The event, held at the Indian Society of International Law in New Delhi, saw in attendance inter alia senior counsel Indira Jaising, former ASG Biswajit Bhattacharya, celebrated advocates KK Manan, Vrinda Grover and Indira Unninayar, former ADJ Sangeeta Madan, journalist Maneesh Chibber, and former National Judicial Academy director G Mohan Gopal. The resolution was passed on 18th March, while considering the petition by BJP leader Ashwani Kumar Upadhyaya. The Council accepted the Sub-Committee report to the extent that the legislators cannot be stopped from practicing law. However, the committee had also suggested framing of rules barring MPs from appearing before the Judge/Court against whom motion of removal under the Judges(inquiry) Act, 1968 has been admitted either by the Speaker of the Lok Sabha or by the Chairman of Rajya Sabha. Democrats took to Twitter on Saturday to slam a letter by President Donald Trump's attorneys to special counsel Robert Mueller that he could not obstruct justice in the Russia probe, with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer saying the argument would only be valid in a dictatorship. "This would be a valid legal argument — if our government were a dictatorship," the New York Democrat said in his post. "Fortunately, we are a government of laws, not men. "And in America, no one is above the law, including the president." The New York Times reported Saturday that it had "obtained" a "confidential" 20-page letter written by Trump's attorneys in January and "hand-delivered" it to Mueller's team arguing why the president could not obstruct justice in any Russia investigation. The bench comprising Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Justice D.Y, Chandrachud ordered, “We have carefully gone through the Review Petition and the connected papers, but we see no reason to interfere with the order impugned. The Review Petition is, accordingly, dismissed.” The same Apex Court bench had, in April this year, denied an investigation into the judge’s death, opining that the Petitions lacked merit and that the conduct of the petitioners and the intervenors is “lacking in bona fides and reveals a misuse of the judicial process”.
