Firms continually struggle to transition associates and junior partners from the “learning to be a great attorney mindset” to being great attorneys who also actively contribute to the firm’s bottom line.  In a fragile and shrinking legal market, business development at all levels and in all practice areas starts earlier and is being monitored more closely. Common stumbling blocks at the outset of building a business development mindset include where attorneys should start and how firms should help attorneys tailor their plans to both their different practices and diverse personalities. The median salary for first-year associates working at law firms is $115,000, the same figure as last year, according to a law firm survey by the National Association for Law Placement.NALP executive director James Leipold says in a press release that law firm salaries are showing little movement. “Following the recession, law firm associate salaries are in stasis,” he said.NALP receives more salary reports from large than small firms. The median ranged from a low of $73,000 in firms of two-to-25 lawyers to $160,000 in firms of more than 700 lawyers. The report also found that firms pay bonuses for clerkships in amounts typically ranging from $10,000 to $25,000, depending on the type of court. The notion of creating a new class of associates that receives more training, less pressure to bill and less pay has taken hold at Greenberg Traurig as an alternative to the “quasi Hunger Game” model (as a Forbes writer put it this week) in which elite associates spend a brutal eight years trying to make partner.
