Supreme Court Says Americans Have Right to Carry Guns in Public

June 23, 2022 by www.news18.com

The US Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that Americans have a fundamental right to carry firearms in public in a landmark decision that came just weeks after another deadly school shooting. The 6-3 ruling strikes down a New York law that required a person to prove they had legitimate self-defense needs to receive a gun permit and will prevent states from restricting people carrying guns. Despite a growing call for limits on firearms after two mass shootings in May stunned the country, the court sided with advocates who said the US Constitution guarantees the right to own and carry guns. The ruling is the first by the court in a major Second Amendment case in a decade and a victory for the powerful gun lobby, the National Rifle Association. “Today’s ruling is a watershed win for good men and women all across America and is the result of a decades-long fight the NRA has led,” NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre said in a statement. “The right to self-defense and to … [Read more...] about Supreme Court Says Americans Have Right to Carry Guns in Public

Olivia Rodrigo slammed the US Supreme Court ruling that overturned Roe vs Wade during her performance at Glastonbury 2022. Olivia minced no words when she took the Other stage at the music festival, telling a crowd of thousands, “I’m devastated and terrified. So many women and so many girls are going to die because of this. I wanted to dedicate this next song to the five members of the Supreme Court who have showed us that at the end of the day, they truly don’t give a sh*t about freedom. The song is for the justices: Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh. We hate you! We hate you.” She and guest star Lily Allen proceeded to sing the “F**k You” song. Tech Giants and Industry Leaders Respond to US Supreme Court’s Controversial Abortion Judgement

June 27, 2022 by www.news18.com

The US Supreme Court last week overturned the Roe v Wade precedent that for decades guaranteed a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion. A draft opinion leaked months ago had led to fears that the landmark judgment could be overturned and last Friday, the largely conservative US Supreme Court, by a 6-3 majority, overturned the 1973 judgment that made abortion a constitutional right. As trigger bans came into effect in most red states, tech giant Google discussed the ruling in a company-wide email and explained that employees in affected states can ask for transfer without providing a justification. “This is a profound change for the country that deeply effects so many of us, especially women. Googlers can also apply for relocation without justification, and those overseeing this process will be aware of the situation,” Google said in the email, as reported by CNBC. According to a report by Tech Crunch, a spokesperson for Microsoft stated that the corporation will do … [Read more...] about Tech Giants and Industry Leaders Respond to US Supreme Court’s Controversial Abortion Judgement

US Supreme Court Overturns Roe v. Wade Verdict, Ends Nearly 50 Yrs of Constitutional Right to Abortion

June 24, 2022 by www.news18.com

The US Supreme Court on Friday ended the right to abortion in a seismic ruling that shreds half a century of constitutional protections on one of the most divisive and bitterly fought issues in American political life. The conservative-dominated court overturned the landmark 1973 “Roe v Wade” decision that enshrined a woman’s right to an abortion, saying that individual states can now permit or restrict the procedure themselves. “The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled; and the authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives,” the court said. In the majority opinion, Justice Samuel Alito said “abortion presents a profound moral issue on which Americans hold sharply conflicting views. “The Constitution does not prohibit the citizens of each State from regulating or prohibiting abortion,” he said. Dissenting were the three liberals on the court. The ruling will likely set into motion a … [Read more...] about US Supreme Court Overturns Roe v. Restricting Abortion Just Makes it More Deadly, Says UN After US Supreme Court Ruling

June 24, 2022 by www.news18.com

Restricting abortion access does not stop people seeking the procedure “it only makes it more deadly,” a spokesman for U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Friday after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a 1973 decision legalizing abortion. “Sexual and reproductive health and rights are the foundation of a life of choice, empowerment and equality for the world’s women and girls,” spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters. “Restricting access to abortion does not prevent people from seeking abortion, it only makes it more deadly.” The U.N Population Fund (UNFPA), the U.N. sexual and reproductive health agency, said “a staggering 45% of all abortions around the world are unsafe, making this a leading cause of maternal death.” The U.S. court’s decision was “a major setback” and a “huge blow to women’s human rights and gender equality,” U.N. human rights chief Michelle Bachelet said in a statement. Nearly half of all pregnancies worldwide are unintended and more than 60% … [Read more...] about Restricting Abortion Just Makes it More Deadly, Says UN After US Supreme Court Ruling

US Supreme Court Divided Over Church-State Separation

June 23, 2022 by www.news18.com

The wall separating church and state is one of the foundational principles of the United States. Sonia Sotomayor, one of three liberal justices on the Supreme Court, is accusing her conservative majority colleagues of tearing it down. Sotomayor did not mince words in a dissent to a ruling by the nine-member court this week that the state of Maine cannot deny public funds to religious schools. “There is nothing neutral about Maine’s program,” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in an opinion joined by the other five conservative justices. “The State pays tuition for certain students at private schools — so long as the schools are not religious,” Roberts said. “That is discrimination against religion.” In a blistering dissent, Sotomayor, who was named to the court by Democratic president Barack Obama, wrote, “what a difference five years makes.” “In 2017, I feared that the Court was ‘leading us … to a place where separation of church and state is a constitutional slogan, not a … [Read more...] about US Supreme Court Divided Over Church-State Separation

What does the Roe v Wade Supreme Court ruling mean for British women?

June 25, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

On the way into work early this morning I checked the headlines and felt like I’d been punched in the stomach. Millions of women will today be feeling the same. The ricochet of the overturning of Roe v Wade can be felt globally. For, on the surface of things, while this “only” appears to affect America, in truth it affects us all. The gradual dominance of conservative ideals in the US in recent years mirrors, in many ways, what can be already seen in so-called “modern” Britain: we are living through a time which is more focused on the crackdown on civil liberties than on protecting human rights ; where we can see, clear as day, the “othering” of disenfranchised communities through odious legislation such as the Nationality and Borders Bill . We have plans from our own government to send vulnerable refugees over to Rwanda , a failure to ban trans conversion therap y , the deliberate stoking of “culture wars” and straw man arguments used to perpetuate a … [Read more...] about What does the Roe v Wade Supreme Court ruling mean for British women?

She Never Considered Abortion. Then the Supreme Court Forced Her Hand.

June 28, 2022 by www.thedailybeast.com

Andrea Barnes has always dreamed of being a mother of three. This long-held goal has helped the 30-year-old Michigan native through two complicated pregnancies , multiple miscarriages, and parenting her two young daughters. Barnes told The Daily Beast on Monday that it was that same maternal desire that has pushed her to make a painful choice after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade on Friday: get an abortion before she might lose her right to choose in Michigan. “I want to keep the baby, I want to believe that everything will be OK,” Barnes said through tears. “But I have to be smarter than that and more logical, because the chances of something going wrong in my case are high.” Barnes’ decision to get an abortion—she said she had scheduled one for this coming Wednesday—comes relatively early in her pregnancy. She estimated she was five or six weeks along, roughly the cut-off for abortion bans in extreme states like Texas even before Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health … [Read more...] about She Never Considered Abortion. Then the Supreme Court Forced Her Hand.

Like None Other: Profound Impact of Conservative US Supreme Court

July 3, 2022 by www.news18.com

Two years after President Donald Trump filled its ranks with conservatives, the US Supreme Court has engineered a sharp turn in US constitutional law that could have a profound effect on American life for decades. Key decisions that rescinded abortion rights, permit Americans to tote their guns freely in public, expand religion in schools, remove voting rights protections, and impede the government’s ability to set controls on greenhouse gases, have turned long-accepted rules of justice on their heads. With a 6-3 majority on the bench, the conservatives led by Chief Justice John Roberts represent a mighty swing of the judicial pendulum from decades of a modestly progressive course. Politically, the Roberts court is effectively payback by the Republican right, which has since the 1970s endeavored to claim control of the high court to reverse key decisions they view as excessive. But analysts say the just-closed annual court season has revealed a set of judges more hard-line than … [Read more...] about Like None Other: Profound Impact of Conservative US Supreme Court
