After White House chief of staff John F. Kelly pressured President Trump last fall to install his top deputy, Kirstjen Nielsen, atop the Department of Homeland Security, the president lost his temper when conservative allies argued she wasn’t sufficiently hardline on immigration. “You didn’t tell me she was a [expletive] George W. Bush person,” Trump growled. After Kelly told Fox News Channel’s Bret Baier in a January interview that Trump’s immigration views had not been “fully informed” during the campaign and had since “evolved,” the president berated Kelly in the Oval Office — his shouts so loud they could be heard through the doors. And just 11 days ago, Kelly grew so frustrated on the day that Trump fired Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin that Nielsen and Defense Secretary James Mattis both tried to calm him down and offer pep talks, according to three people with knowledge of the incident. … [Read more...] about ‘When you lose that power’: How John Kelly faded as White House disciplinarian

Behind the Hostility: How Trump and the media descended to mutual disgust
close Video Kurtz: Nonstop news cycle fuels anger between Trump and Press 'MediaBuzz' host Howard Kurtz weighs in on the tumultuous relationship between President Trump and the news media. This article is based on dozens of interviews and fresh research since the beginning of 2018, a chapter-length postscript to my book Media Madness: Donald Trump, The Press and The War Over the Truth. After a year and a half of open warfare between the president and the press, some journalists seized upon a term that conveyed their disdain for both Donald Trump and his fiercely loyal followers. Trump, they said, was leading a cult. “Republicans embrace the ‘cult’ of Trump,” said the Washington Post. Joe Scarborough said GOP primary voters had “devolved into a Trumpist cult.” MSNBC’s Chris Matthews even made an allusion to the mass suicides at Jonestown. And then the president wandered into a crisis that prompted even many … [Read more...] about Behind the Hostility: How Trump and the media descended to mutual disgust

Robert Reich: CEOs Need to Stand Up to Trump
Former President Bill Clinton's Labor Secretary says big business and Wall Street need to stand up to President Donald Trump because they "have the power to constrain the most dangerous, divisive, and anti-democratic president ever to occupy the Oval Office." Robert Reich, the Chancellor's Professor of Public Policy at the University of California at Berkeley and Senior Fellow at the Blum Center for Developing Economies, was secretary of labor under President Clinton and also served in the administrations of former Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter. He writes on his website that Trump, who he refers to as the "mad king," has "grown even more erratic and unhinged," yet says today's CEOs will not take a stand against him. Consider JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, he notes. "Dimon has gone out of his way not to criticize the mad king," Reich wrote. "While he 'strongly disagreed' with Trump's equating white supremacists to protesters in Charlottesville last summer, he … [Read more...] about Robert Reich: CEOs Need to Stand Up to Trump
Trump doesn’t listen to Mattis anymore, officials say
WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary James Mattis learned in May from a colleague that President Donald Trump had made the decision to withdraw the U.S. from the Iran nuclear deal, and scrambled to get his boss on the phone before a formal announcement was made. It wouldn't be the last time he was caught off guard by a presidential announcement.A month later, Mattis was informed that Trump had ordered a pause in U.S. military exercises with South Korea only after the president had already promised the concession to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.Last week, Trump again blindsided and overruled his defense secretary by publicly directing the Pentagon to create a sixth military branch overseeing operations in space. The way these recent presidential decisions on major national security issues have played out, as detailed by current and former White House and defense officials, underscores a significant change in Mattis's role in recent months. The president is relying less … [Read more...] about Trump doesn’t listen to Mattis anymore, officials say
