By: PTI 2019-01-17T16:16:01+05:30 The Supreme Court Thursday fixed a February-end deadline for the search committee on Lokpal to recommend a panel of names for appointment of the country's first anti-graft ombudsman. The search committee is headed by former apex court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi directed the Centre to provide the search committee requisite infrastructure and manpower to enable it to complete its work. The bench, also comprising justices L N Rao and S K Kaul, said it would hear the matter again on March 7. Attorney General K K Venugopal, appearing for the Centre, told the bench there were certain problems like lack of infrastructure and manpower due to which the search committee was not able to hold deliberations on the issue. After intense debate for nearly five hours, the Lok Sabha today passed The Constitution (One hundred and twenty-fourth amendment) Bill, 2019 to provide for reservation in public employment and higher education for economically weaker sections. At a voting held at around 10 PM on the last day of the winter session, 323 out of 326 MPs present voted in support of the Bill. The announcement of Speaker Sumitra Mahajan regarding the passing of the bill was greeted by chants of "bharat mata ki jai" by most members. Economic reservation in jobs and education is proposed to be provided by inserting clause(6) in Articles 15 and 16 of the Constitution. The apex court asked Attorney General K K Venugopal to file the affidavit on the matter by January 17. "You have to ensure on affidavit the steps taken on the issue of setting up of a search committee for the Lokpal," a bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice S K Kaul said. When the attorney general said that since the last order of September 2018, several steps have been taken, the bench asked him "what all have you done till date. So much time is being taken". RANCHI: Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Sunday expressed doubts over the effectiveness of offering reservation in education and jobs for an indefinite period to bring prosperity to the country. "The idea of Ambedkarji was to bring social harmony by introducing reservation for 10 years. But what we do is to extend the reservation every 10 years. There is a shortcoming," Mahajan said on the concluding day of a three-day event here. "Will reservation bring welfare to the country?" she asked. She stressed the need to follow Dr B.R. Ambedkar to bring social harmony in society and the country. "So long as we do not strengthen the spirit of patriotic feeling towards our country, overall development of the country is not possible," Mahajan said.
