Johnson and Johnson will stop selling its talc-based baby powder around the world from next year. The product has been at the centre of tens of thousands of legal complaints from women who claim the talc contained asbestos and caused them to develop ovarian cancer. Talc is mined from the earth and is found in seams close to asbestos, which is known to cause cancer. Johnson and Johnson denies the allegations and claims decades of independent research shows the product is safe to use. The healthcare company will replace its talc-based powder with cornstarch instead - citing "commercial" reasons. Johnson and Johnson ended sales of its talc-based baby power in the United States and Canada two years ago. At the time, the company blamed "misinformation" over the safety of the product for causing a decline in sales. This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The Louisiana Supreme Court on Friday denied an appeal filed by plaintiffs in the ongoing legal battle over the state’s abortion ban, allowing the ban to stay in effect. The ruling marked a major blow to abortion-rights advocates and providers, who had hoped the ban would be blocked for a third time, allowing Louisiana’s three abortion clinics to begin performing procedures again. “While it is disappointing that four of the seven justices, without any written explanation, issued a ruling that will effectively deny critical care to women throughout Louisiana, the litigation continues and we are confident we can affect meaningful change,” Joanna Wright, an attorney for the plaintiff, said Friday afternoon in addition to confirming the court's ruling. Following news of the ruling, Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry — a defendant in the case — tweeted … [Read more...] about Louisiana Supreme Court rejects appeal in abortion ban case

Kansas to recount abortion vote by hand, despite big margin
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas’ elections director says the state will go along with a request for a hand recount of votes from every county after last week’s decisive statewide vote affirming abortion rights, even though there was a 165,000-vote difference and a recount won’t change the result. Melissa Leavitt, of Colby in far western Kansas, requested the recount and declined to comment to reporters Friday evening, citing work obligations. But she said on an online site raising funds for a recount that she had “seen data” about the election. Her post was not more specific, and there is no evidence of significant problems with the election. Baseless election conspiracies have circulated widely in the U.S., particularly among supporters of former President Donald Trump, who has repeated false claims that he lost the 2020 election through fraud. Discovery made the call to not distribute the $90 million DC movie to theaters or on a streaming service despite it already being in postproduction. Liz Truss tax cut will save poor Brits just 76p a MONTH as they face ‘destitution’
Liz Truss faces mounting pressure as she is accused of plunging poor Brits into “destitution” with a tax cut that will give them just 76p a MONTH. New analysis warned the Tory leader favourite’s National Insurance change will hand a paltry sum to the worst-off tenth of households - compared to £93.19 a month to the richest tenth. The poorest will be £50 a month worse off from October, even after help with bills, the Tony Blair Institute said. Ms Truss’ rival Rishi Sunak warned she will leave people at risk of “real destitution” as energy bills are set to top £3,600 a year from October and £4,200 from January. In a bombshell intervention, he told Tory members: "If you support a plan that Liz is suggesting, which says she doesn't believe in doing that, doesn't believe in providing direct financial support to those groups of people.
