Most early reviewers of the memoir by Justice Clarence Thomas focused on his anger against sexual harassment accuser Anita Hill to the exclusion of more interesting material, a new book review says.Thomas doesn’t reach the subject of Anita Hill until 80 percent of the way into the book, says Professor David Garrow of Homerton College in a review for Legal Times. And his account seems “terse and restrained,” he writes.“Yet My Grandfather’s Son is plenty newsworthy, even if initial reviews and commentaries have ‘missed the lede,’ as journalists say when stories fail to highlight what’s most important,” Garrow writes. “In fact, those accounts have missed multiple ledes.”The most dramatic missed lede, he writes, are accounts of Justice Thomas’ early drinking problem. It continued until the early 1980s, when he spent many nights drinking alone in a small apartment. Yet it is not the only part of the book in which Thomas … [Read more...] about Reviewers ‘Missed the Lede’ in Justice Thomas’ Book, Prof Says

The News Media Was Very Wrong to Make Jeffrey Sandusky’s Arrest a Huge Story
Yesterday, much of the country learned the name of Jeffery Sandusky. This happened because he was charged with multiple counts of serious crimes which the media routinely described as “sexual assault of children.” Of course, this kind of horrible thing happens many times a day, so why did this situation get wide-spread national news coverage and trend on Twitter for most of the day?Well, you see Jeffery is the adopted son of Jerry Sandusky, the most notorious convicted child molester in the world and the reason that Penn State University is now more well-known for “scandal” than for anything else. As someone who has investigated the entire Jerry Sandusky story more completely than anyone on the planet, I found this development to be beyond mystifying on multiple levels.Don’t get me wrong. I am hardly naïve when it comes to the ways of the ratings/click-driven news media. The Sandusky name is known/hated by almost everyone and therefore any negative … [Read more...] about The News Media Was Very Wrong to Make Jeffrey Sandusky’s Arrest a Huge Story
The Charlottesville Rally Was Apparently Planned At Trump International Hotel
In another embarrassing episode of the New York Times buries the lede, white nationalist Richard Spencer and others apparently planned their part of the Charlottesville “Unite the Right” rallies while staying at Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C.In the final three paragraphs of a 42+ paragraph-long article, the Times’ puff piece on President Trump‘s latest throwback to the Gilded Era claims that Spencer and other white nationalists are frequent guests at the site of the Old Post Office Pavilion–just five blocks away from the White House.Reporter Katie Rogers notes that Spencer, who is famous for being habitually punched in the face as he advocates the elimination of people who aren’t white, has been seen at the marble-and-crystal-slathered hotel with other white nationalists like Evan McLaren–an underling at Spencer’s white nationalist agitprop outfit, the National Policy Institute.McLaren summed up the apparent mood of … [Read more...] about The Charlottesville Rally Was Apparently Planned At Trump International Hotel
9th Circuit rules grandparents exempt from Trump’s travel ban, allows more refugees
In a ruling issued just 11 days after oral arguments, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld a district court’s limits on restrictions on travel to the U.S. created by President Donald Trump’s travel ban.The ruling (PDF) in Hawaii v. Trump is not on the legality of the president’s revised executive order; those arguments will be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court on Oct. 10. Rather, the dispute is over the federal government’s implementation of a June 26 Supreme Court ruling saying the president’s executive order should not be enforced against foreign nationals with “a credible claim of a bona fide relationship with a person or entity in the United States.” The state of Hawaii and the Trump administration are litigating the meaning of that statement as to refugee admissions as well as admissions of nationals from the six majority-Muslim nations named in Trump’s order.“The court’s order clarifies that the government is … [Read more...] about 9th Circuit rules grandparents exempt from Trump’s travel ban, allows more refugees

Mark Poniatowski, a business lawyer, recently beefed up his LinkedIn profile, and that led to the California attorney getting referrals worth $12,000, Forbes reports.Kern Lewis, a marketing specialist and Forbes contributor, writes in the publication’s Entrepreneurs column that the referrals came a few weeks after Poniatowski improved his LinkedIn page. The founding partner of Poniatowski Leding Parikh, the Castro Valley attorney spent an hour fixing his LinkedIn profile, according to the column, and three hours connecting with people he knew professionally. He set aside 30 minutes, once a week, to build his online network and engage through “pings and content sharing.”Poniatowski told Lewis that the site helped him keep track of position changes, research business decision-makers and set up introductions within his network.“LinkedIn does nothing for you but set up the channel of communication,” Lewis wrote. “ You have to reach through that channel to … [Read more...] about A few hours on LinkedIn brought me $12,000 worth of referrals in weeks, lawyer tells columnist
