The Summit of G-7 leaders, the group of the world’s “most industrialised economies”, was held in Germany this week, where India along with Indonesia and a few other countries, was a special invitee. Last week, we told you about the BRICS summit of emerging economies, that was once seen as a complementary and now a potentially competitive grouping to the G-7. What they have in common is that the agenda is driven by the economy. A bit about the G-7: 1. The Grouping began as the Group of Six in 1975- with a meeting of leaders of US, UK, West Germany, Italy, France and Japan, as a result of the Oil crisis and global currency exchange issues that decided to meet annually. 2. Canada joined in 1976- making it the G-7. The EU leadership is always invited to G-7 meets 3. In the 1990s after the fall of the Soviet Union and reunification of Germany, Russia was added to make it the G-8. However, after Russian wars with Georgia in 2008, and the annexation of Crimea in 2014, the club … [Read more...] about Worldview with Suhasini Haidar | What were the outcomes of the G7 Summit?

Rupert Murdoch and Jerry Hall are getting a divorce – NYT
(Reuters) -Media mogul Rupert Murdoch and actress Jerry Hall are getting a divorce, the New York Times reported on Wednesday, citing two people familiar with the matter. Murdoch got married to Hall in a low-key ceremony in central London in March 2016. The Fox Corp chairman and his former supermodel wife were frequent fodder for the tabloids, which chronicled their marriage at Spencer House and the festivities surrounding the elder Murdoch's 90th birthday celebration last year at Tavern on the Green in New York City. Murdoch's divorce, his fourth, is unlikely to alter the ownership structure of businesses he holds stakes in, which include Fox Corp, the parent company of Fox News Channel, and News Corp publisher of the Wall Street Journal, according to the report. The 91-year-old Murdoch controls News Corp and Fox Corp through a Reno, Nevada-based family trust that holds roughly a 40% stake in voting shares of each company. Bryce Tom, a spokesperson for Murdoch, declined to … [Read more...] about Rupert Murdoch and Jerry Hall are getting a divorce – NYT

Pride in London has returned to the capital for the first time since 2019, celebrating 50 years since the very first march took place in 1972. According to the organisers, 30,000 people have registered to join the march from more than 600 LGBT+ community groups. Top officials urged to launch probe into Boris Johnson ‘job for Carrie’ claims
Cabinet Secretary Simon Case has been urged to launch an independent probe into claims Boris Johnson tried to secure plum jobs for wife Carrie. Labour called for an investigation, after the Mirror revealed claims this week that Mr Johnson had talked to Downing Street aides about getting jobs for Mrs Johnson. And it follows allegations he tried to make her his £100,000-a-year chief of staff two years earlier, when he was Foreign Secretary and she was his girlfriend. Deputy Labour leader Angela Rayner wrote to Mr Case today, saying it was "clearly inappropriate" for the PM to be "judge and jury in his own case." She suggested either Mr Case, the Cabinet Secretary, investigate the claims himself, refer the matter to a Parliament committee, or encourage the PM to appoint an "emergency interim ethics watchdog" to replace Lord Geidt, who quit last week. Lord Geidt is reported to believe the incident “could be a matter for his successor” and “could be ripe for investigation”. … [Read more...] about Top officials urged to launch probe into Boris Johnson ‘job for Carrie’ claims
China’s top diplomat visits Myanmar amid opposition protest
China’s top diplomat on Saturday arrived on his first visit to Myanmar since the military seized power last year to attend a regional meeting that the government said was a recognition of its legitimacy and opponents protested as a violation of peace efforts. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will join counterparts from Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam in a meeting of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation group in the central city of Bagan, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The grouping is a Chinese-led initiative that includes the countries of the Mekong Delta, a potential source of regional tensions due to an increasing number of hydroelectric projects that are altering the flow and raising concerns of ecological damage. China has built 10 dams along the upper stretch of the Mekong, the part it calls the Langcang. Military government spokesman Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun told a news conference in the capital Naypyitaw on Friday that the attendance of the foreign ministers at the … [Read more...] about China’s top diplomat visits Myanmar amid opposition protest
China’s Xi visits changed Hong Kong for handover anniversary
Chinese leader Xi Jinping arrived Thursday in Hong Kong to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the British handover of a city that his rule has transformed from a global hub known for its political freedoms to one that is much more tightly controlled by the Communist Party. In a staged event carried live on Chinese TV, students and others lined the platform of a high-speed rail station and packed a red carpet to greet the leader making his first trip outside of mainland China in nearly 2 ½ years — a choice that underscored Hong Kong's ever-closer ties to the mainland. Waving small red Chinese and Hong Kong flags, the students chanted “Welcome, welcome! Warm welcome!” while city leader Carrie Lam greeted Mr. Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan. Under Mr. Xi's leadership, China has reshaped Hong Kong, cracking down on protests, imposing a strict national security law used to silence dissent, introducing a more "patriotic" curriculum in schools, and revamping election laws to keep opposition … [Read more...] about China’s Xi visits changed Hong Kong for handover anniversary
New York shuts down Olivet University amid federal money-laundering probe
New York shut down Olivet University's operations in the state, saying the Evangelical Christian college was still largely run by a group of David Jang disciples linked to a 2018 criminal conspiracy. Jang, a Korean American cleric, founded Olivet in 2000. His followers are now in the crosshairs of Department of Homeland Security investigators probing whether the university was part of a scheme to launder money for criminals in China and the United States. The stinging rebuke by New York's Deputy Commissioner of Education cited "a pattern of mismanagement" at the university and its ties to "criminal activity" in ending Olivet's authorization to operate credit-bearing courses or programs in New York. (Olivet's campuses in Tennessee and California are likely to also come under scrutiny, and DHS may revoke Olivet's authorization to enroll international students.) The education department's decision to close the Olivet campuses in Manhattan and Dover, New York, after a two-year … [Read more...] about New York shuts down Olivet University amid federal money-laundering probe

Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) president K. Chandrasekhar Rao has appealed to the electors of the Presidential election, scheduled to be held on July 18, to vote as per their conscience after weighing the two candidates in the fray, and not based on their political affiliation. Addressing a meeting of TRS MPs, MLAs, MLCs, its State executive committee members and other senior leaders of the party convened in support of Yashwant Sinha, the candidate fielded by the Opposition, here on Saturday, the Telangana Chief Minister said Mr. Sinha’s candidature outweighs that of his rival’s as he was a towering personality. “He (Mr. Sinha) is an honest politician and an able administrator who handled the key portfolios of finance and external affairs in the Union Cabinet in the A.B. Vajpayee Government,” Mr. Rao said.
