The Kerala State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) has filed a suo motu case on the reported delay in police inquest proceedings after the death of a tribeswoman that led to a further lag in her post-mortem examination. K. Baijunath, commission judicial member, on Tuesday asked the District Police Chief (Kozhikode city) and the Superintendent, taluk hospital, Thamarassery, to submit a report within a week. Madhavi, 90, a resident of Ambalakkunnu tribal colony at Kakkayam in Koorachund grama panchayat, died on her way to the taluk hospital on Saturday. Since there was no mortuary there, the body had to be taken to the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode. There was, however, a delay of eight hours. It was pointed out that police officers and the staff in the Department for the Development of Scheduled Tribes did not take her to hospital in time. … [Read more...] about Rights panel registers suo motu case on tribeswoman’s death

Triumph for Travancore Royal Family, SC Says It Still Has Shebait Right Over Padmanabhaswamy Temple
In a major victory for the royal family of Travancore, the Supreme Court on Monday affirmed their right as shebait of Shree Padmanabhaswamy temple. The Kerala High Court judgment, taking away all rights of the royal family from management and affairs of the temple, was set aside by a bench led by Justice Uday U Lalit. Reading out that operative part of the judgment, the judge said the death of the Travancore ruler in 1991, who signed the Covenant, does not affect Shebaitship of the Travancore royal family. The bench made it clear that the principle of escheat will not apply and hence, the properties of the temple cannot be reversed to the state after death of the last ruler in 1991. This essentially means that the royal family will continue to act as trustee of the temple and will have rights to offer prayers, have a say in the temple management. The bench held that an administrative committee, to be headed by the district judge of Thiruvanathpuram, will conduct day-to-day … [Read more...] about Triumph for Travancore Royal Family, SC Says It Still Has Shebait Right Over Padmanabhaswamy Temple

Former President Donald Trump said he invoked his Fifth Amendment rights, per the advice of his attorneys, during his deposition as part of New York Attorney General Letitia James’ civil investigation, calling it an "unfounded politically motivated Witch Hunt," adding that he had "no choice," due to the Biden administration and prosecutors across the nation having "lost all moral and ethical bounds of decency." Trump was set to sit down with attorneys from the state attorney general’s office behind-closed-doors, just days after the FBI raided his home at Mar-a-Lago, as part of an unrelated federal investigation involving the National Archives and Records Administration and classified materials the former president allegedly took with him from the White House to … [Read more...] about Trump invokes Fifth Amendment rights in deposition for New York AG James’ civil investigation
Bucket Hats Are Having a Hollywood Moment — Here Are the Best Bucket Looks For Right Now
Click here to read the full article. If anyone is able to make a self-deprecating and comically bad action hero named Lady Bug swoon-worthy it’s Brad Pitt , whose most embarrassing moments in “ Bullet Train ” (like getting sprayed in the face with a bidet or losing his train ticket within minutes) is made just an ounce less cringe by the coolness factor afforded to him by a stylish outfit — namely, a floppy white bucket hat and wide-rimmed glasses that remain his staple accessories throughout most of the film. The first time you see Pitt without the floppy headwear is when it’s forced off him while in a showdown against Bad Bunny in a desolate train cabin (Bad Bunny is one of the first casualties as half a dozen assassins attempt to kill each other on board the bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto to get their hands on a briefcase full of cash). Once Lady Bug successfully stabs him in the heart and cleans up the mess, he swiftly puts the hat back on, not a single blood stain to … [Read more...] about Bucket Hats Are Having a Hollywood Moment — Here Are the Best Bucket Looks For Right Now
Top Tory Suella Braverman attacks the UK’s ‘rights culture created by Tony Blair’
Suella Braverman attacked what she described as a "rights culture" in Britain that did not exist before 1998, one year after Tony Blair became Prime Minister. The Attorney General criticised equalities experts on "vastly inflated salaries" who have "misconstrued and weaponised" equality laws to fight those who challenge their views as perpetrators of hate speech. In a speech to the think-tank Policy Exchange, Ms Braverman claimed many institutions are "misinterpreting" the Equality Act leaving many going "beyond the law", pressured by "moral obligations". "We now have a ‘rights culture’ in a way that did not exist prior to 1998. "Aspects of this are causing confusion and distress. In my view, many of the difficult cases we have seen, have been symptomatic of this long tail of Blairism," Ms Braverman moaned. Woman alleges she was sedated during abortion rights protest at Warriors game
An abortion rights activist filed a federal lawsuit on Wednesday against the city of San Francisco and its police and fire departments, alleging she was injected with a sedative during a protest at a recent Warriors -Celtics NBA finals game. On June 13, Kareim McKnight and her friend Amanda Piasecki walked down to the floor of Chase Center during the game's first quarter, with banners reading, “Overturn Roe? Hell No!” to protest the Supreme Court’s expected decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, said the lawsuit, filed by civil rights attorney John Burris in the U.S. District Court for Northern California. As McKnight and her friend chanted, “Abortion on demand and without apology,” near seats on the floor, they were “forcibly dragged” out of the arena into the stadium garage, where McKnight was thrown to the ground and handcuffed, the complaint said. A security guard reportedly held his knee on her back, according to the complaint. McKnight expressed that she was peacefully … [Read more...] about Woman alleges she was sedated during abortion rights protest at Warriors game

Right Foot Forward | It’s 1-0 for Nitish-Tejashwi, But Last Word Not Yet Out on Bihar
Such is the acute despondency in the Opposition ranks that the slightest sign of setback for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sets off paroxysms of joy not only among politicians but also cheerleaders in the media. To be fair, the turn of events in Bihar over the last two days are significant and it would be a mistake to dismiss them as another flash in the pan that will fizzle out with the next draft of westerly winds. This also explains the cautious reactions of the BJP to what is being seen by many as a silent coup in which the master strategist Amit Shah was outsmarted by Nitish Kumar, the ultimate survivor. However, theories abound on whether the rapid developments were an outcome of elaborate planning or a defensive strike by Nitish Kumar pushed to the wall and facing the threat of political extinction. Coincidentally, when the drama in Patna was playing out, in distant Mumbai the new Eknath Shinde-Devendra Fadnavis government was taking oath. So, whether it happened by … [Read more...] about Right Foot Forward | It’s 1-0 for Nitish-Tejashwi, But Last Word Not Yet Out on Bihar
In Guam, the nearest domestic abortion clinic is 4,000 miles away. How will Roe’s reversal change the U.S. territory?
The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which had made abortion a constitutionally protected right, could have a chilling effect on reproductive rights in Guam. Advocates say women have already been living under a de facto ban in the largely Catholic U.S. Pacific Island territory and fear it could get more restrictive. No surgical abortion has been performed on the island since 2018, when the last doctor trained to provide the procedure retired, according to the ACLU and the Bureau of Women’s Affairs. “People in Guam were already living in a post-Roe world,” Alexa Kolbi-Molinas, deputy director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Reproductive Freedom Project, told NBC Asian America. “This is what we will see again if extremist politicians enact new abortion bans and force women into second-class status.” The Supreme Court ruling might have ramifications for Pacific Islanders in the two other U.S. Pacific territories, the Northern Mariana Islands and … [Read more...] about In Guam, the nearest domestic abortion clinic is 4,000 miles away.
