Law practice pays ‘too much too quickly to the wrong people doing the wrong thing,’ UK lawyer says

· October 4, 2013 ·

Have attorneys and governments lost sight of why laws exist? Yes, says Stephen Mayson, a United Kingdom lawyer and consultant who also serves as director of the Legal Services Institute.“What we have in the legal practice is a reward system that pays out too much too quickly to the wrong people doing the wrong thing,” said Stephen Mayson, speaking in Chicago at the 2013 Futures Conference. The event is sponsored by the College of Law Practice Management and takes place at Chicago-Kent College of Law.In his keynote presentation, Mayson noted that law should protect the public interest. Instead, there’s been an artificial market for legal services in which lawyers are doing work that could be left to others.“If there’s any risk I might lose my life, liberty, children, home, health care, access to education—I’d be quite happy for those types of legal rights to only be pursued by those who are authorized to do so,” he says. His address also … [Read more...] about Law practice pays ‘too much too quickly to the wrong people doing the wrong thing,’ UK lawyer says

As Law Practice Paradigm Shifts, Proactive Lawyers Consider Career Changes

· June 24, 2009 ·

After joining the Atlanta office of Hunton & Williams in 1989, soon after it opened, L. Traywick Duffie was still practicing there 20 years later. But not any more. The labor and employment specialist, who until March was co-head of his former firm’s practice group, is now a partner at Littler Mendelson. He joined the firm on June 19.“For my particular practice and what I want to do as I continue my career, I thought Littler provided a more attractive platform,” he tells the Daily Report in an article reprinted by New York Lawyer (reg. req.).The move allows him to offer more cost-effective and value-added legal services, he explains, due in part to the national labor and employment boutique’s 47 offices. However, “it was a very hard decision. I considered it awhile,” Duffie says.He is one of many lawyers making significant career changes, as a dismal economy and a seeming seismic shift in the corporate law practice paradigm spur a growing number … [Read more...] about As Law Practice Paradigm Shifts, Proactive Lawyers Consider Career Changes

Law Firm Manager Gets 41 Months for Embezzling $1.3M

· November 18, 2009 ·

Sentenced yesterday by a federal judge in California to 41 months for embezzling $1.3 million from the law firm at which she formerly worked as office manager, Regina Schenck blames a “demeaning” climate at Diepenbrock Harrison and a “horse addiction” for fueling her crime. In a presentence letter to U.S. District Judge Lawrence Karlton, the 46-year-old Schenck describes a downward spiral in which she began stealing from the firm in order to buy better horses and equipment after being told that her oldest daughter could potentially be an Olympic-level rider, reports the Sacramento Bee.“My only comfort came from being around horses,” she writes. “They became my misguided attempt to buy the love of my family. I began to take money from the firm to finance the expense of keeping and showing our horses.”A trusted longtime employee, Schenck also reportedly gave herself a $30,000 annual raise and better benefits by altering records in the law … [Read more...] about Law Firm Manager Gets 41 Months for Embezzling $1.3M

Home Daily News Mass shooting survivors allege law firm manager… Legal Marketing By Debra Cassens Weiss Posted May 1, 2018, 3:10 pm CDT Survivors of the Pulse nightclub shooting who hired a Philadelphia-based law firm to represent them are criticizing recruiting tactics by the firm and its law office manager. Three survivors of the 2016 Orlando shooting told the New York Times that an office manager for the Law Offices of Conrad J. Benedetto appeared to seek their help in recruiting other victims to become clients. The three survivors said the law office manager, John Groff, invited them on cross country trips to meet with other mass shooting survivors. On the trips, they began to suspect that the law firm invited them in hopes they would help recruit more clients. One man represented by the law firm, Brian Nunez, had left the Pulse nightclub moments before the shooting. He said he was asked to record a promotional video for the firm. Nunez told the Times he agreed, though he … [Read more...] about Mass shooting survivors allege law firm manager wanted their help recruiting other victims
