Lead screw run out

“Women of color lead and it’s a problem”: How Colorado’s last bill of 2022 died

May 17, 2022 by www.denverpost.com

The very last bill to be voted on in Colorado’s 2022 legislative session was designed to make sure the state never lets another child experience what Lorenzo Montoyawent through. Montoya was 14 years old in 2000 when he was taken into questioning by Denver police detectives who suspected him in the killing of a Skinner Middle School teacher named Emily Johnson. He didn’t kill her . Again and again, that’s what he told detectives. But over a period of hours, first with Montoya’s mom present and later alone with the child, the police planted a narrative in the child’s mind. They claimed they’d already retrieved fingerprints, shoe prints and hair samples to back it up. Confused and under enormous pressure, Montoya relented and gave a coerced confession. He was convicted of murder and spent the rest of his childhood and most of his 20s incarcerated, before being exonerated in 2014. It is legal in Colorado and all states but Oregon, Illinois and Utah for police to lie to … [Read more...] about “Women of color lead and it’s a problem”: How Colorado’s last bill of 2022 died

Promoters of the Big Lie want to run our elections. We must stop them | Opinion

May 17, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

While there are many issues front and center for voters as they head to the polls for the primaries over the next few months, it is time for all of us to understand just what's at stake for our democracy. In Colorado, the county clerk running for Secretary of State was recently barred by a judge from overseeing the 2022 elections and is under indictment on criminal election-tampering charges . In Georgia, a candidate for governor continues to make the absurd claim that the last election was "rigged and stolen." In Michigan, a conspiracy-pushing lawyer has already earned the state Republican Party's endorsement for attorney general. All three are election deniers. They're running for top state offices that will oversee future elections by campaigning on lies and conspiracies about the 2020 election. These aren't fringe candidates, and they are far from outliers this cycle. Election deniers are running up and down the ballot this year from coast to coast, according to a … [Read more...] about Promoters of the Big Lie want to run our elections. “Dunkin’ runs on call-outs”: Worker stressed by understaffing sparks outcry

May 17, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A video from an understaffed Dunkin' Donuts has gone viral, prompting an outcry over the working conditions that have driven food service workers to leave their jobs in droves. Dunkin' employee Kaliah Hodnett recorded her distraught coworker in a TikTok video shared last week. The post has amassed 1.7 million views in five days. "When you get 3 call-outs and 2 people quit all in the same day," Hodnett captioned her video. The footage showed her coworker, whose face was manipulated by a crying filter, standing in the office of a Dunkin' restaurant. Hodnett added hashtags that said "I hate my job" and "Dunkin' runs on call-outs." The record number of Americans quitting their jobs since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic has been termed " The Great Resignation ." Quitting rates have continued to soar this year, with over 4.5 million people leaving their jobs in March. Workers in hospitality and food services quit at a rate of 6.1 percent that month, double the national average … [Read more...] about “Dunkin’ runs on call-outs”: Worker stressed by understaffing sparks outcry

August 21, 2019 by www.thehindu.com

A war that is shrinking India’s geopolitical options

May 17, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

What was initially assumed in New Delhi to be a quick confrontation between Russia and Ukraine, the war in Europe is now raging on with no end in sight, and with its long-term implications yet unknown. As for India, the initial phase of diplomatic rush is over and its geopolitical options are shrinking as the war drags on. Diminishing options For several weeks during late March and April, it seemed as though the Ukraine war presented a number of geopolitical options for New Delhi to choose from. The high-profile visits to New Delhi, the entreaties of these leaders for Indian support for their positions in the ongoing war, and India’s balancing act all seemed to propel the country to the centre stage of global attention. And yet, instead of enhancing New Delhi’s ability to make strategic choices in its broader region, the Ukraine war may actually limit the number of options available to New Delhi for at least three reasons: one, Russia as a key strategic partner is no longer … [Read more...] about A war that is shrinking India’s geopolitical options

Conscience and the body politic

July 10, 2015 by www.thehindu.com

Bureaucrats have social status and power. They also possess personal knowledge of the rules. So, as a reasonably educated Indian citizen knows, it is pointless to argue with a bureaucrat: one can only plead with him or her. The case of politicians is different. They seem to be one of “us”, as they derive their power from their popularity among ordinary men and women. Also, we learn at school that democratic politics is all about discussion and debate. So, when we grow up and attain adult citizenship, we live in the hope that our views will be heard by those who represent us. This hope — and the belief that keeps it alive — received a body blow during the >21 months of Emergency rule >, in effect from June 25, 1975 until its withdrawal on March 21, 1977. Ordinary citizens realised with shock that they had no rights whatsoever under the new system. When Indira Gandhi became supreme leader, the politicians surrounding her became small dictators. The new style of exercising … [Read more...] about Conscience and the body politic

Employee’s plan to make boss eat his words about overtime delights Internet

May 17, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A man is being backed for refusing to take a longer lunch break to cut down on overtime after he was reprimanded for doing that very thing. The now-viral Reddit post, titled, "No more long lunches," was shared to the subreddit "Malicious Compliance" on May 16 by Redditor @mattchica20 , who is a 26-year-old third shift team lead at a retail store. The post has garnered 14,000 upvotes and over 600 comments since it was shared. According to a QuickBooks Time survey of 15,000 employees in 27 different countries, the average break for lunch around the world lasted for 35 minutes. In addition, four out of six countries that have the longest lunch breaks on average are in Asia. In the United States, 59 percent of respondents get a 30-minute lunch break, whereas 25 percent are given a one-hour break. In addition, 12 percent receive 15 minutes for their breaks, 3 percent have no lunch break, and 2 percent have more than an hour break. 'Malicious Compliance' Around a month ago, the … [Read more...] about Employee’s plan to make boss eat his words about overtime delights Internet

Pennsylvania governor’s race could have outsize impact on abortion access

May 17, 2022 by www.latimes.com

One day after the draft Supreme Court decision that would overturn Roe vs. Wade leaked, Pennsylvania Democrat Josh Shapiro declared that his bid to become governor was the only thing preventing Republicans from restricting abortion access in the state. “The next governor is going to have a bill on their desk that will restrict or outlaw abortion rights, and they will have a decision as to whether to sign it or veto it,” he told reporters this month. “I will, of course, veto it. My opponents would sign it.” If the landmark 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision guaranteeing protection of abortion rights is overturned, abortion policy will be set by states, where Republicans hold the majority of legislatures and governorships. But in a handful of states, particularly Pennsylvania and Kansas, the winner of the November gubernatorial races could have a significant impact, vetoing or signing into law abortion legislation that would affect millions of people of reproductive age both in their … [Read more...] about Pennsylvania governor’s race could have outsize impact on abortion access

*** Election Night Livewire *** Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Kentucky, Idaho, Oregon Vote in Contentious Primaries

May 17, 2022 by www.breitbart.com

Voters in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Kentucky, Idaho, and Oregon all head to the polls Tuesday to select their nominees in both GOP and Democrat primaries in what is thus far this year perhaps the biggest election night yet. Center-stage is Pennsylvania’s GOP U.S. Senate primary, where celebrity Dr. Mehmet Oz – with former President Donald Trump’s endorsement – aims to secure the nomination and advance to the general election. Both Oz and businessman David McCormick, who despite his Wall Street history has run one of the most America First campaigns this cycle, have spent north of eight figures bashing each other to smithereens in a brutal ad campaign. Kathy Barnette, the author and conservative commentator whose powerful personal story has captivated voters, has surged into the top tier in the final weeks of the campaign, giving both of the big spenders a run for their money. Who wins between Oz, McCormick, and Barnette, will have major implications for the future of the GOP, … [Read more...] about *** Election Night Livewire *** Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Kentucky, Idaho, Oregon Vote in Contentious Primaries
