Conservatives tipped to lose in Australian nail-biter election
Andrew Beatty (Agence France-Presse) (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Sydney, Australia ● Thu, May 19 2022 Australians punch drunk after three crisis-ridden years of fire, flood and plague will go to the polls on Saturday, in a tight race narrowly tipped to end a decade of conservative rule. Opinion polls have consistently shown center-left Labor ahead, suggesting a government led by veteran party lawmaker Anthony Albanese that would be more climate-friendly and less antagonistic toward China. But pugilistic Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who leads a conservative coalition, appears to be rapidly closing the gap as election day approaches. to Read Full Story SUBSCRIBE NOW Starting from IDR 55,500/month Unlimited access to our web and app content e-Post daily digital newspaper No advertisements, no interruptions Privileged access to our events and programs Subscription to our newsletters We accept Register to read 3 premium … [Read more...] about Conservatives tipped to lose in Australian nail-biter election
Support for Anies’ 2024 bid grows as governorship nears end
Nina A. Loasana (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Jakarta ● Thu, May 19 2022 Over the past few weeks, banners, posters and billboards of various sizes displaying the image of popular Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan have begun to pop up in numerous regions outside of the capital, as he inches closer to the end of his term in October. The roadside media seem to be trying to amplify his presence ahead of the presidential election in 2024. Some billboards openly endorse Anies for the 2024 presidential election, although others simply bear Idul Fitri wishes with his portrait. It remains unclear whether the outgoing governor, who does not have enough political support to make a run for the presidency, approved the erection of the roadside media as he has yet to make any statements about it. But many of the banners and billboards carry the name of groups claiming to be Anies supporters. to Read Full Story SUBSCRIBE NOW Starting from IDR 55,500/month Unlimited … [Read more...] about Support for Anies’ 2024 bid grows as governorship nears end
Long-tailed monkeys on the edge
Lisa Jones-Engel (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Norfolk, Virginia, United States ● Thu, May 19 2022 Indonesia is extraordinarily rich in primates—more than 40 species of monkeys, apes and prosimians can be found on islands throughout the archipelago. Unfortunately, one of those species, the long-tailed macaques, have targets on their backs. Long-tailed macaques are innovative and opportunistic; they thrive in the niches that humans create as we change the environment. However, their ecological and behavioral flexibility make them vulnerable in an unexpected way; their presence around villages and along the edges of forests makes them an easy target for traffickers who use horrific methods to trap them for sale to a handful of international pharmaceutical companies, with the demand for monkeys coming primarily from the United States, Japan, China and the European Union. Long-tailed macaques are being rounded up in forests and urban areas and forcibly removed from … [Read more...] about Long-tailed monkeys on the edge
Palm oil farmers plan second street protest against export ban
Divya Karyza and Yvette Tanamal (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Jakarta ● Thu, May 19 2022 Oil palm smallholders plan to organize another street protest in Jakarta to further pressure the government to lift its palm oil export ban, after having organized a sizable protest on Tuesday. Indonesian Oil Palm Farmers Association (Apkasindo) chairman Gulat Manurung said on Wednesday that, if the ban was not reviewed within the near future, the organization had plans to bring 1 million palm kernels to the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle in Central Jakarta, where the kernels would be processed into red palm cooking oil then sold, as a form of protest. Apkasindo previously organized hundreds of smallholder farmers to stage a protest in Jakarta and other parts of the country on Tuesday, demanding the government end a palm oil export ban that has slashed their income as fresh fruit bunch (TBS) prices continue to free fall amid an expected domestic supply glut. to Read Full Story … [Read more...] about Palm oil farmers plan second street protest against export ban
China in talks with automakers on EV subsidy extension
Reuters (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Shanghai, China ● Thu, May 19 2022 China is in talks with automakers about extending costly subsidies for electric vehicles (EV) that were set to expire in 2022, aiming to keep a key market growing as the broader economy slows, three people familiar with the matter said. The move by policymakers comes as the world's second-biggest economy has slowed sharply -- and auto sales along with it -- after cities led by Shanghai imposed tight COVID-19 lockdowns from March. The curbs have shut stores, disrupted supply chains and slashed spending, including on new homes. Government departments including the Information and Industrial Technology Ministry (MIIT) are considering a continuation of subsidies to EV buyers in 2023, said the people, who declined to be named as the discussions were private. to Read Full Story SUBSCRIBE NOW Starting from IDR 55,500/month Unlimited access to our web and app content e-Post daily … [Read more...] about China in talks with automakers on EV subsidy extension
