics that have threatened his chances of getting re-elected. Even Donald Trump has said he deserves a "second chance." But Cawthorn's donors haven't been deterred. Cawthorn's fundraising committee, Cawthorn for NC, saw a small decline in campaign contibutions in April. It received 827 donations in the month, according to Federal Election Commission filings, down from 1,252 in March, but that's in line with the flow of overall electoral donations nationally. Cawthorn for NC raised just under $66,000 in April, down from $103,000 in March. His highest fundraising month was $251,000 in June 2021. Equally, Cawthorn's Republican challengers who have raised the most in donations, Bruce O'Connell and Chuck Edwards, didn't see any major donation boosts to their campaigns in April, after Cawthorn's controversies, according to FEC data. … [Read more...] about Madison Cawthorn’s scandals haven’t put off his donors

Prince William’s best friend frisked by police ‘after hawk found in trap’ on his land
Prince William ’s best pal was frisked in his pyjamas by police after a hawk was reported trapped on his land. Officers raided the estate of William van Cutsem, who is Prince George ’s godfather. It comes after activists from the Hunt Investigation Team said they found two illegal hawk traps baited with pigeons and a goshawk caught in one. They claimed to have filmed a masked person removing the protected bird on Mr van Cutsem’s Hilborough estate near Sandringham, Norfolk. A spokesman said: “It was not immediately released – something a legal operator would do. “It is presumed dead. Gamekeepers see raptors as a threat to shooting stocks.” A goshawk was found trapped on his land ( Image: Getty Images) The recording was passed to Norfolk Police, whose officers found a trap set with a live pigeon. Two men were then searched and four live pigeons, one dead pigeon and a police-style baton were seized, among other items. A newspaper reported that Mr van Cutsem … [Read more...] about Prince William’s best friend frisked by police ‘after hawk found in trap’ on his land
Think Liverpool fans were wrong to boo Prince William? Read this first
If, like me, you watched the football on Saturday – and saw Chelsea lose to Liverpool on penalties (6-5, after a 0-0 draw) – you might have noticed the crowd booing Prince William as he presented the winning side with the hallowed FA Cup. They also jeered during a rendition of the national anthem and the hymn “Abide With Me”. Were you surprised? Shocked? Disappointed? If you were, you weren’t alone – some fans (of the royal family, that is) have since expressed their disapproval on social media, including certain politicians. Conservative MP and former culture secretary Karen Bradley, for example, described the situation as “unacceptable and disgraceful”. “I would urge the Football Association (FA) to take all the necessary action, and pursue those responsible,” she told the Daily Mail; while the speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle , said he “utterly condemns” the booing. “The FA Cup final should be an occasion when we come together as a country. This is the Republican Senator determined to bury Madison Cawthorn
Thom Tillis is not someone who particularly riles up voters on either side of the aisle. When the North Carolina Senator spoke at a Republican rally in Fayetteville 2019, he was met with boos for being insufficiently conservative. Conversely, while his 2014 race against incumbent Democratic Senator Kay Hagan was the most expensive race in history at the time, his Democratic opponent Cal Cunningham raised far less than Amy McGrath or Jamie Harrison in their 2020 suicide missions against Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham. This, despite the fact that by all usual metrics Cunningham had a better chance of beating Tillis (whether Cunningham’s farcical sex scandal cost him the race is a question for debate). Nevertheless, Tillis squeaked out a victory both times, and is now set to become North Carolina’s senior Senator when Richard Burr retires at the end of this year. These days, it appears Tillis is mostly known for using his entire operation to end the career … [Read more...] about This is the Republican Senator determined to bury Madison Cawthorn
Republicans are hellbent on kicking Madison Cawthorn out for good
In 1965, when Lyndon Johnson was grappling with whether to fire J. Edgar Hoover as the head of the FBI , he said: “Well, it’s probably better to have him inside the tent pissing out, than outside pissing in.” In the case of the beleaguered freshman Republican Representative Madison Cawthorn , Republicans are putting the squeeze on him for being inside the tent and still pissing inside it. On Thursday evening, the Daily Mail published screenshots of a video of Representative Madison Cawthorn with his staffer Stephen Smith putting his hand on the congressman’s crotch. Cawthorn’s communications director initially said he could not give any response until he saw the video, but offered up an even more damning detail: Cawthorn and Smith are apparently cousins, which could mean that the congressman had violated a federal statute that says public officials cannot employ their own relatives. As observers might remember, Cawthorn’s latest troubles began in earnest last month … [Read more...] about Republicans are hellbent on kicking Madison Cawthorn out for good
It’s easy to feel Madison Cawthorn schadenfreude — but he’s right to call those video leaks blackmail
It’s hard to feel bad for someone like Congressman Madison Cawthorn, but the Republican Congressman is right to describe the recent release of a nude video starring him as “blackmail.” In the clip, the North Carolina Republican House member is naked in bed and making thrusting motions on top of another man. Given it comes mere weeks after Politico published photos of Cawthorn posing in lingerie while drinking from a wine glass at a party, it’s easy to guess what each release seeks to intimate about the 26-year-old Congressman. Cawthorn’s response to that particular incident was to merely dismiss it as an “attack from the left” on Twitter and to invite others to post their “most embarrassing vacation photos.” He pumped his chest a bit more when responding to the latest headlines. “Years ago, in this video, I was being crass with a friend, trying to be funny,” the 26-year-old Congressman tweeted after the video clip was released. “We were acting foolish, and joking. That’s it.” … [Read more...] about It’s easy to feel Madison Cawthorn schadenfreude — but he’s right to call those video leaks blackmail
Alito says overturning Roe gives women a voice on abortion. In the South, it’s not that simple.
In his leaked draft Supreme Court opinion, Justice Samuel Alito argues that overturning Roe v. Wade would allow “women on both sides of the abortion issue to seek to affect the legislative process.” If women in a post-Roe era don’t like state laws that restrict abortion access, or laws that preserve the right to have an abortion, Alito envisions a world in which they can step up and change them. Women can vote, he pointed out, and often do so in higher numbers than men. They can lobby and run for office. But advocates for voting access and civil rights say that Alito’s depiction does not account for the parts of the country, particularly in the South, where laws make it harder for the poor and voters of color to cast their ballots, and where racially polarized voting can make it more difficult for abortion rights candidates to gain ground. How states will proceed if Roe v. Wade is overturned May 3, 2022 02:35 Southern states … [Read more...] about Alito says overturning Roe gives women a voice on abortion. David Cameron book release date confirmed – and it’s before the Brexit deadline
David Cameron's memoir will finally be released in September - a month before the deadline for Britain to leave the EU. Publishers Harper Collins have confirmed the book's title will be "For the Record", and it will be released on September 19. And for those who dream about having the former Prime Minister's words whispered directly into their ears, an audiobook version of the tome will be released on the same day. Mr Cameron, who promised the EU referendum as part of the Tory manifesto in 2015, is understood to have privately promised Theresa May he would not publish the memoir until after Britain had left the European Union so as "not to rock the boat". In a tweet, Harper Collins said: "We are pleased to announce that William Collins – an imprint of HarperCollins UK – will publish former Prime Minister David Cameron’s autobiography this autumn. "FOR THE RECORD will be released on Thursday 19th September, in hardback, ebook and audio." Preview manuscripts have been … [Read more...] about David Cameron book release date confirmed – and it’s before the Brexit deadline
The tantalizing possibilities of the Knicks’ best-case lottery scenario
It’s always dangerous to get conclusive about a draft class before the picks are called, let alone before the players step on the court, but the preliminary consensus among scouts and experts is that 2022 is top heavy. Specifically, there are four players that sit as the cream. So for the Knicks, who enter the draft lottery at No. 11, the drawing of Ping Pong balls Tuesday night in Chicago is consequential. Potentially franchise altering. There is a decent enough chance for them to crack the top-4 (9.4%) to pay attention, and the reaction of the always demonstrative William Wesley, who is sitting for the Knicks on the dais , will be worth a view regardless of the outcome. And if the Knicks’ lottery luck changes and the franchise moves up in the lottery for the first time since 1985, here’s a breakdown of the four prospective rewards (we’re ignoring that the team could also use such a lucrative pick to trade for a star. Ahem, Donovan Mitchell): JABARI SMITH JR. AGE: … [Read more...] about The tantalizing possibilities of the Knicks’ best-case lottery scenario
