Roger Stone is not cooperating. But soon, he might not have a choice. On Monday, Justice Department prosecutors asked a federal judge to compel Stone and his wife to turn over all of their financial statements and bank account information from 2017 to the present. The request is part of a tax evasion lawsuit brought against the Stones last year. But for the MAGA world’s preeminent cocktail-clutching coxcomb, it could carry ramifications well beyond the IRS. The judge’s order would force the Stones to disclose a potential treasure trove of evidence. Prosecutors would obtain records of any financial activity of Stone tied to the Jan. 6 riot and “Stop the Steal” efforts, as well as potential payments from pardon-seekers, politicians, and private boosters—and, possibly, information about accounts that the Stones haven’t yet disclosed. So far, however, the Stones have refused to comply. Federal prosecutors filed the multimillion-dollar lawsuit against the Stones last … [Read more...] about How a Tax Case Could Force Roger Stone to Cough Up Jan. 6 Records

How a mysterious Putin ally, the ‘Russian Gatsby,’ moves his billions
On the day Russia invaded Ukraine , Vladimir Putin summoned 37 of his country’s most powerful business leaders to the Kremlin. The Russian president told them the incursion had been “a necessary measure” and asked them “to be understanding of what is going on.” Russia’s stock exchange had just closed at a 33 percent loss, wiping out an estimated $71 billion in wealth, with a raft of new sanctions from the United States and the European Union already in effect and more on the way. For many oligarchs in the room, it would be their first taste of international financial restrictions. But for others, like Suleiman Kerimov, sanctions were nothing new. The enigmatic, Ferrari-driving billionaire and his family have gone to great lengths to shield their assets, documents suggest, an effort that would have helped to insulate him when he and other Russian elites were sanctioned by the U.S. in 2018 for benefitting from the country’s “malign activity around the globe.” … [Read more...] about How a mysterious Putin ally, the ‘Russian Gatsby,’ moves his billions
Ahmad Zahid denies committing CBT, says YAB funds transferred to legal firm as officer found negligent
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi denied committing criminal breach of trust involving RM17,953,185.21 of Yayasan Akalbudi (YAB) funds on Tuesday (May 24) and instead claimed that he transferred the money to a legal firm because his former executive secretary was prone to making mistakes in handling money. This amount of the funds involved the sixth of 12 charges of criminal breach of trust the former deputy prime minister is facing. Ahmad Zahid, 69, told the High Court that he appointed Lewis & Co to handle the funds of the foundation owned by him because Major Mazlina Mazlan @ Ramly had been careless in managing his personal money and YAB funds. "My Lord, as I said earlier in my statement, Mazlina had committed mistakes on many occasions, including writing a figure different from the amount spelled out in cheques and not sending monthly credit card statements and other documents when asked. "The transfer of the foundation’s funds to the legal firm was not for … [Read more...] about Ahmad Zahid denies committing CBT, says YAB funds transferred to legal firm as officer found negligent
You Can Get a Quarantine Haircut if You Know the Right Barber—and Have the Money
As the new socially distant reality drags on, hair has become a major topic of conversation on Zoom dates and phone calls. Videos of at-home buzz cuts are inescapable on social media. Celebrities from Ricky Martin to Elle Fanning have dyed their hair pink. Anderson Cooper revealed on air that he accidentally gave himself a bald spot. But not everyone’s feeling the DIY spirit. As cabin fever—and split ends—reach an apex, barbers have begun to offer house calls for those unwilling to pick up scissors themselves. Last month, The Washington Post described a growing “black market of hairstylists” ready to “risk it all” with such visits, but those who spoke to The Daily Beast are not trying to hide their services. Many have taken to advertise on Craigslist and Instagram, charging a bit more than usual for appointments. It helps them keep food on the table and rent paid as salons remain shuttered. “As a professional barber [before coronavirus], I took the risk of getting … [Read more...] about You Can Get a Quarantine Haircut if You Know the Right Barber—and Have the Money
Moscow launches a new phase of the conflict
This live blog is now closed. For the latest updates please check here . Russia has opened a long-anticipated new phase of the war in Ukraine , launching its eastern offensive in a bid to seize the country's industrial heartland. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed the move Tuesday , saying the Kremlin's goal was to achieve the “full liberation of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics,” which together make up the Donbas region. The full-scale assault on Ukraine's east came as the last fighters in Mariupol, the besieged port city that is crucial to Moscow's goals, continued to hold out despite a new Russian deadline to surrender. It also followed Russian strikes across the country, hitting supply lines and military infrastructure and killing at least seven people in the western city of Lviv . The United States is expected to announce another package of military aid, which is expected to be similar in size to the $800 million one the administration … [Read more...] about Moscow launches a new phase of the conflict

Xinjiang police files reveal horrors of China’s Uyghur internment camps
A cache of previously unseen police files from Xinjiang has brought to light further details about the Chinese government's systemic internment of Muslims, in what a leading researcher has described as "most likely the largest incarceration of an ethno-religious minority since the Holocaust." The file dump, which follows a hack into a Xinjiang police database, includes key speeches by senior officials responsible for running the region's "re-education" camps, which officials in Beijing have described as vocational training centers. The files also contain mugshots of more than 2,800 detainees, among them 15 minors. The Xinjiang police files , authenticated research coordinated by Dr. Adrian Zenz , were published on Tuesday as the United Nations ' top rights official, Michelle Bachelet, begins a highly watched six-day visit to China to assess its human rights condition. Brave cat leaps to baby’s defence after father ‘attacks’ child as it lies in its chair
A brave cat came to a baby's rescue after it believed the child was being slapped by its father. The furry black feline showed off its maternal instincts when after hearing the man tapping hard on the baby's car seat saying "Naughty baby" repeatedly. After jumping at the man's hand a couple of times, the cat is forced to take more drastic action when he refuses to stop 'hitting' at the baby. Launching itself at the man's arm, the cat continually throws its bodyweight at the 'attacker' until he finally stops tapping the baby's seat and leans back onto the sofa bed. Heroic: Cat defends helpless baby from father's 'attack' ( Image: VideoSamorodki / You Tube) And it looks like the cat may have even managed to sink his claws into the man's arm as he shouts in pain before rubbing his wounded skin. It appears the clip was set up to test the cat's reactions - and the man never actually harms the baby. The video, which was shared online by VideoSamorodki on March 29, … [Read more...] about Brave cat leaps to baby’s defence after father ‘attacks’ child as it lies in its chair
