Carried out by researchers at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health and Vanderbilt University Medical Centre, the new study looked at 3,070 healthy participants aged 18 to 30 who had their food and beverage intakes measured three times over a 20-year period to assess their intake of sugar-sweetened beverages (such as soft drinks, fruit drinks, energy drinks) and sugar added to foods (for example when cooking or in processed foods). After a 25-year follow-up, the participants also underwent CT scans to measure fat volumes in their abdomen and around the heart. The findings, published … [Read more...] about Eating too much sugar could lead to more fat being stored around the organs

Overweight children “more prone to Alzheimer’s decades later”: Study
Children who are obese are more prone to dementia decades later, according to new research. Obesity increases the risk of cognitive decline in middle age - which can lead to full-blown dementia. The finding is based on more than 1,200 people tracked for over 30 years , starting when they were in school. "Developing strategies that improve low fitness and decrease obesity levels in childhood are important because it could contribute to improvements in cognitive performance in midlife," said lead author Professor Michele Callisaya, of Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. "Importantly the study also indicates protective strategies against future cognitive decline may need to start as far back as early childhood, so the brain can develop sufficient reserve against developing conditions such as dementia in older life." Dementia cases worldwide will triple to over 150 million by 2050. With no cure in sight, there is an increasing focus on lifestyle factors that reduce the … [Read more...] about Overweight children “more prone to Alzheimer’s decades later”: Study
Johnson must act quickly to shore up the creaking NHS – and tackle waiting lists first
Boris Johnson has won his coveted majority and, though Brexit was his mantra through the campaign, this parliament has a lot more to deliver than that. The NHS was by some distance the most important election issue after our future relationship with the European Union. Politicians across the spectrum clearly thought it would swing more “undecided” voters than anything else, with representatives of all parties tucking their ties into their shirts to wander round hospitals and promise a better future. For the Conservatives, their promise of 40 new hospitals came under great scrutiny, and professionals and patients alike now expect to see the bricks and mortar to match the press releases and warm words. My colleagues and I, as surgeons, see at first hand what a chronic shortage of capacity in the NHS is doing to the service. When the NHS was first established in 1948, it took on a waiting list of 476,000 patients. No monitoring took place until 1951, when the number had … [Read more...] about Johnson must act quickly to shore up the creaking NHS – and tackle waiting lists first
Eating too much sugar could increase the risk of Alzheimer’s
(Agence France-Presse) Paris ● Mon, June 22, 2020 2020-06-22 10:02 734 6657ac82168da9fa101c8a4066097084 2 Health sugar, health, diabetes,Alzheimers Free A study led by French researchers from Inserm (the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research) and the University of Montpellier points to a link between excessive consumption of sugary foods and an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s in people with a genetic predisposition to the disease. For the study, nearly 2800 French people over the age of 65 were followed over a 12-year period, in order to identify factors likely to increase their risk of dementia. While genetic predisposition plays an important role in the onset of Alzheimer’s, environmental factors such as diet may also have an impact. The authors of the study published in Alzheimer’s and Dementia set out to explore how daily sugar consumption could affect the development of the disease. Previous studies in animals have … [Read more...] about Eating too much sugar could increase the risk of Alzheimer’s
