Nasa is heading to Mars after launching a rocket from Earth today . The space agency is sending its Perseverance rover – its strongest and smartest explorer visitor to the surface yet – to look for evidence of ancient life on the Martian surface. The rover is carrying a helicopter that will make the first ever flight on another planet , as well as a variety of tools that will allow it to explore the surface looking for evidence of past alien activity . The rocket is the third to take off for Mars this month, as space agencies leap through the brief window in which the planets align to allow an efficient trip to the Red Planet. The UAE launched its Hope orbiter last week , followed by the Chinese Questions to Heaven spacecraft shortly after . The European Space Agency and Roscosmos were forced to postpone the launch of their lander, Rosalind Franklin, after delays meant it would not be able to leave in time . Gesiotto Gilbert: ‘I’m Ready to Fight for the Community that I Care About’
Trump-endorsed Republican candidate Madison Gesiotto Gilbert told Breitbart News that she’s “ready to fight” in Congress for the families in Ohio and the state’s freshly minted Thirteenth Congressional District. Gesiotto Gilbert, a small business owner and attorney — who was a national surrogate for the Trump campaign in 2016 and 2020 — told Breitbart News, “I’m ready to fight for the people I care about, I’m ready to fight for the community that I care about that I love where I grew up.” She is running in Ohio’s newly minted Thirteenth Congressional District after the redistricting process took a seat away from the Buckeye State. The former Trump national surrogate noted that the district now includes all of Summit County for the first time in over 50 years, saying that “the Akron area has been made whole.” When the district was created, it absorbed parts of all the congressional seats in the surrounding area, including the ones represented by Democrat Reps. Tim Ryan and … [Read more...] about Gesiotto Gilbert: ‘I’m Ready to Fight for the Community that I Care About’
Anti-abortion centers to grow, wield more influence post-Roe
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — “Woman’s Choice,” the sign proclaims in bold pink letters. But despite promising abortion information and free pregnancy testing, the facility in Charleston, West Virginia, is designed to steer women facing an unwanted pregnancy away from choosing an abortion. That will become much easier now that the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that states like West Virginia can make abortion illegal. It's one of hundreds of so-called crisis pregnancy centers nationwide whose aim is to discourage women from seeking abortions. The facilities, which have been accused repeatedly of deceiving women about their true purpose, are expected to wield even more influence in states where the dwindling number of clinics are now canceling abortion appointments. Often religiously affiliated, the anti-abortion centers are not licensed medical facilities and do not … [Read more...] about Anti-abortion centers to grow, wield more influence post-Roe
Government ‘misleading’ over role in rail strikes, legal advice suggests
The Government is being accused of “misleading” the public by insisting it does not have a role in negotiations to resolve the bitter rail dispute. The TUC said an independent legal opinion undermined the Government’s claims that the dispute is just between the train operators and unions. The union organisation said the legal opinion it has received clarifies that the contracts between rail operators and Government allow the Government to apply financial sanctions if operators do not follow its directions in the current dispute. The legal opinion, commissioned by the TUC from Michael Ford QC of Old Square Chambers, advises that Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has “very extensive powers” over what can be agreed between rail operators and unions, and “very significant contractual power” to direct how industrial disputes are handled, the TUC said. Recommended By-elections show voters have run out of patience with Boris Johnson Rail operators are … [Read more...] about Government ‘misleading’ over role in rail strikes, legal advice suggests
Take it from a software engineer: Big Tech’s monopoly is stifling innovation | Opinion
There's a critical debate in Washington happening right now that will shape the future of technological innovation for decades to come. In response to an internet that has grown increasingly calcified, with only a handful of large players dominating commercial activity, Congress has actually stepped up to the plate: The Senate and House are poised to pass bipartisan legislation that would create a more level playing field for startups and entrepreneurs to compete. The bill, S2992 or the American Innovation and Choice Online Act, was introduced by Senators Klobuchar and Grassley to end platform overreach by the world's largest tech companies like Facebook and Google . And we in the community of independent developers are closely watching its progress. The bill would address an obvious problem: A few dominant tech companies have become gatekeepers of the internet, boosting their own products and undermining smaller competitors. Consider the story of one of the most … [Read more...] about Take it from a software engineer: Big Tech’s monopoly is stifling innovation | Opinion

Donald Trump’s views on abortion and Roe v. Wade in his own words
With less than two months until the election, President Donald Trump has continued to express his views on abortion and the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision, during his time in office, as well as before entering the White House. Trump is set to face off against Democratic challenger Joe Biden in the first presidential debate on Tuesday and following Trump's recent nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, abortion and Roe v. Wade are two issues likely to be brought up. Here's what Trump has said about both issues over the years. 1999 Interview on NBC News' Meet the Press "Well, look, I'm very pro-choice," Trump said when asked if he would ban partial-birth abortions as president. "I hate the concept of abortion. I hate it. I hate everything it stands for. I cringe when I listen to people debating the subject. But you still – I just believe in choice. And, again, it may be a little bit of a New York background, because there is some different attitude … [Read more...] about Donald Trump’s views on abortion and Roe v. Wade in his own words
AOC lists seven ways Democrats can fight back against Roe being overturned
After the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last week, Democrats have been looking for a way to fight back against a decision that has been considered a major success for conservative Republicans . President Joe Biden called for voters to "make their voices heard" in the next elections, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York shared a list of seven actions that she thinks Democrats can take to "fix this and act." Here's a breakdown of these seven actions and what each entails. 1. Restrain judicial review Judicial review allows the Supreme Court to declare a legislative or executive action to be in violation of the Constitution. The doctrine was established in the case of Marbury v. Madison in 1803, deciding that the Supreme Court has the power to overturn an act of Congress or an executive order on the ground that it violates the Supreme Law of the Land —the Constitution. In their ruling in favor of Mississippi's ban on abortion … [Read more...] about AOC lists seven ways Democrats can fight back against Roe being overturned
Jane Roe’s daughter outraged over Supreme Court’s abortion ruling
One of the daughters of the woman at the center of the original Roe v. Wade case said she was "devastated" by Friday's Supreme Court ruling, which she said has reversed "all that hard work and all the sacrificing" on her mother's part. "I was in disbelief. I was devastated. I knew it was coming, but it was just it was too real, that it really happened and that they've taken us back 50 years from all the hard work and everything that women went through to get to where we are now," Melissa Mills, the eldest daughter of Norma McCorvey, said Monday on CNN 's New Day program. McCorvey, who was known as "Jane Roe" in the 1973 abortion case, had three children. Her last child was the "Roe baby," whom she gave birth to during the lengthy court proceedings surrounding the case. McCorvey gave birth to Mills as a teenager, and Mills was later adopted by her maternal grandmother. On Monday, Mills told CNN her mother would have been just as devastated as she was over the Court's … [Read more...] about Jane Roe’s daughter outraged over Supreme Court’s abortion ruling
Nearly All Abortions in Mississippi Will Be Illegal in 10 Days
Mississippi on Monday certified its trigger law banning most abortions, joining 12 other states that had similar laws ready to take effect once the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, a landmark ruling protecting abortion rights. Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch's certification of the law means abortions will be banned statewide except when the mother's life is in danger or a pregnancy was the result of rape or incest. The certification means the law will go into effect within 10 days. "In about a week and a half, you'll have zero abortions taking place at the clinic in Jackson, or in hospitals or any place else, except to save the life of the mother, or if it's proven, and not just an allegation, of a rape or an incest," said Republican Mississippi state Senator Joey Fillingane , who authored the 2007 trigger law language in addition to co-sponsoring the state's 2018 abortion law that was upheld by the Supreme Court, on Friday, according to WDAM. Under the … [Read more...] about Nearly All Abortions in Mississippi Will Be Illegal in 10 Days
