Johnny Depp stars in first post-trial ad for Dior’s Sauvage: “Fearless”
Johnny Depp is starring in his first post-trial commercial for Dior fragrance brand Sauvage, following a high-profile court battle with ex-wife Amber Heard. Depp, 59, has been the focus of an avalanche of headlines in recent months, after a $50 million defamation lawsuit against Heard , 36, in response to a 2018 op-ed in The Washington Post , in which she said that she was a domestic abuse survivor. Following a high-profile trial in Fairfax, Virginia, the jury in June found that Heard had, indeed, defamed Depp and awarded him more than $10 million. Depp was ordered to pay $2 million to Heard—who had counter-sued for $100 million—for defaming her via comments made by his attorney Adam Waldman . In the immediate aftermath of the trial, Depp jetted off to the U.K. to perform in a series of concerts with Jeff Beck, later hitting the stage at shows across Europe. The shows have been used as the basis for Dior's new Sauvage ad with Depp, which shows him preparing to hit the … [Read more...] about Johnny Depp stars in first post-trial ad for Dior’s Sauvage: “Fearless”
The New Novels
ALTHOUGH the thing which Mr. Kipling is doing possesses such immediate significance as to hamper any cool judgment upon his measure of success, the place of honor for the year in English fiction seems indisputably to belong to Puck of Pook’s Hill. 1 It may be possible that merely as a piece of abstract literature this group of short stories will not ultimately fill the high position which now appears its due. Contemporary rating can never be infallible. But after all, this is of minor importance, since no tarnishing finger of time, no fading glamour, no change of taste, can alter the fact that in conceiving and carrying out such a plan the author proves his own claim to permanent greatness. With all his glitter (which we once feared might degenerate into glorified journalism), with all his restless flitting from land to land, his experimenting, his weakness for panache,—his Sousa moments, so to speak, — looking back upon his career it is now plain that he, the man, has been … [Read more...] about The New Novels
The American Consul and American Trade
THE year just completed will be memorable in the annals of the American Consular Service by reason of the important reforms effected both by legislation and by administrative action. The Reorganization Act of Apri 15, 1906, while not so far-reaching as the authors of the measure intended, marks an unprecedentedly long step towards perfection; it classifies and grades the consular offices more equably than before; provides systematic inspection and supervision by five inspectors; requires all fees for acts done by consular officers to be accounted for and turned into the Treasury, and, at the same time, provides adequate salaries for principal officers; Americanizes the service by requiring all officers receiving $1000 per annum or more to be American citizens; prohibits principal officers from engaging in business or practicing law for private profit, and empowers the President to make suitable tariffs for the service. The civil service features of the original bill, that is, the … [Read more...] about The American Consul and American Trade
Shakespeare of Warwickshire
PROFESSOR LOUNSBURY, who reigns sternly but wisely as a critic in the literary demesne where the writer dwells, says that “ Shakespeare is the one writer about whom nothing new can be said ; that is, nothing rational.” Humbly accepting this dictum, though at a loss where a place is to be found for our great critic with his third priceless volume just out, we venture the opinion that some of the things said are not so old but that they are worth saying over again. Is there not, for example, a place for a study of Shakespeare in his habitat ? The ground may yield something like grass,— old, but new and welcome in the spring. It is a mistake to limit the associations of the great citizen to Stratford-uponAvon. He does not belong so much to this dull little village as to all Warwickshire; and if we are to find any relation between the man and his environment, we must take the wider circuit. The question is not as to the walls within which he was born and the grave where his bones lie … [Read more...] about Shakespeare of Warwickshire
Lin-Manuel Miranda responds to ‘illegal, unauthorized’ ‘Hamilton’ play by Texas church
"Hamilton" creator Lin-Manuel Miranda is defending his award-winning work after a Texas church staged an allegedly unauthorized version of the Broadway musical. "Grateful to all of you who reached out about this illegal, unauthorized production. Now lawyers do their work," Miranda tweeted Wednesday . Last weekend, The Door Christian Fellowship Ministries in McAllen, Texas, produced and livestreamed a rendition of “Hamilton” that appeared to conclude with a sermon by a church pastor comparing being gay to being addicted to alcohol or drugs. The final sermon by an associate pastor, Victor Lopez, compared homosexuality to drug addiction, according to a full video of the performance. “Maybe you struggle with alcohol, with drugs, homosexuality, maybe you struggle with other things in life, your finances, whatever, relationships,” the video shows Lopez say. “God can help you tonight.” Lin-Manuel Miranda talks inspiration for ‘Hamilton’ and … [Read more...] about Lin-Manuel Miranda responds to ‘illegal, unauthorized’ ‘Hamilton’ play by Texas church
Kindergartner in Louisiana allegedly forced out of school because her parents are a same-sex couple
A married same-sex couple in Louisiana was allegedly told their newly adopted daughter could not attend kindergarten at a religious school because of their “lifestyle choices.” Emily and Jennie Parker said they learned on Saturday they needed to find a new school for their 5-year-old daughter, Zoey, because their marriage didn’t adhere to the teachings at the Bible Baptist Academy in DeQuincy, they told NBC News Wednesday during a phone interview. “Because of our lifestyle choices, we wouldn’t be a good fit for the school,” Jennie Parker, 31, said they were told during a meeting with a pastor and the school’s director. Emily Parker, 28, said during the meeting only two days before the school year was set to begin, the pastor told her Bible Baptist Academy was a religious-based institution that taught more than just academics. She says he told her marriage is between a man and a woman only and that is what was taught at the school. Zoey attended pre-school at the school … [Read more...] about Kindergartner in Louisiana allegedly forced out of school because her parents are a same-sex couple
Rudy Giuliani sued for $262K by ex-wife: What we know
Rudy Giuliani's ex-wife has said he could face jail time if he doesn't pay her more than a quarter of a million dollars due under their divorce settlement. Judith Giuliani is suing the former New York City mayor for $262,000. In a lawsuit filed on Tuesday in the Supreme Court of the State of New York, she also claimed that a check written by her ex-husband for $10,000 bounced "due to insufficient fund." She has also claimed that Donald Trump 's former attorney owes her $140,000 for expenses related to their Florida condo, as well as payments for their housekeeper at the residence. Lawyers representing Judith Giuliani said that he is in contempt of court for allegedly skipping out on the payment. "Your failure to appear in court may result in immediate arrest or imprisonment for contempt of court," the papers say, per Page Six . In 2018, Judith Giuliani filed for divorce from the former New York mayor, after 15 years of marriage. The Spirit of Old West Point
FEBRUARY, 1907 (1858-1862) BY MORRIS SCHAFF I ON THE THRESHOLD SOME time during the winter of 185758, I received from the Hon. Samuel S. Cox, Member of Congress from Ohio, and representing the district composed of Licking, Franklin, and Pickaway, an appointment as cadet at West Point. I know it was winter time, for, across the vanished years, I can see the family gathered before the big wood fire, and my father entering, clad in his greatcoat — he had been to Newark and on his way home had stopped at the post office in Kirkersville—and bearing in his hand a large and significant-looking official letter. Removing his coat and adjusting his glasses, he opened the communication from Washington and read my appointment. Oh, the quiet radiance of my mother’s face! And never, I think, did fire burn so cheerily as ours burned that night, — and somehow, I am fain to believe, the curling smoke communicated the news to the old farm; for every field that I had wandered over from … [Read more...] about The Spirit of Old West Point
