RMT boss calls on Shapps to ‘tone down the rhetoric and get on with his job’
The head of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) has called on Grant Shapps to “tone down the rhetoric and get on with his job” in order to settle the bitter dispute over jobs, pay and conditions. Train services have been crippled again on Saturday as thousands of RMT members stage the third 24-hour strike this week. RMT general secretary Mick Lynch joined workers on a picket line outside Euston Station in central London on Saturday morning. Strikers held up RMT banners and draped flags over the barrier which read: “Defend Rail Jobs Pay Conditions”, while the occasional driver would honk their vehicle’s horn as they drove past. Recommended By-elections show voters have run out of patience with Boris Johnson Speaking to the PA news agency, Mr Lynch called on the Transport Secretary to engage in “constructive” talks with the unions amid little sign of a breakthrough in the deadlocked row. ‘Elvis’ Fact or Fiction: Colonel Tom Parker Biographer on What’s Real and Not in Baz Luhrmann Biopic
Click here to read the full article. Does the phrase “That’s All Right, Mama” apply to the new “ Elvis ” movie… as in, “that’s all correct, ma’am”? No one is probably expecting that ; any practiced watcher of biopics knows virtually any example will take deep liberties with the facts for dramatic purposes. And maybe it’s a given that a director who puts hip-hop and hard rock on his period-film soundtracks, as Baz Luhrmann does, might favor effect over total verisimilitude. Still, “Elvis” is right on enough counts — literally or spiritually — that it’s worth trying to separate fact from fiction in the movie’s narrative of Elvis Presley (played by Austin Butler) and his nearly career-long manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). There may be no one better to go to who can provide the truth on both Presley and “the Colonel,” in tandem, than the latter’s biographer, Alanna Nash. Nash, a veteran music journalist, published “The Colonel: The Extraordinary Story of Colonel … [Read more...] about ‘Elvis’ Fact or Fiction: Colonel Tom Parker Biographer on What’s Real and Not in Baz Luhrmann Biopic
New Chelsea owner Todd Boehly – how rich is he and how did he make his money?
The Premier League and the UK Government have approved the sale of Chelsea Football Club to a consortium led by American businessman Todd Boehly . Boehly, 48, is leading the group in the record-breaking purchase of the third-best team in England after 19 years of ownership from ousted oligarch Roman Abramovich . Times have been good for the Blues, with 21 trophies including five Premier Leagues and two Champions Leagues. The takeover, worth £4.25billion, comes at the end of lengthy negotiations and will leave Abramovich without a penny from the sale, as his assets are still frozen after he was sanctioned following Russia ’s invasion of Ukraine . A government statement read: "Late last night the UK Government reached a position where we could issue a licence that permits the sale of Chelsea Football Club. "Following extensive work, we are now satisfied that the full proceeds of the sale will not benefit Roman Abramovich or any other sanctioned individual," it … [Read more...] about New Chelsea owner Todd Boehly – how rich is he and how did he make his money?

Kashmiris go Online for life partners
Srinagar: Kashmiris have increasingly started turning to the world-wide web to find matches for their sons and daughters as traditional ways of arranging marriages have become a time-consuming and expensive affair. Many Kashmiri men and women have registered themselves on matrimonial sites on the Internet after facing problems in finding a decent match using the good old traditional way of engaging a marriage broker. "The best thing about matrimonial sites is that you have a wide range to choose from and the process is almost anonymous as nobody in your neighbourhood or relations knows about it," says a candid 27-year-old dentist Sanaa who has registered herself on one of the country's leading matchmaking sites. Another reason for choosing the Internet, she says, is that the sites charge nominal fees when compared to marriage brokers in Kashmir, who have become a "huge liability" considering the expenses associated with marriages. Sanaa's views are echoed by Neyaz Ahmad, a … [Read more...] about Kashmiris go Online for life partners
Defiant Boris Johnson Baulks at Calls to Resign After By-Election Losses
LONDON (AP) – A defiant British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was in a stubborn standoff with his frustrated Conservative Party on Saturday, after two thumping special election defeats renewed calls for a major change of government direction. Johnson dismissed the defeats as predictable mid-term blues, and said people expecting “some sort of psychological transformation” from him should know “that is not going to happen.” The prime minister told the BBC said he believed “voters are heartily sick of hearing about me and the things I´m alleged to have done wrong. What they want to hear is what we’re doing for them.” “What I want to do is to get on with changing and reforming and improving our systems and our economy,” he said. Despite the bullish tone, this is a perilous moment for Johnson, who is due to be out of the U.K. until Thursday at a Commonwealth meeting in Rwanda, a Group of Seven leaders’ gathering in Germany and a NATO summit in Spain. Simmering concerns about … [Read more...] about Defiant Boris Johnson Baulks at Calls to Resign After By-Election Losses
