Britain is seeing a boom in octopuses after they have been spotted along Cornwall 's coastline this month. Huge numbers of the slithery creature have been seen, in what experts are describing as a 'bumper year' for the species. Divers and snorkellers in the Cornish waters have reported an increase in sightings of Common Octopus - also known as Octopus vulgaris - along the Lizard peninsula, southern Cornwall. One fisherman in the village of Mevagissey reported catching a whopping 150 in a single day - compared to his usual catch of one or two a year. Despite its name, the large species of octopus is actually a rarity in the UK . Cornwall's crystal clear waters are now homing new visitors ( Image: Getty Images/iStockphoto) In fact, it has been recorded in Cornwall just twice a year on average. Local artist, former UL professor shows 70 years of his work
LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — For over eight decades Fred Packard has been creating art. He is celebrated by many in Louisiana for his work and dedication to the craft. Now, that work is on display at the Hillard Art Museum in Lafayette. The exhibit titled “Little Things: Drawings and Photographs by Fred Packard” offers a retrospective look into his career as an artist. The show features pieces of art created by Packard during his adventures around the world. He hopes people will have a greater understanding of him after the show. His collection starts with an old photo taken in his hometown and ends with photos he has learned to take with his iPhone. “It turned out that I have got hundreds of things that I’ve done through the years,” Packard says “But we were limited to the number of things we could hang and up. Basically, what I’ve done is pick something I created from each decade since the 50s.” Packard is a Louisiana native who first fell in love with art around the age of … [Read more...] about Local artist, former UL professor shows 70 years of his work
“I transformed my life after years of crippling anxiety”
I was raised in a small town in Pennsylvania, called Dover. My mom gave birth to me when she was 19 years old, and raised me on her own. This meant that managing the pressures of working, alongside having a child was difficult for her. Due to my mom's long work hours, I spent some time with my grandparents, and a lot of time alone, as I was growing up. Because I felt that I had to do a lot to raise myself, I began developing perfectionist tendencies. I'd come home, have a snack, do my homework, and call my mom, asking her if I could go outside to play—at the time, my routine became rigid as it allowed me to gain a sense of control. My mom worked long hours and I did not want to add any more stress to her day-to-day life, as she would arrive home exhausted. My grandparents also had their own children, so I didn't want to be a burden—something else that somebody had to worry about. So I learned from an early age to be silent. This soon developed into people pleasing, as I felt that … [Read more...] about “I transformed my life after years of crippling anxiety”

Pro-life groups blame Kansas amendment loss on ‘abortion industry’ campaign
Kansas voters last week became the first in the nation to weigh in on abortion access following the U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade. On August 2, Kansas voters resoundingly defeated a proposed amendment to the state constitution 59% to 41% that would have removed the right to an abortion and would have allowed state lawmakers to pass further restrictions in the future. The vote came as both a shock and a disappointment to pro-life leaders, who blamed misinformation spread by pro-abortion groups for the defeat of the referendum. "Sadly, thousands and thousands of babies will die in Kansas," president of the National Right to Life Committee Carol Tobias said in a statement released after the primary results. The referendum, referred to as the Value Them Both Amendment, was backed by several pro-life advocacy groups including the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), the nation's oldest pro-life organization. A representative from the NRLC told Newsweek … [Read more...] about Pro-life groups blame Kansas amendment loss on ‘abortion industry’ campaign
