House GOP Panel Picks Rep. Wenstrup for Ways and Means Committee
Rep. Brad Wenstrup, R-Ohio, is set to join the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, The Hill is reporting. Wenstrup was recommended for the panel by the House GOP Steering Committee. He will replace Rep. Pat Meehan, R-Pa., according to The Hill. Meehan resigned from the House in April after coming under fire for using taxpayer money for a payment to a former staff member after a sexual harassment accusation, CNN reported. Ways and Means Chairman Kevin Brady, R-Texas welcomed the selection of Wenstrup. "Dr. Wenstrup is an excellent choice to join our committee," Brady said. "A decorated war veteran, small business owner, and doctor, Brad brings proven dedication to our country and invaluable experience to the team. House Speaker Paul Ryan has released a video in which he reads vicious "mean tweets" about himself, including one in which he’s called the human version of "a pair of pleated khakis." The Wisconsin lawmaker joined the "mean tweets" phenomenon – a regular feature on Jimmy Kimmel’s late night show – to rediscover "our common humanity as a way to restore civil discourse and strengthen civil society," his office says. On the video, which is sweetened by a laugh track, Ryan is seen reading looking at his cellphone and reading from his Twitter feed. "Paul Ryan could be a live action Disney villain. #WidowsPeak," he reads, grimacing and then adding, "They used to call me Eddie Munster, so not too much of a stretch." Article 13 would make big online platforms like YouTube and Facebook responsible for scanning content for anything copyrighted and ensuring the holders are paid a fair fee, which critics warn could extend to parodies and memes being "caught in the crosshairs". The law has divided many, with musicians including Paul McCartney saying that the reforms are necessary to fairly compensate artists, while critics such as Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales have argued that the impact will fall most on ordinary users of the internet.
