China on Saturday called for India to reiterate its support for the ‘One-China’ policy in the backdrop of the crisis in the Taiwan Strait, a day after New Delhi suggested that there was no need for any “reiteration” on it. The comments by Chinese Ambassador Sun Weidong came amid escalating tension between China and Taiwan following US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the self-governing island last week. On the eastern Ladakh border standoff, the envoy said both sides should maintain dialogue and work for a mutually acceptable solution even as he noted that Beijing will work hard to bring the bilateral ties back to the “right track”. “My understanding is that India’s ‘One China’ policy has not changed…We hope that India can reiterate support for the ‘One China principle,” he told a group of journalists. At a media briefing on Friday, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi avoided mentioning the ‘One-China’ policy, noting that India’s position on “relevant” … [Read more...] about Hope India Reiterate Its Support for One-China Policy, Says Envoy Amid Taiwan Tensions

Editor Daily Rundown: Mask Confusion
MASK CONFUSION… NY TIMES… DAVID LEONHARDT: A Confusing Message — The C.D.C. recommends indoor masking for the vaccinated, but only in some places. As you can see, most of the Northeast and upper Midwest, as well as much of the West, have only “moderate” or “low” transmission. If that stays true, vaccinated residents in those places can generally remain unmasked, the C.D.C. says. […] Breakthrough infections among the vaccinated appear to be only a modest reason that the number of new cases has been rising, as I explained in Monday’s newsletter. When vaccinated people do get the virus, they are less likely to pass it on to others — and much less likely to get very sick. […] The country was polarized long before Covid. But the C.D.C. has not maximized its chances of being heard, either. That’s the communication problem I mentioned above. Its announcement of the new guidelines was both vague and technical, making it hard for many nonexperts to understand. The agency … [Read more...] about Editor Daily Rundown: Mask Confusion

Aanand L Rai On Raksha Bandhan Being Called ‘Regressive’: Needed to Raise the Issue in My Film | Exclusive
Raksha Bandhan released on the day of Raksha Bandhan. While this can be called a perfectly timed release, the fact that it clashed with Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan starrer Laal Singh Chaddha is something that trade analysts have been looking into. This clash at the box office could have been averted, and while the audience does have the choice to watch both films, the distribution of screens significantly impacts the numbers. In an exclusive interview with News18 Showsha, director Aanand L Rai, and actor Bhumi Pednekar has opened up about it. Talking about the clash, Aanand L Rai said, “This (the release of two films on the same day) remains a producer’s or studio’s problem, that’s not for the audience. I would like to say that there’s a film coming from Aamir sir, he is a great actor. And, it’s unfortunate that there’s a clash. But I’m really looking forward to both films doing good for the audience. It would be a delight if audience like both the films.” Actress … [Read more...] about Aanand L Rai On Raksha Bandhan Being Called ‘Regressive’: Needed to Raise the Issue in My Film | Exclusive
