Liberal immigration policy
Democrats “are on the wrong side of the immigration argument, the core issue shaping Western politics,” says Andrew Sullivan, a moderate-minded liberal writer at New York magazine. Sullivan is a gay liberal who led the push for single-sex marriage. But he is not an anti-America progressive. He has supported the border wall and recognizes the political extremism of the Democrats’ see-no-problem policies towards immigration:My own view is that the only Democrat who will beat Trump next year will campaign for control of immigration, legal and undocumented, in a sane and humane way. The issue will be dominant again — because of a huge wave of migrants, many of them rural Guatemalans, who are overwhelming the border, trying to enter the U.S. at a current pace of 100,000 a month. Their ability to claim asylum under current law permits them to show up at the border, get admitted and processed by the Border Patrol, and then released into the … [Read more...] about Andrew Sullivan: ‘No Democrat’ Has Immigration Policy to Beat Trump
President Donald Trump stumped for Republicans at Tuesday’s Iowa MAGA rally, warning that Democrat immigration policies are lethal and if voters want safe communities, they need to organize. Trump said Democrats want to turn American “into a giant sanctuary for criminal aliens and the MS-13 killers that we’re getting out of the country, by the way, by the thousands.”“They’ve taken over towns, I mean literally, it could happen to your community,” Trump said of MS-13 gang members. He said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials go into these towns and have to fear as they get the gang members “the hell out of there…liberate towns and small cities in different places of long Island and others.” “If we didn’t have ICE it wouldn’t happen, so we have to cherish our law enforcement, we have to protect our law enforcement,” proclaimed Trump. “The Democrat immigration policies aren’t just … [Read more...] about Trump: Democrat Immigration Policies Aren’t Just Wrong, They’re Lethal
BROWNSVILLE -- Beto O’Rourke is trying to drive up turnout in South Texas by tapping into passions stirred by separation of immigrant children from their parents and widespread revulsion toward corporate-funded politicians. His strategy for converting the lower Rio Grande Valley from primary-night embarrassment to November surprise also relies heavily on word of mouth about his relentless stumping and the border region's resentment of how it's been treated by Washington and Austin. In a swing through Laredo, McAllen and Brownsville over the weekend, the Democratic Senate candidate excited large crowds most when he talked about clean-money elections and pivoting U.S. immigration policy away from building a wall along the Texas-Mexico and toward helping young people brought into the country without papers. As he concluded his third town hall of the weekend, O’Rourke was asked if he has made headway toward solving Texas Democrats’ vexing problem of low turnout in South … [Read more...] about Beto O’Rourke tries to tap border region’s ‘fierce pride’, anger at Trump’s immigration policy
Gallery: In Dalton, Adams touts pro-immigrant policies DALTON, Ga. — Democratic candidate for governor Stacey Abrams said Wednesday night that a program of the Whitfield County Sheriff's Office "terrorizes families." Though she did not address the local law enforcement agency specifically, she told a packed audience at the Dalton Convention & Visitors Bureau that participation in the 287(g) program destabilizes communities. The program, administered through U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, allows sheriff's offices to train and enforce immigration laws. Whitfield County Sheriff Scott Chitwood signed a memorandum of agreement with an ICE associate director to take part in the program in June 2016. The program allows the department's officers to check an ICE database on an inmate at the jail, revealing whether the person could be subject to deportation. The jail can hold the inmate for three days as they wait for ICE officers to pick them up. During her speech … [Read more...] about In Dalton, Adams touts pro-immigrant policies
