Prime Minister Narendra Modi is attending two summits this week – he is a ‘special invitee’ at the 48th G7 Summit at Schloss Elmou in Germany. After that, he has a bilateral summit in Abu Dhabi with the UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan on June 28. Though the pundits may consider the second event as a sideshow, some statistics are enough to prove them wrong. If the U.S. is exempted, no G7 country comes close to the UAE as India’s trading partner, exports market, Indian diaspora base and their inward remittances. According to our official Foreign Direct Investment data, the UAE invested more in India in 2021 than Germany and France combined. Unlike the UAE, none of the G7 countries has yet signed a bilateral Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with India. Both summits are important to India, but unlike the interlocutors in the Bavarian Alps, our Prime Minister is unlikely to be hectored in Abu Dhabi about where not to buy oil from or how much Indian … [Read more...] about Modi’s two summits: UAE trumps G7

Nasa Mars mission: UK scientists to choose pieces of red planet’s surface to bring back to Earth
Scientists are to select the pieces of Mars that will one day be brought back to Earth. Researchers hope that studying the samples of rock and soil from its surface could help them look for life on the red planet. Nasa 's Mars misssion is scheduled to launch on Thursday, carrying a rover that will explore the surface. It is just one of three crafts to set off in the "Summer of Mars", as missions from the US, China and the UAE all take advantage of the helpful alignment of the planets to set out to study our neighbour. Scientists at Imperial College London and the Natural History Museum will help the Nasa Perseverance rover select the Martian samples to be brought back to Earth, as part of its mission to find ancient microbial life Jezero crater, the 28-mile (45km) wide destination of Perseverance, contains sediments of an ancient river delta, a location where evidence of past life could be preserved if it ever existed on the planet. Nasa launches mission to Mars in search of alien life
Nasa has launched its mission to Mars in search of evidence of past life on its surface. The Perseverance rover lifted off from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on Thursday at 07.50 local time [11.50 GMT] aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket. Just moments before the launch, California was hit by an earthquake that could be felt by mission controllers at Nasa’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, based in Pasadena. Although that left engineers surprised – and prompted remarks about how, alongside the coronavirus outbreak, events seem to have made the rover’s name especially apposite – the rocket blasted off on time. After some anxious minutes during which the rocket fired the spacecraft into space, and then onto a trajectory for Mars, as mission controllers waited for the spacecraft to power up with solar energy so that it could phone home, signals sent back from the spacecraft confirmed that it had safely launched and was on track for the Red … [Read more...] about Nasa launches mission to Mars in search of alien life
Teachers warn of autumn strikes if Tories refuse ‘inflation plus’ pay rise
The UK's largest teaching union has warned of strikes in the autumn until the Government commits to "inflation plus" pay hikes. The National Education Union said it would consult its 450,000-strong membership over potential industrial action if ministers fail to act on pay, staffing and workload issues. In a letter to the Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi , NEU chiefs Dr Mary Bousted and Kevin Courtney said: "We can no longer stand by while you run both education and educators into the ground." The Government has proposed a 3% wage increase for most teachers in England to the pay review body, which has not yet reported back on its decisions. But the NEU said this would amount to a "huge" pay cut as inflation hit 9.1% on the consumer price index measure today. It comes amid warnings over a summer of discontent as the Government goes to war with unions over their demands for inflation-busting pay rises. The Strange Tale of Tina Peters
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Just six weeks before the 2020 presidential election — game day for vote-counting bureaucrats — Tina Peters was so proud of her operation at the Mesa County clerk’s office that she invited a film crew in to show it off. There’s no chance of mishap here, she boasted. “The Russians can’t hack into and start casting votes for someone,” she said, as a few in the office chuckled. By May 2021, it was Ms. Peters, not the Russians, who had helped engineer an audacious breach of voting machines, according to an indictment charging her with seven felonies. Ms. Peters arranged to copy sensitive election software from county voting machines in an attempt to prove the 2020 presidential election was rigged, according to court records. Prosecutors said she committed identity theft and criminal impersonation, and violated the duties of her office in the process. Ms. Peters has pleaded not guilty. The strange tale of Tina Peters — a once-ordinary public servant … [Read more...] about The Strange Tale of Tina Peters
