India at 75 The issue dated August 15, with the page of 1947 in black and white and in a vintage font, made one feel both proud and nostalgic. It is remarkable that our freedom fighters achieved the goal of Independence. The memories of their sacrifices must remain evergreen. Tushar Anand, Patna, Bihar The issue dated August 15, 2022, dedicated to India’s 75th year of Independence, was inspiring in many ways. It had enlightening articles by eminent writers, a rare photograph or two such as ‘The Second Round Table Conference in 1931’, and importantly, the facsimile of the iconic page of August 15, 1947. The day was also special as a close relative, who was a freedom fighter, and aged 104, was invited to unfurl the tricolour flag at a function in Chennai. R. Sivakumar, Chennai I am 76-plus and the special edition was a delight. The front page was a surprise. I was able to retrieve a copy of the full issue of The Hindu (August 15, 1947) preserved at home — it is in a poor … [Read more...] about Letters to the Editor — August 17, 2022

Why Lake Mead water levels are rising again
Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the U.S., has made national headlines recently due to its rapidly declining water levels. The reservoir across Nevada and Arizona is formed by the Hoover Dam on the Colorado River, and provides electricity for hundreds of thousands of people living across the area. Due to the ongoing drought in the western United States, it has been hurtling towards dead pool level —which could be catastrophic. However, its water levels have now risen for the first time in three years. On July 27, the lake's water levels were at 1,040.71 feet—the lowest it has been since the 1930s, not long after it was first created. The area was then hit by the wettest monsoon season the Las Vegas Valley has seen in a decade. From July 27, rain was falling every day, the Las Vegas Review Journal reported. As of August 15, the lake's levels were at 1,042.29 feet, meaning water levels rose by 18 inches. Some areas saw more than a half inch of rain in just 10 minutes, … [Read more...] about Why Lake Mead water levels are rising again
Trump and allies inciting base against FBI, Kinzinger warns
U.S. Representative Adam Kinzinger has blamed Donald Trump supporters for a sharp rise in violent threats against the FBI since its agents' search of the former president's Mar-a-Lago residence last week. "This is ridiculous," the Illinois Republican said on CNN , talking about the threats against FBI agents and law enforcement personnel posted on social media by Trump supporters. "It's ridiculous obviously for what the former president has done, in terms of saying 'This is an attack on my home, I did nothing wrong,' and of course, from the little bit we know, it seems like there's certainly good reasons for the FBI to have done what they did," the U.S. representative said. Asked by host Wolf Blitzer if he held Trump responsible for inciting his supporters, Kinzinger said: "Yes, absolutely, 100 percent." He added: "Members of Congress , Senators, any Republican elected official out there that rushes to be the first on television or the first to Twitter to … [Read more...] about Trump and allies inciting base against FBI, Kinzinger warns
Teen refusing to call mom’s step-kid their “sister” due to behavior praised
The internet has backed a teenager who refused to let his step-sister into his flat because she's too spoiled and her parents let her be. In a post shared on Reddit last Monday, the teenager, who goes by the username u/Playful-League5248, explained that their mom remarried when they were 12, and since then they have a step-sister who is 10 years younger and very spoiled . According to medicine net, there are some behaviors that parents adopt that cause children to grow up spoiled, and these include pampering, being overprotective, constantly bailing your child out, and failing to follow up on punishments. The website warns that empty threats of punishment can prevent kids from fully feeling remorse and taking responsibility for their actions. The poster wrote: "I never had anything against her back then but I won't pretend I started caring about her all that much either or that I saw her as my sister. My mom and her husband spoil her rotten and have allowed her to … [Read more...] about Teen refusing to call mom’s step-kid their “sister” due to behavior praised
Of curbs to free speech
July 6 this year marked the 115th birth anniversary of Syama Prasad Mookerjee. A Minister in Jawaharlal Nehru’s Cabinet, Mookerjee had resigned to form the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, to which the Bharatiya Janata Party traces its origins. However, a little known fact about him went unnoticed. Mookerjee was one of the primary targets of the first amendment to the Constitution, by which the words “friendly relations with foreign States” were introduced as an exception to the right to free speech. The Nehru-Liaquat pact In 1949-50, there were large-scale communal riots in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), which led to a huge exodus of Hindus into West Bengal. Clause (C)(8) of the pact required the governments of both countries to … [Read more...] about Of curbs to free speech

The Department of Justice (DOJ) believes that the FBI acted outside of its purview authorized by the court during the Aug. 8 raid on former President Donald Trump’s home in Mar-a-Lago, a reporter told Fox News host Sean Hannity Monday night. “For the first time we have confirmation that the FBI and the Justice Department believes it over-collected evidence when it was at Mar-a-Lago, meaning it collected evidence not covered by the search warrant,” John Solomon, editor-in-chief of Just The News, said while discussing the report .
