A man led police on a chase that spanned the late hours of August 6 into the early hours of August 7 in Alabama after he allegedly stole and crashed three vehicles, two of which were an ambulance and a volunteer fire truck. The Limestone County Sheriff's Office said in a statement published on Facebook that Tyrek Dequavyious Hayes, 30, faces multiple charges, including three counts of theft, attempting to elude law enforcement and kidnapping. An EMT was in the ambulance when Hayes reportedly hijacked it. Florida shark attack leads to leg amputation for 10-year-old boy

August 16, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A 10-year-old boy has had his leg amputated after an eight-foot bull shark attacked him in the Florida Keys. Jameson Reeder Jr. was snorkeling in Looe Key with his family when the shark attacked, the Miami Herald reported. As the bull shark bit above Reeder's knee, he "screamed and cried for help while miraculously staying afloat" on a pool noodle, the boy's uncle, Joshua Reeder, said on a Facebook post. "Jameson jr. was saying "Jesus will save me, Jesus will save me," his uncle said. The boy's father and mother called for a rescue boat, which had a nurse on board. "They rushed him and his Mom Mary to shore as paramedics were called and standing by to help along with a helicopter being ready to airlift him to the hospital," the uncle wrote. When the boy arrived at the hospital, doctors "swung into action" right away. "They had to remove/amputate from just below the knee to save his life as it was not operable from the damage the shark had caused. They said the shark … [Read more...] about Florida shark attack leads to leg amputation for 10-year-old boy

Biden’s cancer research reduction act | Opinion

August 15, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Tom Whitehead continually marvels at the life-saving power of CAR T-cell gene therapy, which rescued his daughter Emily from pediatric leukemia. "To look at her every day and see what a cure for cancer actually looks like––it's pretty amazing," he says. CAR T-cell therapy is a revolutionary treatment, years in the making. It's no surprise it was developed in the United States; more biomedical innovation occurs here than anywhere else in the world. But that's likely to change because of the newly passed Inflation Reduction Act. It's a simple case of incentives. Innovative medicines take about $2.6 billion over 10 to 15 years to complete. Pharmaceutical companies can only afford the trial and error of research and development (R&D) because the successes offset the price of the failures. But by empowering government bureaucrats to set artificial price caps on drugs, the Inflation Reduction Act will remove the incentive to produce innovative therapeutics for patients in … [Read more...] about Biden’s cancer research reduction act | Opinion

Gas station system error sells gas for only 46 cents per gallon

August 15, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

While gas prices across the U.S. continue to plunge, a glitch at one station in the Pacific Northwest led to prices not seen since the early 1970s. A glitch in the system at an Arco station in Yakima, Washington, moved prices to rock-bottom levels on Saturday night, with one photo published by KIMA-TV showing a pump with a cost of $0.46 a gallon. Word about the error spread throughout the Yakima area online, KIMA reported, causing the station to be swarmed with customers. While most were excited to take advantage of the situation, others were not so enthused, lamenting how people "came together to rip off a business." The owners of the Arco station were not able to estimate how long the glitch was active. By Sunday morning, the station confirmed to KIMA that the issue had been resolved. This is not the first time in the last year that a gas station operated by Arco suffered from a price glitch. In November, KTLA reported that a station in Los Angeles sold gas for $0.45 a … [Read more...] about Gas station system error sells gas for only 46 cents per gallon

Nuclear war scenarios would see billions dead from famine globally

August 15, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

The detonation of nuclear weapons may lead to worldwide famines , scientists have said. In a paper published in the journal Nature Food , scientists considered how the soot ejected into the atmosphere as a result of nuclear bombs exploding may lead to mass food shortages. They estimate that if the amount of soot entering the atmosphere exceeds 5 Tg (around 11 billion pounds), the sun would be blocked out so much that crop growth would be severely impacted in nearly every country. According to the paper, a nuclear war between India and Pakistan could send between 5 and 47Tg of soot into the stratosphere. Even more devastating, a U.S.-Russian nuclear war may produce up to 150Tg of soot, causing a nuclear winter. "The reduced light, global cooling and likely trade restrictions after nuclear wars would be a global catastrophe for food security," the authors wrote in the paper. "More than 2 billion people could die from a nuclear war between India and Pakistan, and more … [Read more...] about Nuclear war scenarios would see billions dead from famine globally

Boeing 737-sized asteroid to pass as close to Earth as the Moon

August 15, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A 100-foot asteroid is due to fly by Earth, nearly as close to the planet as the Moon . On August 16, the asteroid 2022 PW will pass at a distance of 1.4 LD (Lunar Distance). One LD is how far away the Moon is from the Earth. According to NASA 's Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS), 2022 PW is traveling at a speed of around 7.5 km/s (about 17,000 mph) and is between 75 and 100 feet across, making it roughly the size of a Boeing 737-500, or a blue whale . NASA defines Near Earth Objects as "asteroids or comets whose orbit intersects Earth's orbit and which may therefore pose a collision danger. Due to their size and proximity, NEOs are also more easily accessible for spacecraft from Earth." The majority of asteroids orbit our sun in the Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter, varying in size from a few feet across to Vesta and Ceres, measuring around 350 miles and 600 miles in diameter, respectively. Occasionally, one will be nudged closer towards our sun by … [Read more...] about Boeing 737-sized asteroid to pass as close to Earth as the Moon
