Met Aims to Build Itself a Museum-Quality Plaza
More than 40 years after its last makeover, the plaza in front of the Metropolitan Museum of Art is showing its age: the fountains are leaking, the sidewalk is crumbling, and the trees are dying. Overcrowding on the institution’s grand front steps — one of the most popular meeting places in Manhattan — often causes bottlenecks for visitors trying to get to the front door. Now an ambitious plan is in the works to transform this four-block-long stretch along Fifth Avenue, from 80th to 84th Street, into a more efficient, pleasing and environmentally friendly space, with new fountains, tree-shaded allées, seating areas, museum-run kiosks and softer, energy-efficient nighttime lighting. A meeting was held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday for officials from the Met to sit down with some 2,000 neighborhood residents to explain the project. If all goes as scheduled, and the institution receives approval from various city agencies — including the Public Design Commission, Landmarks Preservation … [Read more...] about Met Aims to Build Itself a Museum-Quality Plaza
Engineers From Taiwan Bolstered China’s Chip Industry. Now They’re Leaving.
TAIPEI, Taiwan — The job offer from a Chinese semiconductor company was appealing. A higher salary. Work trips to explore new technologies. No matter that it would be less prestigious for Kevin Li than his job in Taiwan at one of the world’s leading chip makers. Mr. Li eagerly moved to northeast China in 2018, taking part in a wave of corporate migration as the Chinese government moved aggressively to build up its semiconductor industry. He went back to Taiwan after two years, as Covid-19 swept through China and global tensions intensified. Other highly skilled Taiwanese engineers are going home, too. For many, the strict pandemic measures have been tiresome. Geopolitics has made the job even more fraught, with China increasingly vocal about staking its claim on Taiwan, a self-ruled democracy. The Taiwanese government has begun to discourage local engineers from going to China, concerned that they were taking proprietary information with them. “Some who went to … [Read more...] about Engineers From Taiwan Bolstered China’s Chip Industry. James Webb Space Telescope captures astonishing photo of the most distant star in the known universe
Sign up to our free weekly IndyTech newsletter delivered straight to your inbox Sign up to our free IndyTech newsletter The James Webb Space Telescope has spotted the most distant star in the universe. The star, named Earendel after a character in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion , is 28 billion light-years from our own planet – twice the distance of the second furthest star, Icarus, which is 14.4 billion light-years away – although when it was first observed the light only took 12.9 billion years to reach Earth. Earendel is approximately 50 to 100 times more massive than our Sun, with the likelihood being that the star exploded into a supernova just a few million years after its birth. "We’re excited to share the first JWST image of Earendel, the most distant star known in our universe, lensed and magnified by a massive galaxy cluster," the Cosmic Spring astronomers wrote in the tweet announcing the new image. Astronomers can use … [Read more...] about James Webb Space Telescope captures astonishing photo of the most distant star in the known universe
Idaho Murders Updates: Suspect arrested, motive under investigation
Live Updates An arrest has been made in connection with the November murders of four University of Idaho students, nearly seven weeks after the brutal attack. Authorities took 28-year-old Bryan Christopher Kohberger into custody Friday in Monroe County, Pennsylvania. Kohberger, a graduate student at Washington State University, is facing first-degree murder and burglary charges, a Latah County prosecutor said in a press conference. Kohberger is being held without bond and will appear in a Pennsylvania court on Jan. 3 before he is extradited to Idaho. Police received over 19,000 tips and conducted over 300 interviews in the weeks since Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, Ethan Chapin, 20, and Xana Kernodle, 20, were found stabbed to death in an off-campus home on Nov. 13. On Friday, police searched Kohberger's apartment in Pullman, WA, and began cleanup efforts at the rental home where the four students were killed. Officials said the home remains an active crime … [Read more...] about Idaho Murders Updates: Suspect arrested, motive under investigation
UK steel industry on brink of ‘irreversible decline’, MPs warn Rishi Sunak
Britain's steel industry risks plunging into “irreversible decline” unless the Tories intervene, MPs warned tonight. A cross-party group has written to Rishi Sunak urging him to back moves to make the sector less polluting. A dozen Labour , Conservative and Welsh and Scottish nationalist Independent MPs have signed the letter, seen exclusively by the Mirror, calling on the Prime Minister to act. The letter warns the PM: “We are concerned that in the absence of government support the UK risks becoming the first G20 economy to see its domestic steel production go into irreversible decline.” Describing steel as “a vital, strategic industry in the UK”, the MPs call on Mr Sunak to “act now to safeguard the future of the industry”. Newly discovered Earth-sized planet may be ‘promising target’ to look for alien life, study says
Sign up to our free weekly IndyTech newsletter delivered straight to your inbox Sign up to our free IndyTech newsletter A new Earth-sized rocky planet discovered about 31 light years away may be a “promising target” to search for signs of extraterrestrial life , according to a new study. The research, published recently in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics, describes a planet orbiting its home star – the red dwarf Wolf 1069 – in the habitable zone that may be conducive for liquid water to exist on the planet’s surface. Researchers, including those from the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Germany, say the planet is a rocky planet with an Earth-like mass that may also have an atmosphere. These features, they say, make the planet one of few “promising targets” to look for signs of life-friendly conditions as well as life signature molecules. To put the new discovery into perspective, scientists explain that only a dozen of the over … [Read more...] about Newly discovered Earth-sized planet may be ‘promising target’ to look for alien life, study says
Ghost of a dead star glows pink in new Very Large Telescope image
Sign up to our free weekly IndyTech newsletter delivered straight to your inbox Sign up to our free IndyTech newsletter The European Southern Observatory (ESO) just released an image of the ghostly afterglow of a massive star ’s fiery death. The ESO has captured a 554-million pixel image of the Vela supernova remnant , a wispy formation still glowing with the energy released by a supernova , around 11,000 years ago. Found 800 light years away in the constellation Vela, also known as the Sails, the supernova remnant is one of the closest of its kind to Earth. The new image shows myriad interlocking filaments of gas glowing in shades of pink and orange. The colors are not entirely natural, but the result of using different camera filters — red, green, blue, and magenta. The bright blue stars seen in the image are in the foreground, sitting between Earth and the supernova remnant itself. The ESO also shared smaller images highlighting portions … [Read more...] about Ghost of a dead star glows pink in new Very Large Telescope image
In Austin, Recovery From Winter Storm Is Slow and Piecemeal
AUSTIN, Texas — Warmer weather has returned to Austin, Texas, after the winter storm that began to hit the state last Monday. It was a balmy 73 degrees in the city on Sunday. But to many residents in and around the capital who were still dealing with the storm’s fallout, progress in the recovery seemed frozen. More than 30,000 customers in Austin remained without power on Sunday night, according to Austin Energy, down from more than 100,000 last week but still a puzzling total to many residents who lost electricity on Wednesday. Adding to the misery was the continued presence of fallen trees and downed utility poles throughout the area. Life without lights, heat and electricity — and, in many cases, water — was a dominant theme of conversations over breakfast and before and after church services. All of it has tested residents’ patience. “We should have been prepared for something like this,” said Lory Ponce, 58, a South Austin resident whose property was battered by … [Read more...] about In Austin, Recovery From Winter Storm Is Slow and Piecemeal
British Steel owner faces calls to halt ‘unacceptable’ plan to cut 800 jobs
British Steel bosses were today urged to continue rescue talks with the Government amid plans to axe 800 hundred jobs. Business Minister Nusrat Ghani told MPs a "generous package of support" was under discussion with the manufacturing company, amid fears of redundancies at its plant at Scunthorpe, Lincs. Scunthorpe MP Holly Mumby-Croft said British Steel, owned by Chinese giant Jingye, should "immediately reconsider" the potential redundancies. "Jingye sat down yesterday with the unions and talked about laying off 800 British Steel workers,” she said in an emergency Commons debate. "I cannot and will not defend this decision which is unacceptable in every possible way for my constituents. "This is not a way to behave, it sends entirely the wrong message and breaches the spirit of negotiations, which I believe are the result of a level of government focus on steel and its wider issues, including energy and carbon costs, that are genuinely encouraging for the industry.
